[Chevelle-list] trans. or rearend
ok i have a 72 ss chevelle conv. i pulled the smoking 454 ls-5 motor and out it up i replaced with a 350 as well as replaced the 400 with a ready to go 350 tranny and replaced the 373 posi rear with a 331 limted slip ok i burnt the 350 trans. up raising hell and bought a 400 cheap and instaled it now i have a hoamm around 55 to 65 mph after that it goes away so i replaced the tranny because it didn't do it till i changed the trans from 350 to 400 but it still does it with a different tranny although it is a 400 i have replaced driveshafts repeatedly with no effect so im thinking rear end but as i am a body man with only parts replacement mechanical abilaties i have no idea whats causing this maybe some ideas? thanks again CHEVELLES RULE Darin Bailey
Re: [Chevelle-list] Body on rotisserie - support door openings?
i have done chevelles on rotary before and never used a brace with no problems. but i wouldn't go cutting the structor apart on a rotary but foor pans ect. arnt a problem
Re: [Chevelle-list] Tricks or Tips?
just cut a small "x" in the carpet were the bolt will go is what i have allways done.
Re: [Chevelle-list] A little rant
cool
Re: [Chevelle-list] A little rant
funny you should mention this fuel line hose ...this is how i got my first chevelle my wife got a ride home from work and the kid giving her a ride broke down and i helped him get the car in the apt complex.he said he had no idea what was wrong he bought two high voulme fuel pumps and two high tourqe starters and it keept cuttin off well hes said i wish someone would buy it he asked what id give him i told him 200.oo lol he said youll give me that much ..ok after prosses of elimination i looked at the hose from the sender to the metal fuel line and ..dry rot broke out my blade trimed it and drove the car for two years till we moved and couldn't aford the gas to drive it so had to sell it just a plain ol 72 malibu but my first cheverolet and first of many chevelle and 72 came to be my favorite now im lucky enuff to have my 72 ss conv.

TRY WORKING ON CARS FOR A LIVING LOL FOR THAT WAS THE PATH I CHOOSE AND I RUN INTO THIS ALL THE TIME ESPECIALLY WHEN THE COUSTMER SAYS "IT WASENT LIKE THAT BEFORE" HEHEHE
Re: [Chevelle-list] trunk pan 68 chevelle
depends on how bad the rust is , but as a rule i try to leave as much metal as possible and it has to do with what condition you want your car if it will be a driver then i would clean it as best you can (wire brush on a grinder works good) and replace the piece you want then por-15 the whole trunk on top and underneath then you should be good
Re: [Chevelle-list] trunk pan 68 chevelle
YES I HAVE REPLACED THE TRUNK PAN IN A 68 IT IS ABOUT FITTING THE PANS PRIOR TO CUTTING AND WELD SLOWLY AS NOT TO WARP THE METAL BUT I PERSONALLY RECOMEND SOLID WELDING AS OPPOSED TO STITCH OR SPOT LIKE I SAID JUST DONT BE IN A HURRY AND IT WILL PAY OFF IN THE END ALSO MAKE SURE THE METAL IS VERY CLEAN OF RUST PAINT PRIMER BEFORE WELDING Darin Bailey
Re: [Chevelle-list] Barrett Jackson
to me owning a chevelle is a hell of a lot more than money, and by the way im far from being rich . my chevelle has had to sit while i payd bills and raising my kids amongst other crisis in life i was very lucky to find my 72 ss conv. and i only had to pay 1250.00 for it and on paper i am the 2nd owner after i painted it and drove it every day i came to realise that it is a part of me and extension if you will ,i have been offered 25,000 for my car years ago and i admit i thought about it but then i thought all i would do was spend the money and no matter what car i replaced it with i would always miss my orange ss conv. i refused to be one of the manny that years later after the moneys gone say "i wish i haddent sold it" CHEVELLES RULE!!! Darin Bailey
