Re: [Chevelle-list] Chevelle-list Digest, Vol 33, Issue 42

2006-04-16 Thread Gene Palladino
Larry,As Devin said regarding the hole in your floor for your Comp +
shifter.I had fabricated a tunnel cover when installing the Comp.+ shifter
in my 69 El Camino a while back. But I have the engine out now and it is
going back in this coming Thursday. While it's out I replaced my cover with
the non console tunnel cover and I used rivnuts to install so that it is
removable for maintenance to the shifter. If you plan to install a console I
would use the console tunnel cover for future installation. You want to close
up that hole in the floor.Later Gene

Although i only post very rarely, i do want you all to know that i DO
read each and every message posted on this mailing list, and as most that
know me can tell you, other than changing my own oil, i'm pretty much
''mechanically challenged.'' Since I've joined this mailing list, I have
learned ALOT about the upkeep/troubleshooting of my Chevelle. I just
wanted to thank all of you who have ever posted anything on this board, I
am much more informed about my car thanks to each and every one of you.
It's hard to express my appreciation in a short email, but as of now, it's
the best i can do. Thanks again.

Timothy,Gene again,I just went thru this last month,I had oil pressure
problems with my great "Jasper" crate motor,350/350.I wanted to check my
main bearings without removing the engine,it is possible but the work
involved is not worth your time.I was able to do so,I had to remove my bell
housing for the oil pan to clear it has to come off towards the rear after
you have jacked up the engine as high as possible!Than you also have to
insert blocks of wood when the engine is raised between the motor mounts
and pads, than you have to balance the motor with a jack so it does not
fallout and hurt you or make up a rear engine support that will hang on to
the firewall and attach to the engine, have I still got your attention? As
said earlier it is really a lot easier to remove the engine. In my case all
I wanted to do was plactigage my bearings, but the damage to mine was far
more than I expected, returned the plastigage to Auto Zone and I removed the
engine after all was said and done. The time I wasted doing all this because
I was thick headed the engine comes out a lot faster and as a by product
you can clean and do a better job of replacing your pan, etc:In my case I
have the equipment to remove the engine but I was being thickheaded!Later

Tim

I had to remove my small block from mine to change the timing cover gasket
and oil pan gasket. I attempted to do it in the car, just wasn't worth the
time and energy. I don't think you can really get the motor high enough to
remove the pan in a 64-67 A body(it is possible, but you have to pull too
much)

just my 2 cents

Larry-- You can use the big hurst shifter boot
and it will cover the hole, but it's not a big deal to install the 4 speed
hump.  I installed one in my car a couple of years ago while the tranny
was out.  It will only fit in one place.  I found I did have to
open it up a little to work with the Hurst shifter, but it makes for a much
cleaner installation.

I've cut the floor for my 4 speed shifter and
the tranny is in place. I have a Hurst Competition Plus shifter. I do not
have a center console, although I would like to get one some day when
everything else is done with the car.

  My question -

  1.    Do I need to get the
shifter hump if I want to get the shifter boot to fit/seal
  properly?

  2.    If so, are there carpets
  available to accommodate the hump?

I would prefer to just carpet over the floor
as is and install a shift boot over it if I can get away with
  it...

installed the hump, how did the carpet fit?

Larry-- You can use the big hurst shifter boot
and it will cover the hole, but it's not a big deal to install the 4 speed
hump.  I installed one in my car a couple of years ago while the tranny
was out.  It will only fit in one place.  I found I did have to open
it up a little to work with the Hurst shifter, but it makes for a much cleaner
  installation.

I would prefer to just carpet over the floor as
is and install a shift boot over it if I can get away with
it...

Thanks,

Jimmy,
I have Firestone Indy 500's on my '70. The size is 255 60's on all four corners.
I have them on 15 X 7 5 spoke chrome Cragar look alikes. They fit just fine no
rubbing and had to do no modifications to the fender lips or any where else, had
plenty of room between the rear inner fender and the tire. You can see for
yourself by clicking on the second link in my signature.

