RE: [Chevelle-list] Steering column & steering unit!

2005-11-17 Thread Herb Lumpp
Hi Dan,

I have a Flaming River in my El and for the most part it's decent. The
thing I don't like about it is the tilt mechanism. Back when I had manual
steering while trying to manuveure at low speed such as parking, the
steering wheel would ocasionally pop out of the tilt position it was in. I
have power steering now so it doesn't happen as often. I may replace it
down the road with a different brand.

Question number 5. It looks like I may upgrade my steering column. What does
everyone recommend? Flaming River, Ididit, something else?

I plan on upgrading my steering unit to a 12:1. Do you get someone to
rebuild it to spec or buy a new one? Also from whom?

Ididit makes decent stuff but I like GM columns, myself.
AGR doesn't like to rebuild customer boxes anymore. The one I want for my

interesting but I have not heard any feedback from anyone using it,yet.

Clint,

I don’t doubt BAER brakes are wonderful, and probably better than
Wilwood, but the fact remains, the problem I had talking to a rep! I can
understand one time, but three? I’ll go for service every time. BAER must
be having some growing pains. If their business as you say they surely need to
upgrade their tech staff. Apparently they have too few!

I’ll check out the sites about suspension solutions.

Thanks Clint!

one installed spring  is pushing the axle down, causing the

Clint, the only problem I have with Baer's is that you can't
be in a hurry to get them. They take forever (ok, well 6-8 weeks, but crap,
that's like 1/3rd of the summer!). Hell it took me that long just to get a
catalog. They use Road Catalog to sell their catalog ($5)...I bitched after
4 weeks and got 2 (one from Baer and one from RC). You'd think for that kind of
money they get for kits they'd want to get it out to you faster.
The dealer locator on their site is not accurate also. Listed my local
AutoZone as an authorized dealer. You should had heard that call when I was
looking for the rears..

I also thought they could had done a little better on the
install directions. A little generic (the fronts were better then the rear).
...but there is no doubt in their quality.

Be more specific about lack of support,Dan. I've been
dealing with Baer for many years and have had very few issues with them. Baer's
PBR calipers were used on late model Corvettes,Camaros, and Cobra Mustangs. If
you have a problem with them, your local auto parts dealer can take care of you.
Try that with Wilwood,SSBC,or others.

I don't have a problem with tall spindles that are optimized
for A-body cars. B-body spindles weren't made for A-body cars and cause various
problems like excessive bumpsteer, increased turn radius, etc. Do a search on
B-body spindles on Team Chevelle and look for postings by Dennis68. He really
knows his stuff about suspension set-ups.

With your car's combination, any particular reason why you
need an exotic suspension? Just curious.

get the publicity on TV, they look great, but I can have 4 piston 12”

What do you have against the taller spindles? .what problems have you

Just my opinion but here's who you need to talk to about a
complete suspension system. Marcus knows his stuff and his parts really
work like crazy. http://www.scandc.com/
I'm not a fan of B-body spindles.

If you used Baer brakes, this wouldn't be a problem. Don't
know why Wilwood are causing that.

I didn't like my QA1 coilovers because they were too stiff
& harsh. To be fair though,I was running BB springs.

Air Ride Technology doesn't seem to want to stand behind the
stuff they sold me. At this time,I cannot recommend them.

Clint,

I have been in touch with Global West about using all their parts
for a complete front and rear suspension make over! It’s going to cost
over $5000 for the top of the line fix(CAT 5) excluding labor.

There has to be some work done on the 12 bolt. C clip eliminator
installed and special press on Ford bearing in the diff and some special axles.
Something about the 12 bolt not working correctly with the Wilwood 4 piston
brakes! Does this sound correct to you? I wish I would have known all this
before I rebuilt the 12 bolt!

I will use the  taller spindles. They say it only lower

rep acted like he just woke up. I know it’s being picky, but while on
hold they have nothing; no music, advertisements. It makes you feel like you
may have been disconnected on the phone, but are not sure. One wait was close
to 30 minutes. Yes, some times I can be tenacious waiting! They have a hell of
a following on TV by Foose and others. And I’m sure they make a quality
product, but damn…..three times a problem…that was enough. Even the
girl answering the phone seemed like she didn’t care. I never had the
problem with Wilwood. Baer may be better than Wilwood, but I’ll go for
support every time.

Doug with Global West, has been great to deal with. I know they are not
cheap, but the quality is there. Doug does much of their R&D work. They
handle Wilwood, but never said anything negative about Baer if you chose to use
them instead. I have called Wilwood several times and have had a pleasant
experience each call. Maybe I’m calling on the wrong day to Baer! Also
using their dealer locator online SUCKS for my area!

As far as the suspension goes: 1. I have the money from my incentive 2.
It’s the next major upgrade to my car 3. I’m probably crazy!(GRIN)

Clint while talking to a rep about my suspension upgrade. He said it
would help, if I upgraded my steering to the 12:1 ratio from the 16:1 it has at
present. I talked to one man that converts steering mechanisms, and he gave me
the impression there was so little difference from 12:1 Vs 16:1. The suspension
guy begs to differ!

If I change my steering, whom do you recommend?

Clint, the only problem I have with Baer's is that you can't
be in a hurry to get them. They take forever (ok, well 6-8 weeks, but crap,
that's like 1/3rd of the summer!). Hell it took me that long just to get a
catalog. They use Road Catalog to sell their catalog ($5)...I bitched
after 4 weeks and got 2 (one from Baer and one from RC). You'd think for that
kind of money they get for kits they'd want to get it out to you faster.

The only problem I have with Baer is their support stinks! I know they
get the publicity on TV, they look great, but I can have 4 piston 12”
Wilwoods for the price of a two piston Baer! Plus Wilwood has been great with
their support! A good product with no support is a pain in the A**!

What do you have against the taller spindles? .what problems have you
observed or heard?

Just my opinion but here's who you need to talk to about a
complete suspension system. Marcus knows his stuff and his parts really
work like crazy. http://www.scandc.com/
I'm not a fan of B-body spindles.

If you used Baer brakes, this wouldn't be a problem. Don't
know why Wilwood are causing that.

I didn't like my QA1 coilovers because they were too stiff
& harsh. To be fair though,I was running BB springs.

Air Ride Technology doesn't seem to want to stand behind the
stuff they sold me. At this time,I cannot recommend them.
