Summer Car Shows

My wife's 40th Anniversary 93 Corvette came standard with
17x9.5 wheels and 285/40/17 rear tires so I see no reason why you couldn't run
a 285/30/18 tire on a 18x9.5 wheel. ZR-1's came standard with 17x9.5
fronts and 17x11 rears with 275/40 315/35 tires. Both my ZR-1's ran OZ
Mito 18x10 18x12.5 wheels with Michelin 285 fronts and 345/35 rears.

If PS Engineering would have offered my Kidney Bean
knockoffs in 18,I would run 275/35 fronts and 345/35 rears on my Camino.
Even better would be 19's so I could run 355/25/19's on the rear. g

Something strange is going on here. Every time I try to
Reply to Matt's posts,my computer locks up. Only way I can answer
them is restart it and use the Forward function which requires typing
in the List address. Anyone have an idea what's causing this??

HA HA HA!!! I wouldn't want to look wimpy in front of my

Seriously though, that tire size calculator says you need a 10 rim for
285/30, but I went to the BFG site and they say a 9.5 rim is ok. So
that could work! Wallet permitting of course. Seems like any 18
inch tire will be pricey.

What rim width does a ZR-1 run up front Clint?

Thanks, but I actually searched on Google and found some pictures of that
Camino. It's not that I don't believe you. ;-) I don't think
my car is lower than that...probably about the same without gas in it.

When I ran the 315/30/18 tire on one of those online tire size calculators, it
came up shorter (less diameter) than the 275/35/18 I was going to run up
front. Are those calculators reliable?

So for a slight rake forward, I guess I'd have to run 285/30s with the 315s?

I think I need to see a 315 tire on a Chevelle in person. I've seen
pictures, but I haven't seen any that look as low and tucked under as I think
mine will be. Guess that means I need to hit some car shows this summer!

Speaking of which, I know the So Cal Chevelle Camino Club show is coming up in
July (are there any members on this list?), but do any of the So Cal folks here
know of any other shows? I missed the April Super Chevy show.

Thanks,

Thanks Clint. That is good to know. I
don't remember where I heard that about the Baers.

You bring up a good point. I guess I can always
add spacers if the backspacing is too much..that is, of course, if the
overall width is okay. That's why I'm leaning toward a 10 instead
of bigger for the rear. I want them nice and tucked under the fender
anyway.

Cheers,

You've gotta have a build sheet to prove it's an SS in 69, unless it shows

2005-06-22 Thread Krister Meister

Pete,

A true US built SS is in the VIN from '64 - '68 and yes there are measures
even here to make sure things have not been tampered with on any year.
After '68 the SS was on option and can only be proven with an original
build sheet, original invoice or protector plate (exception in '72 the VIN
had engine size and 454 was available only on for an SS). Canada has
documentation for cars built there, but yours was built in Baltimore, MD.
Unfortunately without the documentation, there is no way to prove a true SS
on a '69 as someone could have gone through and installed all the SS
options and features and you could never tell the difference. If you ever
have the interior apart you may find a build sheet tucked into a seat or
else where.

RE: [Chevelle-list] Survey on Wheels

I was pretty surprised
about the 6" that Chuck is running after seeing my car, but I can only report
what he told me. As for the rear, I can only estimate from the space I
have with my 9.5" wheels. I see a bit of room left, so I am sure a 10"
wheel would be no problem, and perhaps an 11" with the right tires. A 305
is only an inch or so bigger than my 275, and I think there is enough room for
that.

  Brad,the 6" backspace figure I quoted was
  for 68-72's. That's interesting that you can run a front 17x9.5 w/6"
backspacing on a 67 with stock control arms, something I wasn't sure could be
done.Nice to know a66-67 can handle the same size front rolling
  stock as a 68-72.
However,I've never seen or heard of a
  66-67 running a 10" rear rim,much less an 11" wide hoop. The 66-67 rear
fenderwells are definitely tighter than the 68-72's.

The max in front is
close to 275. I have 17x9.5 wheels with 5 7/8" backspace and 275/40/17
wheels all around. You could probably be OK with 5 3/4" backspace and
the same setup. Note that I have the Global West Tubular Upper A-Arms
and 11" F-body spindle and brakes. Stock setups will be
different. Chuck Hanson told me he used 17x9.5" wheels with a 6"
backspace on his stock suspended '67.

In the rear, I would
be wary of 6" backspace, as not all cars are evenly put on the frame.
My driver side had some minor rub that I fixed with the BFH on the wheel
well (trunk) to make room. If you want max in the rear on a '66/'67,
then you could try a 17x11" wheel with the proper sized tire. There is
definitely a bit more room in the rear to the outside for my
setup.

  Matthew Post I think I
need to see a 315 tire on a Chevelle in person. I've seen pictures, but
I haven't seen any that look as low and tucked under as I think mine will
be. Guess that means I need to hit some car shows this
summer!Speaking of which, I know the So Cal Chevelle Camino Club show
is coming up in July (are there any members on this list?), but do any of the
So Cal folks here know of any other shows? I missed the April Super

Thanks Clint. That is good to
know. I don't remember where I heard that about the Baers.

You bring up a good point. I guess
I can always add spacers if the backspacing is too much..that is, of
course, if the overall width is okay. That's why I'm leaning toward a
10" instead of bigger for the rear. I want them nice and tucked under
  the fender anyway.
  Cheers,

  I was pretty surprised
about the 6" that Chuck is running after seeing my car, but I can only report
what he told me. As for the rear, I can only estimate from the space I
have with my 9.5" wheels. I see a bit of room left, so I am sure a 10"
wheel would be no problem, and perhaps an 11" with the right tires. A
305 is only an inch or so bigger than my 275, and I think there is enough room
  for that.

Brad,the 6" backspace figure I quoted
was for 68-72's.

I have 17x9.5 wheels with 5 7/8" backspace and
275/40/17 wheels all around. You could probably be OK with 5 3/4"
backspace and the same setup. Note that I have the Global West
Tubular Upper A-Arms and 11" F-body spindle and brakes. Stock setups
will be different. Chuck Hanson told me he used 17x9.5" wheels with
a 6" backspace on his stock suspended '67.

  In the rear, I
would be wary of 6" backspace, as not all cars are evenly put on the
frame. My driver side had some minor rub that I fixed with the BFH
on the wheel well (trunk) to make room. If you want max in the rear
on a '66/'67, then you could try a 17x11" wheel with the proper sized
tire. There is definitely a bit more room in the rear to the outside
  for my setup.

Try your Chevy dealer first. My 72
parts book shows the same nut for 64-71 all Chevrolet series. Have them check
group 6.515 and part number 124934 NUT, hub (1/2 20). Ive
even found door striker bolts at my local dealer for a dollar and change where
aftermarket suppliers want $3 to $5 each.