I just brought it up again on the web using the address that I sent. Yes,
it is an old tractor sight but if you go on the site you can get alot of oil
faqs that is relevent today. Try www.atis.net/oil_faq html to see if that
works. gm66

Are you sure about the address. Can you send it again please? I tried the
address to the .net and it gives a old tractor site, but nothing about oil!

Try atis.net/oil_faq website.
Gives comprehensive data on motor oil Specs. by brands etc.Read entire
article if you "dare" to be truly informed on motor oil.

I have purchased replacement aluminum rivets locally (here in SF) and made
a

couple tools to both help hold the rivet heads and expand the bottoms like
factory. When I have finished any of my Chevelles (mostly '67's) they have
all had a factory perfect look without any odd fasteners. I can assist
anyone with this if they live in the area, but if I can do this I'm sure
there are others around everywhere as competent. Ed

Navy
here in San Diego.  Hope you get your 72 will get to where you want it to be in
great shape, with any of these cars it is a labor of love, love to go
fast.  But have to go slow to get it good.  Thanks for serving our
country over there being military is not easy.  Especially when your
dreams are put on hold.  Check out Sac for extra bodies on chevelles or
parts use to live there.

Thanks,

San Diego.

Bette sez-

“Sounds like you are trying
to put together a 72 chevelle, I have one in great shape good to for
sale.  I live here in San Diego and wonder if you might be
interested?”

Well –
the 72 was my first car (yes, this exact same car).  I got it when I was
14 and built it while in High School.  So I guess my quest is to finally
get the car where I always wanted it, but could not come close to affording at
the time.  So since my mission is more
of a labor of love, and less of a mission for a 72, I
have to say that I am not interested.  Not only that, but I am intimately
familiar with nearly every nut, bolt, and twisted body panel so I know exactly
what I am getting myself into.  Unless I find that the frame is rotted out
(not likely since it is a California car) I am starting out with a fairly
straight car.

Sounds like you have a great
car – you can get stupid money for it on Ebay
these days, give it a try.

Folks-

I have spouted off a few times about how I am going
to “finally” get my project started when I return
from overseas.  In keeping with my promise, and my timely return in a few
weeks, I need to start making a checklist to get the old beast fired again
after 7 years dormant.  I know every project is different, but is there a
good list of things to look for before you fire up your project and hit the
road for a new home?  Can anyone help me out?

A few specifics – may help…

72 Chevelle – 350/TH350 combo (tranny with
horseshoe floor shifter)

Drum brakes (non-power) on all 4 corners

Car is 100% complete – full
engine/tranny/exhaust/etc.

Holley 4150 650CFM Vac Sec carb with electric choke
kit

Mallory Comp 9000 billet distributor/coil setup
with Accel 8.8mm wires

Everything else pretty much standard 72 Chevelle
“on
a budget,” daily driver in college fare

Car ran like a champ when I parked it in 1999 for the
last time.

Things I have already figured out:

Tires are shot – need some junkyard jewels to
get me to Fresno (new tires for the Z28 rims will not fit the 17” rims I
have lined up).

Carb needs the squirrel $hi* blown out of it.
Will a 350 burn squirrel $hi*?

Need to procure a battery – probably
from
my brothers 72 Camaro in the barn

Doubt the radiator has any fluid in it anymore
–
need to flush/fill/check for holes (and squirrels)

Change fluids (engine/tranny)

Check fluid level in differential (which is in
desperate need of a ring/pinion/etc.)

I want to head to my Dad’s house on a Friday
in
June (which Friday???) with a bag of parts and a toolbox, and
drive home on Sunday.  Anything I am forgetting?

FYI – the drive will be about 160
miles, mostly interstate (Hwy 99 from Stockton to Fresno).  Any help you
all could provide would be great.

