[Chevelle-list] Off Topic (TSB)
Does anyone on the list have access to full "Technical Service Bulletins"? If someone does, could they email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] I would GREATLY appreciate it. Thanks Ryan
[Chevelle-list] Sorry for the mistake
I didnt mean to send a copy of my daughters benefit poster to the list. I accidently clicked on the wrong email address and I just realized it. Sorry for the mistake! Ryan
[Chevelle-list] Quick Update
Just an update for you guys. We were finally able to bring my daughter home tonight from the Hospital. We spent 8 days there and that was long enough. She has really responded to her treatments. They think that they have the luekemia stopped from making any more new cells. Now it is just a matter of stopping the cells that are already doing the damage. I wanted to thank all of you for your thoughts and prayers. Reading the emails in the hospital really helped to lighting our spirits. If any one is interested, my cousin set up a website for Emma (my daughter) and it has been wonderful for us to log onto and read what everybody has said. We also get it updated as often as there is any new news. Here is the websitehttp://www.caringbridge.org/visit/emmalangstraat check it out if ya want. Thank you for ALL the thoughts, prayers, and emails. They have meant the world! Ryan Langstraat
[Chevelle-list] With a heavy heart
This is way off topic but I consider you guys my friends. We found out around Christmas time that my daughter who is 22 months old, has Luekemia. We are at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City Iowa with has a wonderful cancer center so she is in good hands but our first daughter died of systic kydney failer so this is especially scary for my family. I ask for your thoughts and prayers in the coming days Thank you Ryan Langstraat 1968 Malibu
Re: [Chevelle-list] Garage Heater
Jerry I too live in Iowa and yes you are right. It is a cold winter this year. Atleast we had a white christmas this time but now I am ready for spring. As far a garage heaters go, I install alot of Reznor heaters in shops, garages, warehouses etc they are fairly inexpensive to install and you can get a bunch of different btuh sizes. Menards carries there own brand of "Reznors". I have never put one of theirs in but I dont see any reason that they wouldnt work ok. Menards also carries a smaller "ventless" style heater that will heat up to something like 500 sq feet. They do work good but if you let them run along time, you will start to notice a smell. Both of those models can be ran on LP. You just have to be sure you get the right one. I personally install Reznor brand heaters that I get from Plumb Supply (wholesale) but I believe that Grainger or Dennison also sells them. If you need any help let me know and stay warm!!! Ryan (aka aslo cold in Iowa)
Re: [Chevelle-list] Couple Three Questions
Jim and Dale, Thank you for you help with the questions. I did look at the website that Dale said and it seems to agree with your measurements Jim. Thank you both for your time and effort. You saved me about a 75 min trip to "verify". Thanks again Ryan
[Chevelle-list] Couple Three Questions
My car is currently out of town so I cant just run to the garage and look so I have to look elsewhere. I have been looking online and in my books and havent come across any info so here goes.. I looked at Dales web pages but didnt see what I was looking for. I'm sure its there somewhere but I was just looking in the wrong spot. I am looking for the distance between the body mount holes under the fire wall on a 68 malibu. Also, how wide is the 68 at its widest point? I know the doors are kinda rounded so I have to take that into consideration. How much does just the body (no front clip) weigh roughly? I know someone out there has this info in front of them so any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you Ryan
[Chevelle-list] Rotisserie
I am currently about half way done with building my rotisserie. I am using the basic idea of this web page http://www.harwoodperformance.bizland.com/1941buick/Editorial_20.htm with a few of my own ideas thrown in. I was wondering if you guys had any pictures of the ones you used or any of your own ideas that really worked good. I am happy with my current design but I am always willing to improve on them! Thanks Ryan
Re: [Chevelle-list] O/T heater/furnaces