Re: [Chevelle-list] PrepChevelle4Paint
i repeat if you can afford it acid dip im a bodyman of 25 years and have done showcars one 3rd place 67 ss conv in the charlotte tenn. show and if you would use 409gt on your chevelle why would you sand blast just grind all the paint off
Re: [Chevelle-list] PrepChevelle4Paint
YES ACID DIPPING ALTHOUGH MORE EXPENCIVE AND YOU HAVE LIMTED PLACES THAT PREFORM THIS TASK IS THE OPTIMUM WAY TO GO IT GETS EVERYWERE INSIDE THE BRACES AND ALL AS WELL AS THEY HAVE A TANK THAT NUTRLIZES RUST AND EVEN ELTRO PLATED PRIMER SO ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS REPAIR THE MISSING METAL IT LEAVES ALL ORIG METAL IN ITS ORIG STATE WERE SANDBLASTING TAKES SOME METAL AWAY AS WELL AS IF IT IS NOT DONE PROPERLY CAN WARP SHEETMETAL THERE ARE OTHER ALT SUCH AS MEDIA BLASTING (PLASTIC) AND WALNUT SHELL WITCH I WOULD CHOOSE OVER SAND OR GLASS AND AGAIN WITH SAND IT GETS EVERYWERE SO THE PART HAS TO BE BARE SO IF YOU ASRE DOING THE BODY IT HAS TO BE A SHELL OR YOU RUN THE RISK OF SAND GETTING WERE YOU DONT WANT DIPPING IS DEFINATLY THE WAY TO GO IN MY OPINION Darin Bailey
Re: [Chevelle-list] Seen on the road
lo now back in the early 80"s i had a white pinto with a 351w in it it was a definite wheel stander i loved it
Re: [Chevelle-list] Muscle Cars Make Comeback at Detroit Show - NEWCAMARO
well his front seems to be inline more with the real 67/69 camaros the rest of the body is a little rounded but the new has got to get rid of that nose
Re: [Chevelle-list] Bucket Seats
well the story goes most of the time i can try it and mess up and learn and do it agin right cheaper and better than paying someone to do it and im not satisfied with their work or the price
Re: [Chevelle-list] Muscle Cars Make Comeback at Detroit Show - NEW CAMARO
ok now the one in the magizine is a little different than the other two
Re: [Chevelle-list] (no subject)

Re: [Chevelle-list] Rivets for Grill - 66 Chevelle
lol mike i understand your feelings but i was restoring 67/66 chevelles for show and if you had nuts and bolts the judges lafff i personally think chevy could have done it another way but if ya want it to look factory that's the only way i know how and not a bfh a lfh
Re: [Chevelle-list] Rivets for Grill - 66 Chevelle
i have used these rivets use a rag and a hammer and a dolly rag over the part that is to be visible and preferably a body hammer because of the large face if you know someone with a brake lineing re riviter then it may work but short of that this is the only way i know of i did it on the car and it works out good as long as you pay attn to what you are doing
Re: [Chevelle-list] New member, questions
wecome karl, i am a bodyman who has manny restorations under my belt and am the owner of a 72 ss chevelle conv. of 15 years witch i truly love and wouldn't sell for no reason .lol but as to your problem with your roof i am tring something different i bought my son a 73 nova virtually rust free except for the darn roof putting a used roof on will be extreamly time consuming and hard to find/expensive so i am going to try the por-15 method we only have a few small holes and por-15 had a primer, body filler and a patch so unless you have the rear window/ front windsheild gutter problems im gonna give it a try i will coat the outside as well as inside with the treatment as to be sure of it not coming back im going to be putting a showroom paint job on this car so i am putting a lot of faith into this and havent heard as of any one on the list tring this route but would appreciate any feedback form others who have done this roof experament i belive in por15 as i have used it in other applications but not on the vinyil top conversion aspect so ill let ya know how it works and wecome to a great comminity Darin Bailey
Re: [Chevelle-list] What Year is Yours?
