I kept my wife (I do have some smarts) BUT "we" sold the car she drove to
make a down payment on

some furniture for our first Apartment ...(49 dollars a month Rent) ..

BUT LOOKING back I sure wish we had kept her OLD carand it was rather
old...10 years ! and at that time (1965) nobody kept a car more then 3
years because after 3 years every car was junk...

It was a 55 Chevy(Belair 2 Door Hardtop, V8 with 3 on the
treeTurquoise and white..).

it did however use a little oil...like a quart a day !

The car "we" kept My 61 VW it simply did not use oil and It got better
gas milage and at 25 cents a gallon for gas it was important ...

BUT even at the prices at BJ this years I would still keep my
wife...

Re: [Chevelle-list] Should I sell or should I wait?

2005-09-14 Thread Bob G

I also can not tell you much about E-bay as i honestly never had the
BALLS to drop my money on anything sight unseen..
BUT:
In my way of thinking...(not normal to be sure)... I would be selling a
TOY...such as a Chevelle only for a couple of reasons...
1.  I really needed the money...or I had a damn good use for the
money...l
2.  I no longer got enough seat time in the car to REALLY enjoy
it...
3.  I was offered a lot more money for the car then I though it was
worth TO ME... this has absolutely nothing to do with
the cars actually worth...I value a car for the
smiles per mile it gives me.see number 2 above

That said I did sell my very highly modified 68 SS396 Chevelle in April a
few weeks after Spring Carlisle ..

My reasons were simple...
I was offered much more money for it then it was worth TO ME...and it was
a lot less then 28K...
Mine was barely street-able ... I used it maybe 8-10 times at the strip
last summer and I was fighting age (I am in my 60's) and my
reaction times were becoming embarrassing...I was just not enjoying
trying to beat my own reaction times rather then turning better
ET's...
As far as Chevelles appreciating at 5 to 10 percent a year I honestly do
not know...I never noticed much of a increase until this year..and it was
not only Chevelles that shot up thru the roof...ask some of the long time
Mopar boys...  And will it continue?...Heck nobody
knows...
I will tell you I still have 64,72,76,79  & 95 Corvettes in the
garage but I miss the Chevelle...and have been looking for The right El
Camino to replace it with...one that is almost a turn key vehicle ..and
is completely street-able...hell I may even buy one with an automatic
Tranny I just want to drive it ...
Lots of luck...

From time to time I wonder what a highly modified Chevelle (stock
appearance outside) SS Convertible is worth.  I know they are
accrueing at $1500.-$2,000. dollars a year.

It's a '68 Chevelle SS Convertible:

Sea Frost Green (silver green) origional color,

was painted a couple years ago cheap, showing,

wear but still looks pretty good and get a lot of

compliments.  Has all new repop trim and fresh

stock appearing 1" black stripe around body

as they came with from factory.

4 speed M-20 (origional 3 speed man. I have for it)

Origional engine (Now Edelbrock Aluminum

heads), I have the origional 325 iron heads,

origionally buckets, now headrested recovered

buckets correct for year.  Tilt column correct

with correct wood grain wheel, disc brakes,

custom with '92 1LE Z-28 Camaro Disks,

aluminum radiator.

No a.c, manual top., no console, 15"rallye rims,

origional NOS caps and 14" wheels available.

Have origioal AM radio, now with satellite radio

Alpine, and 360 watt and four integrated speakers,

concealed.

4-link F-41 NOT origional, and aftermarket,

Hotchkis, KYB Shocks.  Closed rear end.

(open = stock), Eaton.

670 Avenger Holley w/ auto choke.

Top is new 5 year, not origional but the best

available, "black"a couple months old, and

black interior, less than two years old.

Deluxe seatbelts.

Runs very well, just keep filling with gas!

Is asking 28K out of line?  Or start bid at

20K in e-Bay?  A lot of people tell me that

e-Bay! is not a good place to list.  Feelings?

Any ideas?

Those are my questions:

E-Bay any good?

Should I ask so much?

Should I sell at all?

Pics avaiulable to interested persons.

Car really moves, and handles, Lowered one inch

(Hotchkis), engine recently rebuilt just broke in

(1500 miles).  Turn key car.  Drive anywhere.
It's

very reliable, and drives well with nearly new

tires, new alternator, headlights, oil change, etc.