Harlan, I can get the tube heaters you are looking for. I am not sure about the prices though. I noticed someone had mentioned northern tool. I dont know about the difference in quality but if you dont live any where near Iowa, it might be easier for Northern to just ship them to your door. If you do want me to look into them let me know. Ryan
[Chevelle-list] Way off topic
I have noticed that a few of you guys also have Mopar cars. If someone would be willing to give me some info off the list regarding a roadrunner I would appreciate it. Email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Ryan
[Chevelle-list] Chassis pics
I had a couple of emails come back to me undeliverable. So...if you asked for pics of the finished chassis but hadnt gotten them yet email me ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) your email address and I will send them to you again. Thanks Ryan
[Chevelle-list] Rolling Chassis
the weather is supposed to be really nice this weekend so I will ROLL the chassis (man that is nice to be able to say finally!!) out side and snap a few pics. If anybody is interested in pictures I can send them to their email address unless If nobody cares I can send a blanket email to the listAgain, I couldnt have done it without all the great help on this list. I know some of my questions seemed foolish at times but by god we are getting it done! thanks for all the patience and help over the last x amount of years. Ryan
Re: [Chevelle-list] Another rear end question from the rookie
I do own a TON of books regarding the restoration of Chevelles. While I am in the middle of a certain project I tend to look at all of them to try to get different angles, ideas and viewponts. That is the only book that I found the spring clamps in. That is what triggered the question. I have noticed a few things that are wrong in the book myself and I dont pretend to know half the stuff you guys do. On a side note, I now have a completed rolling chassis!! Every square inch of it is either new, rebuilt or redone (Expensive!) Not too bad for a first timer. All my friends said I was nuts for making a frame off my first attempt but no guts no glory right? thanks for all your help Ryan
Re: [Chevelle-list] Another rear end question from the rookie
Devin My chevelle is a 1968. If you or others want I can scan a picture of the page out of my book that has it in it. The name of the book is "Chevelle SS Restoration Guide" by Motorbooks. It doesnt state any where that the "clamp" isnt used in 67-72's. It is just labled "Chevelle Rear End Suspension. Interesting. Ryan
[Chevelle-list] Another rear end question from the rookie
I was looking through all my diagrams of the 12 bolt. I noticed that one of the drawings showed a "clamp" that holds the rear coil spring down onto the rear axle spring pertch. I was wondering if this was something that is normally on our chevelles? All I know is that my car did not have them installed on it when I tore it apart but I guess that doesnt really mean anything. This is the first I had seen of them and was wanting to put it back together right. Couldnt do it without you guys!!! thanks Ryan
[Chevelle-list] 12 Bolt Install
I will be installing my freshly rebuilt 12 bolt this weekend in the chevelle! I was wondering if you guys had any tips, tricks, ideas or suggestions for me before I dive in head first?!? I know it is fairly straight forward but having a few tricks up my sleeve never hurts! Thank you for your time. Ryan
Re: [Chevelle-list] BBC frame stands
Herb... I dont have the picture that you are looking for but I was in the middle of that thread. If memory serves (not always reliable) it seems as if the small block stands are 2" tall and the big block stands are 1 5/8" tall. Hope this helps with what you are looking for. Ryan
Re: [Chevelle-list] 12 Bolt yoke
Well, here we go again.. I just recieved my pinion yoke from Summit. It does have the u bolts in it. Not the straps. I was begining to belive after reading everyones emails that MOST 12 bolts had the strap style. I went back through Jegs and Summits website just to make sure I wasnt going nuts. I called Summit and was told that both the 1310 and the 1350 use u bolts, just a different size u joint. Just like Keith Anderson mentioned. Is any body else as confused as I am? I just hope I dont end up getting screwed when it comes time to hook up the driveshaft!! Although in Ryan's world it is guaranteed to be wrong. Wouldnt have it any other way would we Ryan
Re: [Chevelle-list] 12 Bolt yoke & #spd Vs 4 Spd
Jim If you would like or need send me the casting numbers off your tranny and I can tell you what it was used for. I have book that is actually really good with stuff like that.Just an offer Ryan
