Re: [Chevelle-list] Aluminum Heads..

2007-07-24 Thread BAINEY, WALTER
Those heads should bolt on but the Intake will be “vortec” style and not our
vintage style. Some claims that the vortec heads do not have all the
accessory bolt holes as vintage iron. In the handful of vortec headed vehicles
I have worked on I haven’t run into any issues.

2007-07-09 Thread BAINEY, WALTER
I don't have specifics but I run Moser axles in my car and hope to help. It's
been 12-15yrs so things are fuzzy.

1. I don't remember thread locker but would use high heat/high strength. I
heated my retainer rings with a torch and dropped them down the shaft and into
place.

2. I used the axle shaft bolt holes for the backing plate. Did you cut the
axle housing off and remove the 4 bolt holes? If you didn't the holes /bearing
retainer will line up and work.

Any help with Moser C-Clip Eliminators?

I have sent two messages to Moser Engineering about this and haven't heard back

to Moser - has anyone here solved the same issue?

I have two issues with the installation of C-Clip Eliminator kit 9200 on a GM
12-bolt 8.875 axle that need to be resolved before I can continue.

1.) The instruction sheet mentioned adding threadlocker to the axle shaft where
it will be pressed to the bearing. What threadlocker do you recommend? A
Loctite 200 series threadlocker or 600 series for shaft bonding?

2.) The axle has no backing plates, there is a rear disc brake conversion that
bolts to the opposite side of the housing flange. I was hoping you have come
across this before and had spacers on hand. I included a drawing of what I
sent to our fabricator - I hope my measurements are close. Can you either
verify if my hole dimensions are correct or forward me a detailed machining
drawing of the housing end?

Thank you for your help,

The PCV valve (positive crankcase ventilation) is designed to remove
the harmful blow-by gases in the crankcase. The PCV valve is designed to have
"variable flow" which uses manifold vacuum to draw crankcase vapors into the
intake manifold. During idle, manifold vacuum is very high and blow-by
pressure is very low - the pintle inside the valve will retract against a
spring and only allow a small amount of blow-by to enter the manifold. If the
spring pressure is nearly equal to the force on the valve from the vacuum the
pintle will bounce and make a rattling sound. This can happen if there is low
manifold vacuum at idle due to a long duration camshaft or late ignition timing
- or the spring in the valve wore out.

Replace the valve. You'll pay around $3.00.

A mini vac or power bleeder can make the job faster/easier. I usually
bench bleed the MC and use the pump/bleed method with 2 folks...a new

I replaced. Sometimes it takes a while...so you might need a snickers

If the tire is on the ground there isn't pressure pushing up on the
upper control arm... But when you remove the upper attaching point
things can go wrong. I know many folks that use the jack/floor method
to remove springs. Just be careful as the springs/weight of car is very
unforgiving. Hopefully someone will chime in with a detailed process on
how to do this properly.

I have used spring compressors to take some of the danger factor out of

Yes the lower control arm pulls the upper control arm down but there's
no

counter force pulling the upper control arm in the opposite direction!?

In other words, the upper control arm follows the lower and if the lower

control arm is fixed (resting on the tire or on a floor jack) so is the
upper!?

Unless one lets the lower control arm hang on the upper via the caliper?

I won't touch anything unles I'm 110% sure!!!

Re: [Chevelle-list] big block headers

2007-03-19 Thread BAINEY, WALTER
It moves the pipes around. My hookers fit but the slight move at the
head changed things and spots on top that were tight weren't and I had
to ding one of my wrap around the frame pipes. With the taller valve
covers and valve cover rails I had to move the master cylinder booster
to the side when I adjusted the valves. About 2 years of that and I
sold the heads off. Went back to worked iron 781 oval ports. Enough of
that ramble..

Good luck on your quest. If a pipe is only slightly touching you can
ding them. If hitting badly it is possible you received a bad set or
misboxed set. Is there a part number stamped in the header?

they have D shaped exhaust ports, so I need the primary tubes to be at
least
2". Does anybody know what will fit? They do not need to be Headman

they look great!

This was an interesting experience for me. I had not previously dyno'd
anything, ever. I was not able to make any adjustments on the spot as I
had wanted due to a clearance issue, but I did get one good pull to use
as a baseline. The first 3 pulls were done back to back, and afterward
we were checking the computer and the ignition reference wires had
vibrated off of the coil, so the first 3 were useless. My right slick
was rubbing on the tailpipe with my car tied down on the dyno, so after
my 4th pull we actually had some numbers. I wasn't able to go any
further however.

Both horsepower and torque were very nice smooth curves, with a max hp
of 423.1 at 5600 and 455.9 ft/lb at 4300. Fuel curve didn't get close
to 14:1 until 4700 rpm. It started out at 18.2:1 at 3000. I'll take
care of this before I go back for more pulls with a different cam on the
accelerator pump. I may have to do some jetting changes as well, but
it's pretty good in the upper range so I think the jetting is fairly
close.