This list is great!

I must be the odd man out... I removed a single 18 foot door and

Why...?
Simple the door could not be "fully" opened when I had a car up on the
lift...close but no cigar..unless I shoved the lift all the way to the
rear... Both My garages are 24 foot deep if you make your garage

28 or 30 foot deep then it cane be done...

Long Story short. I replaced all 5 of my garage doors with roll up
doors (like those found on loading docks..)...they take up absolutely no
room inside the garage..(ok ..one (1) foot maybe)...

 My Suggestions...

1.go 12 foot high...if possible ...never know when you discover the need vs
the want for a lift..and it takes 12 foot to get my wives Mini Van all
the way up...)

2. Push the rear wall back another 4 foot if possible to allow the garage
to be 28 foot deep...

pretty cold on Thursday so my first purchase was 5 sweat shirts at a dollar

I noticed that the asking prices on Thursday for Chevelles were in the low
30's for BB cars and
high 20's for SB cars... Friday most of them were already sold... so the
selling prices had to be somewhat near that range... Hell a 68 Shelby

I do not know what you really want done BUT one of our members in our

do some work out of his home for some of his regular customers
etc...selling the machines he will not be needing etc...

He is into cars ...Corvettes that is... owns a 72 and a C4 & C5 ...he
dropped a 502 Merlin into his C4.
manufactured all his own Pullies etc..cut the distributor down in height
etc to fit under the hood...quite a bit of squishing had to be done...

I have NO Clue if he even would be able to handle what you need
done...work was sufficient to have tHis C4 featured in Corvette Fever or
Vette Magazine within the last year or so ..somewhat like the article on
your El Camino .

May be worth a phone call... or he may know a shop that can handle what you
need done...

Honestly if there is a clear cut and dry right and wrong way to
store a car I would have to believe the boys in Canada would have the
"right" answers... But I live in Maryland and we do not have winters that last
more then 5 months and it is nowhere near as harsh...

I have been storing my" toys" for almost 40 years now...and since I have
never had any problems (except I am now anal about mice ).. I'll continue
to just change the oil the day I close the garage doors ,
hook up a float charger to the battery, may or may not cover the cars
depending if I have some "winter" work to do yada yada...then in the spring
I start them up drive in to the gas station and fill the tanks drive home
change the oil and enjoy my summer...

Whatever gas is in the tank this time of year is what will stay in the tank
all winter...(But to be truthful I almost always fill the tank after each
use...so the gas tanks are almost always full...

I do not start the cars over the winter unless absolutely necessary and if
I do that car will be left running at
idle for at least 30 minutes...

I will also be honest in saying that IF I take off the gas cap I can see
signs of rust on the inside surface of the cap... but I have seen this on a
new cap I installed in June and looked at it again in September of the same
year...

can get condensation in the tank on any cool night and the air is drier in

fresh gas in the spring. I have always gone with the latter and have not had
any problems as a result. I agree that it's a good idea to start it about
once a month if you can. Just buy 50 cents worth of gas, prime the carb with
a little and put the rest in the tank. That way the gas in the tank never
gets really old.

Re: [Chevelle-list] electrical diagnostics in Phx area

2004-10-30 Thread Bob G

Thanks for the reply.
As I said in my message, I know how to diagnose the problem, my problem is
that I'm too arthritic to do it myself. Five years ago I would never have
written what I did. I simply would have done it. Those days are gone
forever.
I wasn't looking for a how-to. I was looking for a reliable shop in the
Phoenix area that can do it for me.
-As a 61 year old and spending a lot of those years laying
on cold concrete under cars I honestly can understand... Have no clue as
to how bad I would be if I had not invested in a lift years ago

HOWEVER Chevy also has a lighter weight solenoid spring ( ACDelco part
number 1958679) that retails for about 5 bucksand any shop... or full
service station ...or the kid next door ..should be able to swap out the
stock spring from the solenoid. in about 15 minutes...

I have had at least 90 percent "Cures" from heat soak problems just by
replacing the spring...and I can not think of any of my friends who have
not had complete cures doing the same...

