Re: [Chevelle-list] Ignition Switch Removal - 65 Chevelle

2009-06-21 Thread Chuck Kranz

 Disconnect the battery.
Use a piece if wire like an unbent paper clip
to press into the hole at the front of the switch.
Insert the key and turn to the Acc. position and a
 little beyond that.
The lock cylinder will come out.
Unscrew the switch retaining ring. The switch can
now be removed from the dash.
Use two screw drivers or any desired method to spread
both retaining clips of the switch's electrical connector
 while unplugging the connector.

 Note:
There should be a mention of reconnecting the battery
in the replacement switch's installation instructions. ;)

[Chevelle-list] VIN numbers where are they?

I had heard that the VIN numbers on the body are stamped on a few

Re: [Chevelle-list] VIN numbers where are they?

I think the sequence number would tell me enough information to try and
get a title or whatever for it. The Fisher Body plate on the firewall
isn't there. Anyone ever try and do this? Where are the hidden CON VINs?
I would like to use this body if it comes up clear. Could I use the Body
Plate from the original rusted body? Does the DMV help you out with a
transfer?

Chuck

The hidden CON VINs don't tell much at all. They are in the format of
(depending on year) year, plant, sequence number - they do NOT include the
series or model. For example a 65 CON VIN might read 5A123456.

The 65 VIN plate is on the A-pillar on the driver's side, not on the dash.
The dash mounting didn't start until 1968 so they could be viewed through
the windshield from the outside. Are you sure you're not talking about the
Fisher Body plate (a.k.a. trim tag or cowl tag) that's mounted on the engine
side of the firewall? That'll tell you body date, plant, body number, trim
and paint codes and for some plants, a few options.

Thanks for all of the good advice. I'll be checking.

Every state is different. Fisher Body plates are not recognized as a legal
means of identifying or registering a vehicle. I don't know of any
locations on a 65 body with a CON VIN but there should be one on the frame
behind the rear axle location on the driver's side top.

If you're putting together one car from two or more, your state will
probably want to issue you a state VIN. Again, check with your DMV for
regulations in your state.

At least that is lessening the possibility that the body mounts are
rusted solid -- if they are falling out on the road. It is a lifetime

thought (that is my glass half-full approach to this...)

I had asked the list about plugs a few months back but got no replies.
So I asked

the guys at my favorite parts store. They came up with Delco R45TS.
I've installed the Dart Iron Eagle Vortec heads on my rebuilt 60 over

They worked good. I have done stuff to the original distributer like a
Mallory E-spark
conversion, mechanical advance kit, MSI cap, rotor, wires, 14 deg vacuum
canister,
and a Blue Streak coil. The parts guy, Bob (he has a 454 Vette) selected
some Platinum plugs

that work even better. They're Delco A41-905's.

it's a 1958 block with a 1980-something HEI distributor, he said well

John- The question is, what year are your heads? Chevy went to the small
peanut plugs in about 1970. I would suggest you buy the plugs appropriate
for your heads and them gap them for the HEI, being about .050.

Devin

John- If your engine is using the smaller plugs, I would suggest a set of
25s. I prefer Autolites, but Champion makes them also. These should fit
your heads and have the appropriate heat range.

Re: [Chevelle-list] spark plugs

2006-07-26 Thread Chuck Kranz

John,
I believe the 932 part of the number is the gap as set by the factory.
There could be a slight mechanical difference.
I trust 454 Vette Bob as he has done a lot of Chevy work. He selected
the plugs based on my Vortec'd 327 description.
The A41 heat range seems to be just right. I'm still using a 35
thousandths gap.

-Chuck K
What the guy sold me is Delco Platinum 41-932. Not sure what the
difference is between that and the 905s, but of course there is a big
diff between a 283 and a 454. I did a search vehicle by part number
on the Delco web site and the ones he sold me came up as fitting 6cyl
8cyl GM applications from something like 260CID up to 350CID. Of
course there is no original application for a 283 w/ HEI so my exact
engine did not come up, but I guess they will be ok.