ok ok lol mine starts off as my father is a lawyer not a car enthuiest so he bilt a law office in a shopping center with a auto pts store in it back in the early 70"s i was like 7 yrs old so they got tired of me hanging around so they gave me a job makin 50 cets a day (enough for my drinks )but i started learning and by 12 years was sellin parts to you older guys over the counter than in 1980 my parents got divorced and we moved but close to a body shop so i learned that i could play with cars and wash it off in the evning so by the time i was 15 we had found a 69 mach 1 in a junkyard and a 428 scj out of (belive it or not) a 500 gt the car was trashed but motor was good well we had it ready by my 16th bday and needless to say i got it took from me and sold for having too much fun. well i became a very young well experianced and fairly educated bodyman ,i was working in a shop in southrn va restoring cars for a moron and was working on a 67 ss 396 conv.calli car with pwr windows and all the goodies i was talking to the owner (who came by almost every day) and he was so impresed with the care i was taking for his classic shevelle that he told me of a 72 ss chevelle conv.and the price he said he could get it for me for around 5000 it needed restoring but was a one owner and all orig well i had no money with new marriage and kids poping out well all of sudden the owner passed away and left his estate to be handeled by another guy i restored manny of his cars for and he arranged it to were i could get the car for what the owner had in it a measly $1250. lol so i still was broke but the 67 chevelle owner bought it and let me pay him 25 bucks a week helped me get a top on it and i drove it for ten years every day till i got side swiped now finnaly i have a garage in ga and am currenty restoring the car i have loved for years i will never sell it and it will be handed down to my son along with my chopper i have been in tough times and never could bring my self to sell i love my chevelle and in this story it shows that chevelle owners are a different breed Darin Bailey
Re: [Chevelle-list] what year is yours?

Re: [Chevelle-list]Ebay 70 LS6 Convert
yes yes yesss i dont own a 70 ss conv but i do own a 72 ss conv. ls-5 car and i wouldn't sell it for no reason or any amount of money i love it and i do think it is funny the q&a's some folks dont have a clue lol but i agree e-bay is not the place for a car like that hell did everone see the 72 elcamino go for 2500 last week on e-bay ? if i only had the room Darin Bailey
Re: [Chevelle-list] Parts

Re: [Chevelle-list] Cold...
i appreciate my home of georgia after spending 5years in d.c lol
Re: [Chevelle-list] Anyone home?
well i own my 72 ss chevelle conv. ,a 47 ford bus coupe (life long project) 67 harley chopper and a 93 harley lowrider ,but because of non drivin fools all over the road i also have a 95 jetta and a 91 camry...wifes car i wont let her near the chevelle ,but i cant afford to keep putting 1000.00 fenders on my chevelle cause aftermarket sux,and i am lucky to have the toys i have and enjoy driving them im not wealthy but i do have a garage and was lucky enuff to buy my son a 73 nova for us to work on my grandfather was a cmh as well as silver star and 3 purple hearts for his involvement in ww2 and i am so proud to be an american ,i paid veryu little for both of my imports and i drive them like i do my others fast and hard when they die they die and i go get another but that chevelle and the bikes well they have been there and until i die they will be there with my sons i cant afford to have my toys and have a disposable american car or truck so that's how i feel about it and i also rember my grandfather owning a 70 something vw hatchback so it didn't seem to hurt his pride just a car a cheap disposable car ...who cares if it gets hit or scratched or breaks down in some parking lot it is what it is Darin Bailey
Re: [Chevelle-list] Anyone home?
ok ok somebody has got to step and be the expert ..somebody? anybody ? gez maybe all of us together are the experts lol Darin Bailey
Re: [Chevelle-list] 3.73 gear question
on the outside of the housing there are numbers read off those numbers and you can buy a numbers book or i have one and that's how ya tell if it is orig.
