Howdy guys (and Larry Z in particular)
In the new issue of Super Chevy, on pages 152-153, there is an article on a 65 Z-16 clone. I thought everyone might want to check it out. This article also leaves me wondering about a couple things. First, were the brackets on the bumper a Z-16 only option, and what are they called, as I'm sure "bumper brackets" is not correct. Second, what's the deal with the rear trim panel? Was that a 396 only option? Looks interesting, almost reminds me of a Roadrunner. Take it easy.

I intend to have my 454 rebuilt this coming winter/spring season and have
never done this before. This will be the motors first rebuild that I know
of and I have a couple questions.

When redoing the cylinders, is it always bored over?
Is this the norm?

Generally, most times the cylinders are overbored to clean up previous damage that could not be removed by honing alone. Other times this is done purely for the increase in displacement.

If so, how much should I expect or consider going over?

I've heard of overbores from .010 to .060, most common, IMO, would be .030.

Will this diminish the value of this completely stock motor?

Only for a purist, although if not necessary, you could be shortening the life of the block. What I mean by this is, if you overbore to, say, .030 now, and something happens that would require a clean-up cut of .040, I would think that would make the block unusable.

If you were having your motor rebuilt, what things would you make sure were
done and please if possible, feel free to get detailed in the
parts/procedure descriptions.

Biggest thing I hear about these days is having the block align bored, cylinders cut and honed utilizing torque plates, studs seem to be a good idea, and some people claim it's a good idea to paint the lifter valley with a quality paint to help oil drain back to the pan. I'm sure there's more though and would guess other list members would fill you in. If nothing else, talk to multiple machine shops.

Any precautions you might take to make sure you get back the same 454 with
all the same parts. (less the ones that will be replaced of course) Maybe I
am paranoid but it seems to me these motors are very valuable and thus a
target for a switch of parts? true?

Make sure to write down the ID numbers from the block, maybe even take pictures if you are that worried. As far as the other parts, sometimes you just gotta trust people.

Thanks for any help and I apologize for my lack of knowledge.

Hope some of this helps. Take it easy.

But how horrible depends on if you have a lead foot. Average, it gets about 7 MPG in the city. On the freeway I wouldnt know, because I never wasted a full tank of gas on the freeway. Darn motor decided to start giving me a knock, and I still dont know what it is, so shes parked for the time being. I would suggest going with a pretty built SB...Lots of power, and halfway decent gas mileage. My dad warned me about the gas mileageI told him Ill learn the hard way. Luckily, ever weekend I work for a family friend, and do chores around here, so it always puts gas in the tank.

I cant give you a knowledgeable answer on the dry gas stuff. But I do know that the gas tank can be removed pretty easily, 2 bolts, 2 wires, and 2 or 3 hoses. Drain the remaining gas and get yourself a sealant kit. The one that I would recommend is called CREEM. I usually pick it up at a motorcycle store. It will seal any debris, and also take care of any minor holes or cracks. Good insurance, as I've spent many hours hunting down problems that were caused by contaminants in the gas. Its really no fun chasing down little particles of crap, especially when you know you could have prevented them. Take it easy.

Re: [Chevelle-List] Advancing Timing

2002-06-08 Thread Drippylimb
Keith,
Just a guess here, but even as low as 1500 RPM, the time it takes for a piston to go from 12 degrees BTDC to TDC has got to be milliseconds. So, if you fire it at say, 6 degrees BTDC, and figure the time it takes for the air/fuel mixture to fully ignite, there's a possibility that the piston may actually be on its way back down the cylinder bore before any power is applied, wasting some of the power stroke. Firing the plug earlier, at 12 degrees BTDC, gives you the time needed to fully ignite the charge while the piston is at or near the very beginning of the power stroke.
Lets do the math. 1500 RPM equals 25 revolutions per second. That's 9000 degrees of travel every second. Assuming that a 350 mouse motor is a 4" stroke, ( I'm not sure ), 12 degrees BTDC equals roughly 1/8". That's 10.8 milliseconds before TDC. And that's at a fast idleimagine 4 or 5 thousand RPMs.
OR, I could be way off base with these figures. I never thought about it before, and its the best answer I could come up with quickly. Take it easy, its nice outside.

[Chevelle-List] funny story

2002-05-24 Thread Drippylimb
Howdy,
So I drive the 65 to work today, call it a test run or whatever. On the way there, I notice the newly installed temp gauge trying to touch the 230 degree mark. I felt that was a bit hot, and since my ride was only about two more miles of highway, I decided to keep going. At lunch, I went out to check the coolant level, seemed fine.
Worried all day about what was wrong, got off work, and drove it home. I'm thinking to myself, wow, the rpm's sound lower now. The temp gauge barely hit 210 degrees all the way home. Guys, I really think I drove the car to work this morning in LOW gear. But I do feel better knowing I don't have a cooling problem. See ya

Mikey,
I used spray cans of Dupli-Color paint on my dash, A-pilliars, etc. But I think that because the paint is thinner than what would be used in a spray gun, the prep work is very important. I wet sanded, primered, wet sanded, sprayed, and cleared all the stuff I painted, and other than a little scratch I put in while installing my dash bezel, it looks very good.

decode his engine and trans numbers. On the head is stamped 3927186
K308

According to my MSA-1 guide 186s were used '68-72 and had either 1.94/1.5
or 2.02/1.6 valves with a 63.3cc chamber. Definitely on the factory
hi-po sheet, but it doesn't help ID the engine as they were used on
302s, 327s, and 350s. Best I can do is say he has a large-journal
engine with 4" bores. ;^) The block casting number (rear of block) and
engine ID code from the small pad just forward of the passenger cylinder
head are needed.

Tom,
I took both the front and back windows out of my 65 with a tool I bought from Murray's. It has an L shaped hook blade that you work in behind the glass and then pull to cut the old sealant. Sometimes it works better to heat the blade with a torch. I was able to remove the back window ( the most expensive ), without any problems. The windshield, however, was a different story, and I got too aggressive and rushed, cracking a corner. I made myself feel better by telling myself it was 37 years old anyway and boy, a new one will sure be nicer to look through. Ya know, if you're going through all the work to paint the car up nice n'all, it may be worth the $110 to get a shiny new windshield anyway. Good luck with whatever you decide..

OK Guys,
This may sound a little strange, but hey, I'm a little strange. I have a 65 Malibu that is still mostly stock. I was toying around with swapping the engine to a small block, but now I have a new idea. I may decide to keep the 6 if I can build it to a semi respectable power level. I'm not looking to drag race, just be able to lay a little rubber down now and again. I've seen a 4 barrel Offenhauser intake in J.C. Whitney, but no headers or anything. Does building a 250 HP 194 C.I.D. engine sound unreasonable to you guys?? I just think it would be cool to pop open the hood and still have the 6 in there, and the car not be a dog is all. I realize i probably just opened myself up to some harassment here, so be gentle. :)

While I realize that this motor really isnt the best choice (cam, compression ratio, etc..),would it be worth the time, effort, and money to use this to replace the 6 cyl currently residing in my engine compartment? woring in the garage with a floor jack, it took about 3 hours to do. Get yourself a nice alignment pin, it will help many times lining up the holes. Is it just me, or were the directions difficult to understand. It would probally have went much smoother if I were just swapping out the lowers and everything else had remained attached.
