[Chevelle-list] Am I Cool.........

2008-10-10 Thread Rick Schaefer
Or what :D. Just had to brag on myself a bit. May not be much to
others, but I finally resurected the A/C system on my El Camino. Its been
inop for 3 or 4 years for a variety of reasons. It was just never a
priority to get it fixed.About a month ago I started on it by pulling
the evaporator and condensor to clean them thoroughly. While I was at it,
I removed the heater box to reseal, and try to get rid of an annoying
rattle from it.
Got it back together a week ago and its blowing cold air again.
Output of the center vents is 42* less than ambient air. I still need to
put the gauges back on and adjust the charge - I intentionally left it a
little short, butIT WORKS!Just in time for winter.

The compressor (rebuilt) initially had a front seal leak, but after a
day or 2 of driving it apparently fixed itself. I cleaned up the oil on the
inner fender hood and its been dry since. Not sure that understand how
or why, but I'll take the result and hope that it doesn't return.

And if you have complaints about the volume of air flow from your
heater or A/C check your underdash ducts. Between the heater box ducts
there were numerous places where the air could leak. I know I got most all
of the leaks and air flow is so much better than before.

have a great Columbus Day weekend.

Rick, did you go with 134 or r12? I have a 65 and converted to 134. It just
doesn't cool as good. Has a small leak, if I can find that I will go back to
r12 as I have 30 lbs of the stuff.

I was told the older units will not work very well with the 134 and either
its back to r12 or get a vintage setup in the car.

I bought a replacement set for my 70 Chevelle from either Year One, C.A.R.S.
Inc, or OPG I can't remember which. It comes with the isolation mounting
bushings and the screws. Three each.

Ridiculously priced though, or at least I thought so, but if you want the
correct original style there are not a lot of options. Maybe a parts yard
that you could go and pull them off of one of the parts cars.

Thanx for all the kudos.
Darrel, I converted to R134. Everything is factory except that I had the
POA valve adjusted for use with R134. It was done by the big A/C Co
(forget their name now) who are in Tampa. They cleaned, rebuilt (whatever
that involves) and adjusted it for 134. Many people recommend changing
the condensor to a parallel flow unit, but I think with the small cabin of
an el camino that may not be necessary.

I bought a vacuum pump off eBay. Expansion valve, dryer, o-ring kit,
nylog ( thread sealer), system flush, and system oil from ACKITS.COM and
learned from the forum at ACKITS and other internet sources.

The factory system used 60 ounces of R12, and experts recommend 80%
charge of 134. I was shooting for 48 ounces,.Stopped at 42 and have
driven it with that. This weekend I'll put the gauges on, and post the
readings at the forum at ACKITS. I don't have enough experience to
determine if the charge is right but someone there will make
recommendation.

Anyway, its not Rocket Science. I might be singing another tune if I
had problems, but so far I'm happy. And yes, just in time for winter, but
come spring (and spring comes early in West Texas) I'll be ready.

I haven't used it on my chevelle but I did use it on my '86 Corvette prior
to me selling it - My vette was a deep wine color and the clay bar brought
out the richness of the paint - Secret only do a small area at a time back
and forth, not in a circular motion; keep the surface of the car wet and
constantly fold the bar into itself similar to using bread dough - Most
important - if you accidently drop it on the ground DO NOT REUSE IT
You'll end up damaging your paint - Also once you use it on your wheels DO
NOT REUSE IT ON THE BODY OF THE CAR!!! The clar bar will pick up any brake