Re: [Chevelle-list] Re: Rear Deck Lid Springs
oh are we back to coils again lol some one has got to let me know
Re: [Chevelle-list] Re: Rear Deck Lid Springs
i have always just had to fight them to get them in they cross in the middle after you get them in but it takes a couple of pry bars and some times a buddie to hope they dont fly loose and hit ya in the mouth ,lol, no nothing easy about them sorry Darin Bailey
Re: [Chevelle-list] RearEndQuestion???
when i bought my 72 chevelle conv. i pulled the orig 12 bolt 373 rear and replaced with a 12 bolt 331 limted slip rear so i could drive wile rebiulding orig drivetrain and i have had it in for 5 years now lol and taken trips and drove every day in the summer in the city and country still will get up n fly and dosent hurty my wallet bad on fuel im not really ready to put the orig big block and tranny/rear back rite now lol im happy with that rear set up
Re: [Chevelle-list] signing off
HAVE A GOOD TRIP JHON Darin Bailey
Re: [Chevelle-list] 65 console paint
k-36 or for bad pits k-400 ppg primer works great i suggest shadow coating (light mist of black spray paint ) before sanding to remove all pits, sand all black off
Re: [Chevelle-list] Looking for auto paint sites
im not feeding you crap ,lol,i am a body/paint man of 24 years and have worked with ppg paint mostly ,but now if i had a 55 t-bird i would buy new paint and base/clear it i personally wouldn't do it on a hard to work place like engine compartment,if for some god awfull reason something went the wrong way it would be a whole lot of trouble to get it back to were you are now i was thinking you were doing a budget project and you more than likely wont have any problems ,but a 55 t-bird ? i personally wouldn't skimp i would save it for something else but if that is the paint you put on the car then maybe it is the way you want to go ,i have never had a problem with mixing ppg products they are the easyist to work with and with the best results.and for some reason the hardner reacts more to heat than anything else
Re: [Chevelle-list] Looking for auto paint sites
oh if you break through the orig paint i would spot prime to be safe
Re: [Chevelle-list] Looking for auto paint sites
ok lol ppg will tell you not to do this, but as long as the paint you are going over is really cured well and you dont break through i would do it hell really what do ya got to lose i have sprayed 2020 over lacqur now i gotta say if it is metallic paint you need plenty of time between coats for the solvents to escape or you will get solvent pop(little bubbles looks like fish eyes or pinholes)also it depends on the enviroment you are painting in, if a solid color i have to ask why would you clear it? but as for your orig question if ya got the paint i would use it i have done scarrier things with good results the main thing is the age of the hardner or catalast that does not keep very well and can ruin a can of paint you can test by pouring some clear in a cup and pouring in some hardner then stir virgously for a min or so then let it sit for a bit and see if the clear turns cloudy then it is no good ,if it stays clear then you are ok
Re: [Chevelle-list] Looking for auto paint sites
well im not sure of any sites but i am experianced with ppg esp. and somewhat of dupont if you give me product numbers (ex. dp 401) i may be able to find the product sheets from my suplier and can copy and send or you may be able to take the product numbers your self to a local autoparts/paint supplier and get them your self
Re: [Chevelle-list] 10bolt in Atlanta GA (my old one)
ok were are you at im in ellenwood/decatur area
Re: [Chevelle-list] Bucket seats?
matter of fact i rember a buddie of mine having 66/67 seats in his 70 chevelle so the erlier years may work as well but as replied erlier may not be (correct)
Re: [Chevelle-list] Bucket seats?
im sure they would ,and if you are wondering about later or erlier years i would assune that gm keept their seat with up until they narrowed the body say around 79/80 but they may be close meausure the with and length of what is accesable
Re: [Chevelle-list] Bucket seats?
i had a set of 68 buckets in my chevelle wile i was redoing to orig.so i would assume any from 68 to 72 would work also i havent looked but if you can remove the tracks you can mount any type of seat to them may have to drill some holes in seat frame but better than your floor
Re: [Chevelle-list] Another unknown cable?
i have 5 lol two on the rear panels two under the dash (for floorboard) and the console now i own a 72 conv.so it may exclude the two in the rear armrest but i have seen the others in most hd top cars but most dont work and are shoved up were they dont even know they are there but it may be an option im not sure
Re: [Chevelle-list] Another unknown cable?

