Re: [Chevelle-list] Crate Engines

2008-05-03 Thread Chuck Speake
I talked to my cousin today who lives not far from Hi-Tech I should have
talked to him before I bought the engine from them. They have a very bad
reputation around there. They hire a bunch of 18 year old kids with not
much experience because they don't have to pay them very much. Its all high
production work by minimal experienced people. Not technical or
professional engine builders. That is what I was told. I am sure GM
workers are better trained and experienced.

Has anyone ever had a good experience with a crate engine ? I bought a
small block Chevy, crate engine, through Jasper several years ago to put in
my boat. It seemed like an economical alternative to rebuilding the one I
had. Long story short, it failed about 30 days out of warranty. When we took
it apart to see why, it had been over-bored and sleeved. Who sleeves a small
block gas engine ?!! Just wondering if there is a reliable mass-production
engine builder/rebuilder, performance or stock, out there ?

Don't you just love that everyone is using the term 'crate engine' for
anything rebuilt. Kind of like jumping on the 'Muscle Car' bandwagon with
any car made from 64 to 72. Some publications are going back as far a 1955
and applying the term.

DON’T go to Hi-Tech in Salt Lake City. After 30 miles the rocker arm studs
started pulling out around #4. Engine sent back to them for inspection, and
they said there was nothing wrong with it and if I did not want it back they
were going to reassemble it and sell it to the next person that ordered that
particular engine. I told them to keep it. Guess they screwed up and it
didn’t last until the warranty ran out.

  I bought a 300HP 350 crate motor from GM almost 10 years ago & can't say
enough good about it. Brand new with warrantee. Never caused a bit of
trouble, no leaks & hasn't used any oil between changes. Unless you want
something very specific, I'd say the GM motors are an excellent choice.
Just don't pay list price

[Chevelle-list] I-40 Eastbound Convoy

2008-05-03 Thread Bill Lessenberry
It's May 3rd, time to begin the planning for the convoy to
Chevelle-a-bration in Goodlettsville, Tennessee. I'm sending this
email to the participants in the '06 convoy and some other folks to
get a head count and to tell ya'll about a new event happening
Tuesday night in North Little Rock.
Last year the travelling folks stayed at the Holiday Inn Express
Hotel & Suites at 4306 McCain Blvd in North Little Rock. Here's the
website-
http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/ex/1/en/hotel/litmb?rpb=hotel&crUrl=/h/d/hi/1/en/hotelsearchresults
This is a nice place with easy access to I-40 without any morning
rush hour traffic hassles.
The plan for now is to leave the motel a 9:00 AM on Wednesday June
4th. If we keep our speed to 60~65 mph that will put us in Memphis
around noon. We'll get some lunch (is the Cajun Catfish Restaurant
still OK??) and meet up with the Memphis group and head on to Nashville.

Les Saville has graciously offered to feed us barbeque brisket, pork
butt, and chicken with the fixings at his house on Tuesday night,
June 3rd. Les's home is only a couple of miles from the Holiday Inn,
and he lives on a lightly travelled street, so there won't be a
problem driving your cars to his place and parking there. He will
need to know how many folks are coming by Friday, May 16th so he can
get the food. Any of you semi-local guys (Morrillton, Russellville,
Conway, etc.) need to come over & eat with us even if you're not
staying in NLR that night. Water and soft drinks will be available,
you're on your own for beer and other alcohol.

Please email or call me with any suggestions, my cell # is
501-425-8136 (leave a message, I don't have it on very often) shop #
is 501-868-5870, 9:30~5:30 Monday through Friday. I'll be posting
this on Team Chevelle in the I-40 thread in the Cruise-In Forum also.

Looking forward to a great time!!

Re: [Chevelle-list] Another Question HELP PLEASE!

2008-05-03 Thread Mike Holleman
Dave, The 700r4 does not use a kickdown cable. The cable is a TV cable,
throttle valve. You need to get the right brackets and make sure it is adjusted
correctly or your 700r4 will die a quick death. The 700 is not computor
controlled. The one wire needed would be for the lockup converter if you are
using one and the trans will have to have the internal solenoid installed to
control this if used. One of the best ways to switch this is by changing your
brake light switch to one for use with cruise control. It has two functions,
one normally open, one normally closed. Get a little professional help on this
conversion and you will be very happy with the OD trans.

Got my Beaumont out of storage and drove it last weekend. I got a new job

am putting a 700 R4 ( gas price ) in and was wondering if any one has wiring
diagrams for it or any one has done this and What will I run into. I already
made new drive shaft, have new throttle bracket for kick down cable. Also
bought speedometer piece that will take a cable. Was also wondering what kind
of gear I will have in first with 336 and 15" tires?

  Any Help very much appreciated.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Another Question HELP PLEASE!

2008-05-03 Thread Rick Schaefer
It is relatively easy to connect the lockup. Some basic info is here:
http://www.chevelles.net/links/WorkShop/Manual_Auto_Tranny/ And if you
search the Tranny Forum at chevelle tech, OnaBudget (Rob Mirabelle) posted
the most complete list of GM part numbers that you will need. It was a few
years back, but I'd bet the info is still there.

Its been almost 10 years since I converted mine. As I recall you change
1 solenoid in the tranny pan, move a couple of wires, and connect 12V & a
ground to the electrical connector on the side of the tranny. Optionally
you can add a vacumn switch on the 12V input to unlock so it will unlock
when you get on it.

You've probably heard it before, but TV cable adjustment is critical. The
tranny will not last 50 miles if it is not adjusted correctly.