The replacement spring is just able to compress, thus engage the starter,
under hot situations as it does not require nearly the electric energy as
the stock spring...

Quick, easy, and cheap... and like I said almost always works..and the
"fix" is FOREVER...

I now keep a apare spring in the garage all the time & I keep the part
number right next to my computer since I am always giving it out...

But Wayne has also hit the proverbial nail on the head with his comments on
hours spent in the garage...Pure relaxation

Years ago after a hard day at work I got into the bad habit of stopping by
the watering hole for a drink or two or three after work to unwind. The
wife kind of put her foot down and I picked up an old Corvette and spent
the next three years redoing (not restoring) it in the garage after
work...an hour here an hour there etc... Well when it was finished I was
not about to sell it so I bought another car and repeated the process...
and still am repeating the process

I have been retired since 1998 and "My" garage has become 2 garages...and
both have been remodeled (enlarged) and now I work on and "play" with my 5
Corvettes and the Chevelle whenever the mood strikes me.
All my cars are now complete and on the street..(none are 100 percent as
usual) and I am looking for another project car (hopefully not my last) to
fill the last available bay in the one garage.

But looking back. Those hours I have spent in the garage sure beat sitting
at a bar, or going bowling etc...and the trips I have taken with those cars
allowed my wife and me to make tons of new friends from almost every
walk of life

I am now thinking of relocating to a State with LOW taxes, warm weather,
cheap utilities etc and buying a small "A" frame home WITH AN ATTACHED 7
CAR GARAGE...

Yep Smiles per mile and 1000's of hours of relaxation... worked for me...

Before even thinking about replacing the starter I would open my wallet and

I have the A/C Delco part number for the spring in the garage if anyone is

All I can say is that I have only ran into 2 individual cars that the
replacing the spring alone
has not cured the problem... COMPLETELY !

My Chevelle and 2 of my Corvettes now have this light weight spring and I
have never had the

Principal is simple spring compresses with a lot less force therefore
it does not require nearly as much "electrical power" ...

16.000
==
Well my "roots" are also in the coal regions of Penna... and
that industry closed up decades ago and my grandmothers home (and the
entire town) of Mt Carmel was purchased then bull dozed by the Federal
Government because of underground mine fires...
My Dad left the area and went to work in the Baltimore Steel mills the
day after he got out of high school
and today is 86, and without Health Insurance because the Bankruptcy
court ruled that Bethlehem no longer had to pay for retires Health
Insurance and his pension was reduced and that too may disapear...

Anyway I am now retired and the only bright spot to the loss of jobs in
the many many small sewing factories that kept this region alive the last
20 years is that the real estate prices in most of those small towns are
kind of depressed... well that statement is extremely understated
...below dirt cheap is a better way of putting it...!

Spent a few days a couple of years ago visiting and got into a
conversation with a few locals about just how low the prices would
go...(like an very nice home selling for $20,000 and taking 6
months to even get that price.)
The bright spot FOR ME...is that I have been looking at moving there in
my retirement...the area is absolutely beautiful, the people are
friendly,  still plenty of deer to be had during deer season... the
farmers are pretty much
used to snowmobiles flying across their back 40  and nobody causes
any damage to anyones property...
NOW if they only had a "little" warmer climate ,,,
lol    BUT If I sell my home for 3-400,000 buy a nice home
in one of those small towns for $20,000 put some of the balance into a
good heating system for the $100,000 garage I could build and
take my wife out every day for breakfast lunch and dinner I could
"subsist" for more then a few years...
Wish I had some answers BUT the only jobs that are available are jobs in
the service sector of the economy and
they pay extremely poorly...not much more then McDonalds...

I forgot to mention that owning a lift will not prevent you from laying
under a car on a parking lot... Been there done that after I called
home and "requested" my wife bring my tools, my truck and a towing
chain...to
me in that darn parking lot... which she did...all in her own good time
(forever !)

Marlon.

