  Hi Karl,

I've been doing engine work for over 40 years and am just about to fire
up my brand new 350. I was considering doing it without ignition wire looms
but am now rethinking it. My ignorance about whether it would harm the
silicone wires was easily cured by asking the Chevelle list, I keep my laptop
in the garage while working there.

Unfortunately, for Vin to learn punctuation and capitalization will
require several years of middle school and high school English classes.

  Thanks for the help.

This, coming from the guy whose grammatical masterpieces include:
"just drain the oil's and fuel start a new you'll be fine"
"people are there worst enemy to them selves."
and:
"very cool---I've after being in auto bus. alot off stuff is
interchangeable."

or this wonderful, oh-so-cohesive treatise:

Really now. I think you have little room to be calling other people
"the dumbest dumb people" when you can't manage basic grammar & spelling or
form a cohesive thought.

Was Dennis' question kind of "dumb"? Yeah, but he's probably new to
this kind of stuff. You, on the other hand, are obviously an adult, yet you
lack the intellectual fortitude to properly use homophones, which kids learn in
2nd grade.

Don't be a dick when someone doesn't know something that you do. Ignore

The squeal may be the converter not yet full of fluid. I hope. If so as John
has stated you won't do any more harm by idling engine until all parts get
fluid. gm66

If it’s broken, I don’t think you'll make it any worse by trying it again.
Once a transmission is "smoked" they typically want to do a total rebuild.
I've never heard an automatic transmission squeal at idle though.
Personally, I would try it, and try to get the fluid level right asap.

Pulled my car out yesterday to see if I could get her to move under her own
power. It has been a long time but finally got the drive train hooked up and
the brakes working.

Started her up and let it idle for about 5 minutes. When I went to put it in
gear it didn't move. Shut her down and checked out the linkage and all was
fine. Started it back up and tried again no luck.

I know I had put fluid in it when I mounted the trans. I remember making a
point of doing it just so I wouldn't forget later. I decided to check
anyway. It wasn't showing on the stick. Figuring that it was just a little
low I left her idle while I added the fluid. Ended up taking 4 quarts. When
I reached the dipstick something started to squeal. I shut her down and
haven't been back since.

It was a fresh re-build and I am really hoping that I didn't kill it. In
hind sight, the transmission cooler and the torque converter must have
sucked up what I put in it.

Any thoughts? Haven't got up the nerve to turn the key again. How much
damage can I do in idle with that much fluid missing?

2006-03-13 Thread John Nasta

If it’s broken,
I don’t think you'll make it any worse by trying it again. Once a transmission is
"smoked" they typically want to do a total rebuild. I've never heard
an automatic transmission squeal at idle though. Personally, I would try it,
and try to get the fluid level right asap.

kill my TH350?

Pulled
my car out yesterday to see if I could get her to move under her own power. It
has been a long time but finally got the drive train hooked up and the brakes
working.

I decided to check anyway.
It wasn't showing on the stick. Figuring that it was just a little low I left
her idle while I added the fluid. Ended up taking 4 quarts. When I reached the
dipstick something started to squeal. I shut her down and haven't been back since.

It was a fresh re-build and I am really hoping that I didn't kill it. In hind
sight, the transmission cooler and the torque converter must have sucked up
what I put in it.

Any thoughts? Haven't got up the nerve to turn the key again. How much damage
can I do in idle with that much fluid missing?

Pelle,

Even though you won, you can always ask the seller if he has a flex
plate for a big block.  If he does he might be willing to swap
them for you and adjust the price a bit.  When I was looking for a 454
block a while back, I found a nice 427 block (lotsa $$$).
I contacted the seller and asked if he had a 454 block that he was
willing to sell, he did, and I got a great deal on it.  It can't hurt
to ask.

Pelle,
A flexplate is for an automatic transmission and is much
lighter than a flywheel which is for a manual transmission. They
both have the ring gear that the starter engages to turn the engine
over.

I've been doing engine work for over 40 years and am just about to
fire up my brand new 350.  I was considering doing it without
ignition wire looms but am now rethinking it.  My ignorance about
whether it would harm the silicone wires was easily cured by asking the
Chevelle list, I keep my laptop in the garage while working there.

Unfortunately, for Vin to learn punctuation and capitalization

Re: [Chevelle-list] Quick question!

2006-03-13 Thread Jim Dos

Pelle,
in the simplest of
terms..the flexplate is used with an automatic transmission, and the flywheel is
used with a manual gearbox.  The flywheels is much heavier..usually at
least 25+ pounds, and is thicker. They both come in 153 and 168 tooth
sizes.

Pelle,
A flexplate is for an automatic transmission and is much lighter
than a flywheel which is for a manual transmission. They both have the ring
gear that the starter engages to turn the engine over.

Quick & dirty answer:

2 - Flywheel used with manual trans

Flywheels are much thicker than
flexplates.

So you're saying that if someone honestly doesn't know
something about their cars they shouldn't ask a question? Especially since
you think that they are 'the dumbest dumb people'?

This list has the best mix of knowledgeable folks coupled with
people who normally wouldn't even think about working on their car, but do
because they can get good intelligent (for the most part) information,
without being told they are dumb for asking. Sometimes people just need some
reassurance that their line of thinking is correct so that they can move on
with some confidence.

Maturity and respect for fellow Chevelle owners is what make this list
great. See if you can gather some up.

So you're saying that if someone honestly doesn't know
something about their cars they shouldn't ask a question? Especially since you
think that they are 'the dumbest dumb people'?

This list has the best mix of knowledgeable folks coupled with
people who normally wouldn't even think about working on their car, but do
because they can get good intelligent (for the most part) information, without
being told they are dumb for asking. Sometimes people just need some
reassurance that their line of thinking is correct so that they can move on
  with some confidence.

Maturity and respect for fellow Chevelle owners is what make this list
great. See if you can gather some up.

Hi Karl,
I've been doing engine work for over 40 years and am just about to fire up
my brand new 350.  I was considering doing it without ignition wire
looms but am now rethinking it.  My ignorance about whether it would harm
the silicone wires was easily cured by asking the Chevelle list, I keep my
laptop in the garage while working there.

Unfortunately, for Vin to learn punctuation and capitalization will
require several years of middle school and high school English classes.

Thanks for the help.

I don't normally weigh it, but Phil and Shawn are
right. I think, I am pretty sharp on a lot of stuff
but I get "scatter-brained" sometimes. Too much other
stuff going on in my head as life tends to cause.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with asking
questions. We see the same things asked over and over
again and that is what the delete button is for.

Sorry to rant.

I think I already know what the answer is, but

In order for me to install my heater box cover
with fan motor on the firewall side, do I have to remove the fender and
inner fender? I was thinking with the front tire removed, I might be able to
get the inner fender out from underneath the car, but since it's tucked in
up front with the lights and all, that may be a problem. too. Anybody have
any good tricks up their sleeve?
