Don't know about the speed minder speedo but on a basic 69 speedo that is a
light that says brake and the light comes on when your E-brake is on.

Well, in the spirit of something always having to be broken...

I put in the SFE4 fuse today and I now have dash lights. However, about 5
or
10 minutes after getting dash lights, the generator light came on. It goes
on and off when I turn the headlights on and off. So, I have to see if A)
the alternator is indeed bad B) whatever electrical lead that controls
that
light is hooked up properly and/or C) if the light only comes on when the
 fuse is in.

It's possible that somebody pulled the fuse just so the gen light would
stop
coming on. However, I'd be surprised if that light is on that fuse because
the oil pressure light is not. Seems to me that all the idiot lights
would
be on the same fuse. It's also possible that the alternator just died and
it
has nothing to do with the dash lights or the fuse. It may be just a
 coincidence.

It's nice to be able to see my fuel gauge at night. The speedo is not
correct but it seems like a bulb is out on the left side. I'll have to get
the alternator tested tomorrow (before dark).

Also, does anybody know what the light is at the bottom of the
speedometer?
I have a speedminder speedometer so I was thinking it probably has
something
to do with that. I haven't bothered to see if the speedminder feature
works.
It's turned up all the way so it never goes off.

 Happy motoring,
 John Nasta

Maybe your alternator/regulator was only performing marginally, and when you
put the addition load of a few amps, it's making the gen light come on?

Just a thought...

Thanks Trooper. I never use the E-brake either because the cable is not
hooked up. I actually have to take care of that very soon because I am due
for an inspection at the end of the month. Last year the guy passed me but
said, do me a favor and fix that e-brake cable as soon as you can. I
assured him that I would but a year later I still haven't gotten to it.

I just had the alternator tested and it is putting out 14 volts at the
battery even with the headlights and the generator light on (and the
wipers). The battery was also load tested and it seems to be fine. So, I
don't seem to have a bad alternator or a bad battery, yet the generator
light comes on when the headlights are on. I have HEI and an internal
regulator, and MH built the engine harness forward lamp harness for that
setup. I have a total of 4 wires connected to the alternator. Two go into
the plastic clip, and I assume those must be right. The other two both go
into the rubber boot and are attached to the post at the back of the
alternator. Does that sound correct? Any help is appreciated.

Thank you,

Hey Guys,
Long time reader, first time poster. I have a 70 Chevelle 350/T350 that I have
been restoring for about 5 years. It's almost back on the road (i can't wait).

My question is about the airconditioning system. Mine is fine but I have an
extra system off of a 71 ElCo. Will it fit a 70 chevelle? I dont know what
the changes were from 70 to 71 and a friend wants to buy it for his 70. What
can/can't work? What is different?

Thanks guys,

Erik

It's easy to get the bulb receptacles mixed up and in the wrong holes on the
back of the gauge cluster, John. I noticed similar symptoms on a couple of
my '69s too, except that it was for the oil pressure warning light at the
bottom of the cluster. Check to see that the warning light bulb for your
charging system doesn't have a grey wire coming out of it. Grey wires are
for the dash lights, and if they've been inadvertently switched it might
explain why you have an alternator warning light ONLY when the headlights
are on or the dash lights are illuminated.

It's not real easy to see up in there behind the dash sometimes, and if you
end up taking the gauge carrier out of the dash for a better look, you may
as well replace all your bulbs and spend a little time cleaning the gauge
lens. It'd also be a good time to clean the gauges faces with a blow
brush like the kind photographers use to clean their lenses... You can pick
one up inexpensively at most photo supply stores. It's amazing how much
brighter everything looks with a clean lens, gauge faces, and new bulbs!

Hope this helps!

Thanks Chuck. That definitely would explain why it comes on and goes off
with the headlights. I definitely agree that cleaning the lenses and stuff
is in order. I'll try looking from underneath first though to save time.

I know those blower brushes you are talking about. I also have a compressor
and a blower adaptor (that's what I really use for cleaning my cameras).

SeaFoam really works. I have used it in all
of my engines. the cloud of "carbon" that you get is unreal. When
the intake plenum gasket went out on my 99 ram i ran it through the motor after

[Chevelle-list] I'm baaaaccckkk...

2005-09-20 Thread Craig Ellis

I've been off-list for a lonnnggg time but winters
approaching and it's time to fix all the junk that's wrong with my little red
chevelle. For openers, I'm wondering if anyone has installed one of those repop
1970 SS dashes. I dropped a note to No-Neck but then I remembered this list
LIST!

I've got an original SS but a DPO put an oil gauge in
the dash. I've also got a spiffy replacement (an original 1970 SS dash) that's
perfect but needs rechrome, paint, etc. I'm thinking about just putting one of
those repop numbers in there this winter and waiting until I've got a little
more money to get the good original one ready.

Does anyone have experience with these? Do they look
pretty good? Do they fit well? All help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Craig E.