Re: [Chevelle-list] 12 Bolt yoke
I sure opened a can of worms with the whole 12 bolt yoke thing didnt I? Well, I have already learned a few things about 12 bolt yokes. The reason I asked what people where running was that I really was under the impression that you could use either kind. I talked to a guy at Jegs (I had to of missunderstood him) and I thought he said that the 1350 yokes where the u-bolt style and were used only in really high performance cars. Mine is just going to be a cruizer so I asked about the 1310 yoke. He said that most cars ran the 1310 and that it was a bolt and strap style. So.I looked on Jegs website and Summits and from what I gathered (obviously not true) that all 12 bolts ran the same style pinion yokes. The reason I was thinking this is that niether site asks what year of car it is for. I looked under 12 bolt chevy passenger on both sites and only the 1310 and the 1350 where offered which led me to believe you had the choice based on what your car was meant for. Now...long story short I am afraid that I may have made things worse for myself. I ordered 1310 Moser yoke from summit thinking that I really didnt need the really high performance part (1350). I guess I wil find out when it gets here. My car is a 1968 Chevelle two door. It originally came with 307 but I am replacing it with 402. It kind of sounds like Jim Sullivan and I are doing the same thing. I am looking for a M20 (suggested by many members of this list) but just to allow me to get it on the road eventually I have a rebuilt 4 speed saginaw sitting in it. Like I said I am building a car I can take the fam in to go get ice cream on saturday nights. I am not looking for a car to burn up the 1/4 mile. I got the saginaw on trade for some work that I did on a guys garage. So far I havent been that lucky to land a muncie in trade!! I have the original drive shaft from the 307 ci with a 10 bolt rear. If I am understanding things right I wont be able to use that drive shaft with my 12 bolt and a four speed. Correct me if I am wrong but it wouldnt surprise me. Maybe Jim Sullivan and I can both get our projects figured out with this thread!! With all that being said sorry to be so long winded. I just know that all the good people on this list havent steered me wrong yet Thank you for all the help all these times Ryan
[Chevelle-list] 12 Bolt yoke
Are most of you guys running a u bolt or strap style pinion yoke? I guess I am not sure what 12 bolt Chevelles came with? Mine didnt have one on it when I bought the housing and I guess I dont know. I see a few on ebay that use the straps for the u joints. Are all of them that way? Chaulk this one up the rookie syndrome. Again. Thank you Ryan
[Chevelle-list] I need some help
I am looking around at prices for pinion yokes. They seem to be running around the $100 mark. My question being, I went to OPGI.com and they list a yoke (part number CH26623) that fits 65-70 Chevelle 12 bolt. ($50) Then they require you to buy the hardware kit (part number CH26764). ($5) My question is why is this one so cheap? I know it is just steel but I really dont need a chrome one. Any thoughts out there? Anybody have one they want to sell? Thank you in advance for all your help Ryan
[Chevelle-list] Pinion Yoke
I was wondering if anybody has a pinion yoke for a 12 bolt that they would be willing to part with? That is the last part I need to complete my 12 bolt rearend rebuild. Let me know if anybody can help me out. Email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and we can work something out. Thanks for all the help Ryan
Re: [Chevelle-list] 12 Bolt Lubrication
Dale, Right after I sent the email to the list I found what I had been looking for. You are right it takes four and not two. Thank you however for the response, I sure do appreciate it. Ryan
[Chevelle-list] 12 Bolt Lubrication
When I finally get my 12 bolt put back together how much fluid does it hold? I know I need to ad a posi additive but I was thinking something like 2 quarts plus posi additive. Does this sound right? I want to make sure I get enough while I am at it. Thanks Ryan
[Chevelle-list] C clips
Sorry I took me so long to respond I was out of town. Thanks to everyone that helped find the c clips on ebay. I hadnt had much time to track some down yet so this helps a lot Thank you Ryan
Re: [Chevelle-list] Ancient History