Re: [Chevelle-list] Good enough for POR15?
pk let me ask i bought my son a 72 nova it is in great shape other than the roof (from the old vynil top) we want to paint the top i was wondering if anyone used the por-15 on heavy rust what cannot be grinded out and replacing the top is out of the question ,i thought of por-15 then a new vynl top but with the color we ant to use it wouldn't look right ,so i was wandering if you can por 15 iot then maybe epoxy prime it then fill the rust crators then prime and paint or will it just bubble back up after a year or so
Re: [Chevelle-list] 2 questions

Re: [Chevelle-list] Gas Tank
maybe a vega tank may fit
Re: [Chevelle-list] 69 posi
the rear will fit for a 72 from 69
Re: [Chevelle-list] help
this cat sounds retarded and should not be giving advice ,i would check the scoket were the bulb goes into the park lamp and start troubleshooting there with a good old test light (you also might want to check into a pos/neg test light so u can check both ) then go from there .as far as your throttle cable make sure the jacket or sleeve the cable slides through is not movin and is secure, then check brackets/and floor clearance as mentioned before,im even scared to as a auto zone representative to even look up a part lol
Re: [Chevelle-list] 462 HEADS
how much would it cost to ship for i am interested and sounds like i could afford them if the shipping is reasonable thank you and my son thanks you they ar for our project nova i just bought for him
Re: [Chevelle-list] 462 HEADS

Re: [Chevelle-list] Pure Agony!
put some laquer thinner in a paint gun and turn the pattern knob all the way in to spray "bullet" then you have a pressure washer with thinner wash it away
Re: [Chevelle-list] Parts
were are ya at matt
Re: [Chevelle-list] Trailering Your Chevelle
i recently moved three different times within a year i had to trailer my chevelle cause of blown head gasket i used the u-haul with the tire straps i travled from dc to carolinia then to ga were i am finally home ,but only had once about 20 miles from were i left were i had to tighten them up and i stoped and checked manny times i also see a lot of rollback drivers using them to tie down cars so im sure they make a set of those to work with a trailer after my trip i belive in them
Re: [Chevelle-list] Remove name from list
i love it funnier than hell
Re: [Chevelle-list] what paint for rear end?
the only problem with epoxy primer (witch i truly belive in ) is it chalks out after a year or more but if you coat it afterwards with a good hardened semi gloss paint it will hold up forever i did this to my control arms five or six years ago and it is like new still on a practically daily driver
Re: [Chevelle-list] Posi
how old are you lol ,a posi unproperly used can ruin a car
Re: [Chevelle-list] Rims
i have 15 inch rallys on my chevelle 7's in the front and 8's in the bac i run 225 70 on front anf 255 70 on rear they fill the wheel house up and with air shocks down give it kinda a tubed out look
Re: [Chevelle-list] starter hits the flexplate

Re: [Chevelle-list] Jegs, Summit, or ? [Re-Send]
HEADMAN I THINK ARE THE CHEAPEST HEADERS IF YOU WANT QUALTY I WOULD GO HOOKER YOU CAN ALSO ORDER THEM FROM ADVANCE/AUTOZONE BUT I WOULD GO TO THE WEB SITE AND GET YOUR OWN PART NUMBER,I HAVE A 72 ORIG BB CAR AND IM RUNNING A SB FOR EXPENCE REASONS BUT I HAVE AIR AND WANTED TO KEEP IT, IT MOUNTS TO EXAUST MANIFOLD AND HOOKER HOOKED ME RITE UP
Re: [Chevelle-list] Linkage Problem!
