[Chevelle-list] Tall deck big block

2005-08-12 Thread Herb Lumpp
Does anyone know if a standard 454 crank/rod/piston combo will fit in a tall
deck block? I don't know for sure, but I assume because the deck height is
10.2 vs the standard 9.8, the pistons and/or rods will need to be
different. TIA

Usually with more splines it has a larger shaft hence more strength!

Higher spline
count= greater strength. With finer (higher count0
splines you have more contact area. Probably more to it than that,
but thats all that ITHINK I know about the subject.

[Chevelle-list] Trim but no roof??

2005-08-12 Thread Bill Lessenberry
I was at a show tonight and there was a 68 Malibu there, Grotto Blue with
the trim for a vinyl roof, but no vinyl. The fellow who owns it said that
was the way the car came from the factory. I tried to get a look at the
trim tag, but it was too dark to see I didn't have my glasses on, so I
probably couldn't have seen it anyway. I know that I'll see the car again,
can I tell whether it had a vinyl roof originally by the trim tag? Have
any of you ever seen a Chevelle with the trim but no roof??

Confused again,

BillL

RE: [Chevelle-list] Trim but no roof??

2005-08-12 Thread Dale
Any vinyl topped Chevelle will have a number next to the paint code...like 1
for white or 2 for black (only two available in 68). Two-toned cars also
used the same trim. If upper or lower were originally Grotto Blue, tag
would read DC (Grotto Blue/White), DE (Grotto Blue/Fathom Blue), or ED
(Fathom Blue/Grotto Blue) - lower color being first. A solid color car
would not have the trim installed.

On tall deck truck engines, the piston has a fourth ring. Also, most of them
have gear driven timing sets from the factory. That's all I know for sure.

Also, it takes a specific intake or else you have to add shims to a short
deck intake in order for the head ports to match the intake.

[Chevelle-list] RE:Power Window Kit

2005-08-12 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Those are for a street rod or other classic that has flat glas and only
goes straight up and down. I don't know if the 64/65's have that situation,
but I'm pretty sure none of the rest of the Chevelles do, so in most cases
these won't work in a Chevelle.

I have a 69 Chevelle and I know there's a lot of controversy on if any of
them (other than maybe repro factory type) will work properly for the 69.
If anyone has any input on aftermarket power windows for a 69 I'm all ears.

Best aftermarket I found are universal from http://www.autoloc.com . Had a
complete set in my 67 and the worked like a charm and were very simple to
install. http://www.dalesplace.com/images/chevelle/elec_windows.jpg Part of
the unit slips over the manual regulator to 'roll' the windows up/down. No
need to take the door apart to change all the mechanism.

RE: SV: [Chevelle-list] suggestions on a 12 bolt

2005-08-12 Thread Ron Sparks
Here are the specs I got on mine (Moser) for my '66: 33 spline axle, posi,
3.55 Richman pro gears, 1350 yoke. The 33 vs. the 30 is supposed to be
stronger, though I don't know if most of us will ever need to find out. I
also added their trick rear end cover. The whole thing set me back $2500 +
$225 shipping. More then I wanted to kick out, but in reality it is getting
harder to find them and you'd end up dumping a bunch of money into a used
unit to get up to par with this one.

You'd think for that kind of coin though they would at least powder coat
it

Note if going for the 1350 yoke you'll have to modify the drive shaft with
one. I wasn't worried about it since my tranny comes with a new one.

One company that Keisler recommended to me (I never did call them though)
was DTS (www.drivetrainspecialists.com). The guy at Keisler that sold me my
tranny was very high on them.

If you can afford a Moser or Currie 12 bolt, you can also afford one of their
bolt-in Ford 9 units. There's huge aftermarket support for the 9 and more
gear ratios options are available. I'm running a Chris Alston Fab 9 rear
in my 69 Elky with Moser 31 spline axles,Detroit Locker diff,Motive Gear
4.11 gearset,and Baer 12 disc brakes.

That was my thought. I upgraded to 33 spline and that
will handle any performance this fellow can afford.
Also, there was a point about the Moser upper control
arm flange casting. They sell some anti-hop brackets
for the factory 12 bolt. This seems to be eliminated
with Moser casting as they raise the upper mount
point which helps with hopping. I think that was the
way it was, I could be wrong.