Jim My line of work is heating and air conditioning so if you have any questions regarding hanging your reznor I would be more than glad to give you ideas and suggestions. Seems like on this list I am always asking questions so being able to maybe answer one or two might help offset all the rookie questions. Most Reznors and like furnaces have 3/8" threaded "nuts" built into the top of the units that you thread allthread into and tighten down with 3/8" nuts and a back up nut. What are you hanging it by? Is is going to hang in wooden rafters or is going to hang from metal trusses? Anyway, let me know what you decide and if you have any questions. One suggestion is to make sure you get one that is big enough to do what you want. Otherwise it will run all the time and you wont be happy with its performance. If you are looking at getting a new Reznor here is a link. If not ignore it. http://www.reznoronline.com/ Hope I can help. Also...where are you located? In the off chance you are close to eastern Iowa I could get you my discount on a new one. Let me know
Re: [Chevelle-list] C Clips
Devin I dont have a c clip to measure. I bought the car with a 12 bolt housing with just axles. I am putting together all the rest of the pieces. I talked witht the shop that is going to set up the rear end for me and he thought he had some laying around but couldnt find them right now so.He said he would call me when he finds them. Hopefully he will and that would solve that little problem. Now...its time for another rookie question from Ryan. When you say "measure the c clips" are you talking about axle diameter? Thanks Ryan
[Chevelle-list] C Clips
I was wondering where you guys have found that sell C Clips for 12 Bolt axles? I looked around online because I know I found them somewhere but cant seem to find them again. Any help would be appreciated. Ryan
Re: [Chevelle-list] Figured it out
Well...once again you guys where right. I was at O'Reilly's and between you and me the store in my town only hires "the very best" The very best at what I havent figured out yet. Obviously not cars. Both O'Reillys and Auto Zone here in town are a joke. Last night I went to Auto Zone to get some more bearings and I had to show the guy behind the count how to run the computer. I was looking for bearings for the rear axle for my 68 chevelle. He went to the shelf and pulled the part out of the box and said "there you go!" I just so happend to have the old ones in my pocket (I have learned to take the old stuff I know is right with me) and compared the two. Not even close. I looked back at the computer screen and he had selected a 1986 Ford F150. Call me crazy but I think a blind, one legged horse could have done a better job of typing in what I wanted. So...I went to my buddy in Iowa City that is the manager of O'Reillys there. He knows what he is talking about and we had it figured out in no time. I came home put everything together and it looks so sweet. I know some (ok...all) of my questions seem dumb but it just seems like everything I try to do on the car fights me all the way. When I exhaust all of my own ideas I know that the knowledge on the list can set me straight. Thanks for all the help and for making me feel totally stupid!! Ryan I have the front end on tires for the first time tonight!!
[Chevelle-list] Figured it out
My new rotors are 3/8" shorter than the old ones. The guy at the parts store assures me I have the right rotors for the car. My next question being do I take the rotors back and try to figure out what ones I really need or is there something simple I can do to make these work. I already have the seals and bearings in and packed with grease so I am not wild about starting over. Ideas? Ryan
Re: [Chevelle-list] Front wheel bearings
Herb I did put new races in the rotors. I checked the inner and outer bearing against the old ones, I checked the new races vs. the old ones, I checked the new rotors and hubs vs. the old ones and everything is the same size inside and out. The only difference is that the new spindle washer is just a tad thinner than the old one but that doesnt keep it from bottoming out any sooner... I had to walk away from it last night, regained my focus and am going to do some investigating tonight. I know it has to be something dumb but I just couldnt see it last night. Ryan
Re: [Chevelle-list] Front wheel bearings
Thanks for the responses...I did figure out that for some reason the nut is bottoming out on the threads before the washer is pushed tight against the outer bearing. So needless to say, the rotor is WAY too loose even with the spindle nut as tight as you can get it. I am not sure why I guess, I have the exact same bearings that I took off of the old rotors. Any suggestions as to spacing so that the nut actually comes in contact with the washer and the bearing before bottoming out on the end of the threads? Anybody ever had this problem? As always, something always goes wrong! Thanks for the help Ryan