i have had problems with my wiper motor as well i have replaced it twice and i think they are just not a good design in motor (laffin) but if you hear of a majic soultion let me know as far as the tranny ,i used to put spacers in the linkage to tighten everthing up to cause less movement ,but have been a auto man for years

Re: [Chevelle-list] son of a...
i dont know how ya feel about stores like advance or auto zone but i think they do
Re: [Chevelle-list] son of a...
try the local places online
Re: [Chevelle-list] More paint (off topic)
man see it gitts touchy here you might be able to water sand but gm does not put much paint on their cars so you probally wont be ablr to git it all out and if there are no imperfections in the pain you mey be able to clearcoat but its hard to say with out seeing it ,but if you go through the clear watersanding you must rebase that panel.
Re: [Chevelle-list] GM Cars
tom thank you but u how much lol im comin from ga
Re: [Chevelle-list] Paint
Ron ,as a bodyman of 25 years i would say you should look a little higher for a nice paint job ,if you only want something to only last five years or so then 2k will probally deliver.but check out the shops work and u probbaly want to stay away from the big high production shops ...good luck, and ussally the older the painter the more he knows .and you mite wanna concider dissassbly your self ,
Re: [Chevelle-list] Trailered vs. Non-Trailered Cars at shows
hell yea i was gitting gas at a store one day and a man came up to me and said beautifull car restoring it i said nope im driving it .i have restoed manny chevelles one i am very proud of was a al orig 67 ss 396/375 car w/power windows and it was calli car with the smog airclnr .and i pulled 993 points in charlotte, tenn five or so years ago ,but it was a trailer car hell he very rarely ever drove it one day i asked him"whats the point"? he laffed and sold it a month later and bought one he could fell better about driving ,but i suppose if your goal with the car is to copetitivly show then you must trailer (not my choice) but that would be the only way of succession in that class but i trailer my car only on the move back to ga ,ive been runn off the road by a woman droppin her cig in a curve ,but i repaired it and with my son .so it gave us time together as well so i recon some must trailer,if that's your goal.

Re: [Chevelle-list] new Dodge Charger
well as a rider of 17 years i agree but i suppose what im saying is we already own the cars and the bikes why create a money pit of having another car to drive when we have as good as it gits in the garage
Re: [Chevelle-list] new thread "V6 ponderings"
u no
Re: [Chevelle-list] new Dodge Charger
yea but ridiny my harly is a hell of a lot cooler and more fun and that allows to drive the chevelle on cooler days making the hour or so drive in atlanta traffic no so bad
Re: [Chevelle-list] new Dodge Charger
ok (laffin) my jetta i bought for 1000 bucks it was cheap trans.and book was 4000 so it was a deal but let me ask ya are you prepared to pay repair bills on a vw they are expensive even if you fix it yourself i live in atlanta were parts should not be hard to git but for a jetta it took a week for me to git a p/s pump and it was hooked to the water pump so i was with out it for a week.so my chevelle? uhhh for a small block parts are plentiful and affordable hell the fun it is to drive plus dependability i dont see were i can go wrong ,your desil will only git that fuel econmy if it is in perfect tune and that calls for part replacement quicker than u would think my chevelle will git ablot 20 or so mpg as long as i can stay outta the fours lol but no matter what decision i make i doubt i will buy another vw or european car
Re: [Chevelle-list] new Dodge Charger
for what and speedo dash?
Re: [Chevelle-list] Jim Dos Camaro RS/SS
well i have owned camaros matter of fact a 68 ss/rs camaro 396 4 spd car but as far as a ride the chevelle rides better than any car i have ever driven and handling as well
Re: [Chevelle-list] new Dodge Charger
well i have seriously been thinking insead of buying a new car selling my jetta and putting the money in my 72 ss conv.i pulled the big block for now and replaced w/small block for financal reasons it is the most dependable car i have ever owned and with a quadrajet the gas milage isnt too bad ,i can work on it without a computer and its more fun than a new vette and not to mention the smiles it gits on the road