To unsubscribe from this service you must first purchase a
Craft-O-Matic Adjustable Subscription Cancellation Unit. The unit can be
obtained from most hardware stores and dental clinics. Be sure to obtain
the proper permits to operate the unit from the Nuclear Regulatory
Commission and the Food and Drug Administration in Washington D.C. USA.
Be sure to carefully unpack the kit and place each component in its
accompanying mesh safety bag. Mount the Pershing DF4 mesinator on top of
the perforated Gerring Mach 77 refibulator and attach them using the
eight-millimeter torque fork. Be sure that the refibulator is mounted at
a 66 degree angle and properly dispersed so that it is flush with the
curved section of the Pyrex thistle tube. Place the four sections of
the triangular separation gear into the posture cylinder and lock them
into place using the band aid adhesive strip. Insert the wiggling pin
into the wobbling hole, making sure that it seated correctly. Place
the D cell battery and the eleven 9 volt batteries in the power chamber.
The device should be calibrated before operation using the optional
digital corkscrew accessory pack prior to operation. Insert the digital
corkscrew through the electronic combustion service chamber using
caution not to touch the reinforced tungsten igniter control module and
quickly turn the inverter drive to 28.6 degrees. Turn the Craft-O-Matic
Adjustable Subscription Cancellation Unit upside down and hit the bottom
plate with a 48-ounce ball-peen hammer while shaking the unit
vigorously. Force open the door to the incineration valve compartment
and set the pressure gauge to 719 psi. Close the door and seal it shut
with duct tape. The unit should now be properly calibrated and ready to
use. Before activating the Craft-O-Matic Adjustable Subscription
Cancellation Unit, you must first elevate it to a height of 229 feet
above sea level to insure that the unit receives the proper oxygen level
and barometric pressure. Point the aerial to 17 degrees north by
northeast to within the parameters of the Telstar GS-2 weather satellite
and apply pressure to the wing shaft on the southern most section of the
modular accelerator. Using the special ratchet adapter supplied with the
unit, rotate the heater core to the "on" position. The "on" position
has been obtained when the green light begins to flash, signifying that
the red light is about to go off. Once the red light is off, flip
the toggle switch labeled "ON/OFF" to the "ON" position and count to 47
before logging on to the system. Logon using your username and password
and wait for the prompt. Once prompted you must check the box with the
appropriate action you wish to take and then press the pressure release
button and turn off the compressor while turning the hand crank at 231
meters per minute. Next, press control, alt, delete, caps lock, shift,
number lock, escape and tab simultaneously. Press enter. You will
have one second to complete the procedure. If you fail to respond in the
time limit allowed, simply purchase a new Craft-O-Matic Adjustable
Subscription Cancellation Unit and start from the beginning. Please
remember that this is the only way we will accept for you to unsubscribe
from this service. We have made every attempt to simplify the procedure
for your convenience. Failure to comply with the unsubscribe policy
will result in immediate termination of your subscription so please
follow the above directions closely Regards

Re: [Chevelle-list] Changing out heater core in 68 SS with A/C.

2006-04-16 Thread John Nasta
Thanks. I'll be saving these posts. I'm going to do this on my '70 while the
nose is off and thereby learn how to do it on my '69 w/o killing it or
myself.

Right now I have a heater hose adapter (I think it's 5/8" to 3/4") on the
'69 and I just have the hoses plugged into each other to bypass the core. It
would be nice to have heat before next winter.

Title: Re: will it live again (response)

Bette sez-

“Sounds like you are trying to put together a 72 chevelle, I have one in great shape good to for sale.  I live here in San Diego and wonder if you might be interested?”

Well – the 72 was my first car (yes, this exact same car).  I got it when I was 14 and built it while in High School.  So I guess my quest is to finally get the car where I always wanted it, but could not come close to affording at the time.  So since my mission is more of a labor of love, and less of a mission for a 72, I have to say that I am not interested.  Not only that, but I am intimately familiar with nearly every nut, bolt, and twisted body panel so I know exactly what I am getting myself into.  Unless I find that the frame is rotted out (not likely since it is a California car) I am starting out with a fairly straight car.

Sounds like you have a great car – you can get stupid money for it on Ebay these days, give it a try.