Years ago when I was much younger I owned a 2 post lift...
Then I purchased a 4 post lift mainly to use as a storage lift and the 2
post was gone within a year !
and was replaced with another 4 post lift
I am now 60 and honestly getting down on my hands and knees to adjust the
swing arms  to fit the cars frame on the 2 post lift became o a
chore I was avoiding at all costs...because my knees  just could not
take it ... and driving right on a 4 post lift was so easy
A few years later however I did have to purchase a "low level"
lift that only raises the car up maybe 40 inches because I learned that
doing brake work on a 4 post lift is a major pain...and so is rotating
tires
the low raise lift still requires me to get down on my hands and knees
BUT ONLY for doing brake work
or rotating tires...so maybe I will have to do this 2 maybe 3 times a
year...
I can do almost everything else using a 4 post lift .. transmission
removal/installation , shocks, exhaust,
oil changes, you name it...a 4 post lift works fine..(sometimes I will
admit I would like to be able to stand 6 inches to my left or right but
can not because of the 4 posters ramps BUT not that often and the abilit
to just drive on the lift plus use it to double stack parked cars is just
way more important to me the the 5 minutes that I have to stand 6 inches
from my "ideal" location because of the ramps...
2 Post lifts sell for less.. and are lets face it perfect for doing
everything under a car, BOTH are pluses..
some jobs are a compromise using 4 post lifts and some (brakes and tire
rotations) are  too time consuming to do using a 4 post lift... So I
dropped another $1,200 and got a low rise lift for just those
2 jobs...  2 post about 2K 4 post about 3K (very rough figures)
..BUT installing a 4 post lift means just dragging it into the garage and
hooking up the hydraulics and electric..no concrete work.. so for a
retrofit  installation the prices are about equal..for a new garage
the 2 post is cheaper...
I also NEVER used the 2 post lift to just plain clean and polish a
car...man I do that all the time now
with the 4 post lift...no more bending down to wax the rocker panels and
cleaning wheels is darn easy when they are right in your face when you
are standing up and have a cold beer sitting behind the tire on the ramp
of the lift...
Before I retired I can still remember driving home from work and thinking
this baby is due for an oil change, so I pulled into the garage and did
the oil change ... still dressed with a shirt and tie ... Caught the
royal hell from my wife however... lol'
Just my reasons for having a couple of 4 posters...but I did have to go
to extra expense of the low raise
lift  ... because jacking a car up while it is on a 4 post lift
is  not really a big deal but it is slightly
frustrating...

Re: [Chevelle-list] Factory inspection markings

2003-10-21 Thread Bob G

Often in fine print or obscure
"note" areas in the Assembly Manuals you can
find "markings" listed.  The markings made assembly for
the line workers
much easier when grabbing for parts for a particular
car.
I'm not sure I agree with that.
It was my understanding the inspection marks were made to let evryone
know pieces were installed, adjusted, tightened.
Not to identify parts.

I was a member of this group for years but only recently re subscribed
due to my renewed interest (my sons car)
so I may be a little out of the loop...
BUT
Many many years ago while in College I worked at the Chevy
Plant in Baltimore ..(summer  1966 and 1967)
and I worked just about every position on the assembly line...
That said ... I am not really sure what markings everyone is referring
to... BUT 90 percent of the markings That I remember had to do with FINAL
installation that is ...what I installed... NOT what I was supposed
to install.
Sad fact of life BUT the general feeling "on the line" was
..just bolt it on... as fast as you can..and if it fits its right...

BUT if you have 2 seconds left after you installed a part you may have
put on the wrong part... ! BUT then again who cares.and this was on
GOOD days...
I was just a college kid but the regulars were just as bad it not worst
then me...it was a crummy (but well paying job) job that never ended one
bumper after another after another etc... any at least my thoughts were
about the hot date I had that evening...not on building a
"good" car...
I own a 68 myself and from the vin etc I do not think I was working so I
can not bitch about my own work..
BUT my son also owns a 68 and that damn thing was built in the summer and
just about every chance he has he bitches about the dumb SOB who
"threw" that car together...

I think it's around 55 inches or so, but I'm real close to a go/no-go on
this one.

I went out and measured my 68 (which is sitting under one of the
Corvettes) on a Backyard Buddy...

You have a good memory...my 68 sits exactly 55 inches tall... !with
the vette on top I usually do not even bother to raise the lift up to its
maximum...only high enough so I can open the trunk to turn on the Battery ..lol