[Chevelle-list] Front wheel bearings
I just got "done" installing the new front wheel bearings and after tightning everything down I can still move the rotor from side to side...is this normal? I dont have the calipers mounted yet so that may make a difference but it sure seems like it move a lot more than it should. Is this normal or am I maybe missing something? My rebuild manual says: "With a drum brake adjusted for no drag or a disc brake with the caliper removed, it's normal to have a slight amount of play detectable in the bearing. " Mine just seems excessive Thanks Ryan
[Chevelle-list] Front Wheel bearing Torque
I am finally getting around to putting the front rotors and hubs on the 68. After reading my overhaul manual it says to torque the spindle nut to 12lbs. I know they normally dont have a lot of torque on them but it seemed low to me. Just wanted to run it by you guys to make sure. Thanks! Ryan
[Chevelle-list] Rear Sway bar
I dont remember who it was a couple months ago that told me they where looking for a rear sway bar and to let them know if I found any. Well here is the page on ebay that has two for sale. hope it helps. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280057109291&ssPageName=MERC_VI_RSCC_Pr4_PcY_BIN_Stores_IT&refitem=280056881337&itemcount=4&refwidgetloc=active_view_item&usedrule1=StoreCatToStoreCat&refwidgettype=cross_promot_widget Ryan
[Chevelle-list] Rebuilding Carrier/Differential
I was wondering if any of you know where I can get a rebuild kit for the carrier itself. I need to replace the guts in mine but am not having much luck with finding parts on line. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks Ryan PS - I promise eventually I will run out of questions!!!
Re: [Chevelle-list] Carrier rebuild
John, Thank you for the reply and I really like your 70 chevelle. I think I have finally made up my mind to go with the 3.31's. I would trade a really hard launch for being able to drive it down the interstate to work and the combination sounds really good. Thanks again Ryan
[Chevelle-list] Carrier rebuild
Have any of you guys rebuilt your 12 bolt carriers? What kit did you buy and where did you buy it? Are you happy with the kit? I've seen a couple kit that replace the clutches and that is about it. Shouldnt more of the guts be replaced while you have it apart? Any help would be appreciated. Also...anybody out there running 3.55 ring and pinion in the rearend? I think that is the set that I am going to buy but wanted some feed back on them. A buddy has 3.73 and it winds out on the interstate. I know tire size, tranny, etc... all make a difference but just wanted some quick ideas. Thanks Ryan
[Chevelle-list] Rear Parking Brake Cables
I am getting ready to reassemble my rear drum brakes. What I was wondering is can you put all the brakes together and mount them on the backing plates and then add the rear parking cable later or does it have to be put put in before all the rest of the brakes because they mount behind everything? Anythoughts? Thanks for the help. Ryan PS. I finally got my big block coil springs in the other night. Needless to say I would NOT recommend doing that with a coil spring compressor and a bare frame with no motor, laying on your back. NOT FUN.
Re: [Chevelle-list] Coil Springs
Carl Here is the kicker...I am using a coil spring compresser. I just dont think I have my order of operations in the correct order. Like I said...this is such a dumb problem but it has got the best of me for the last few hours. Ryan
[Chevelle-list] Coil Springs
I need you guys to bail me out once again I took my front coil springs out last fall with no problem. However, trying to put the new ones back in is prooving to be a bigger task than I thought. I have read how other people on the new claim to have done it but they just dont seem to be working for me. How have you guys done it? The motor is out and I am putting in big block springs. Are there any tips or tricks out there you guys can share with me? I'll take anything at this point. It seems like suck a dumb thing to have a problem with but that is just how things work in my garage. Thanks again Ryan
[Chevelle-list] Coil Spring Isolators
I was just wondering if you guys put isolators on all four coil springs or just the rear? I have seen sets of eight and four for sale. When I dissasembled my car, it only had isolators on the rear. Is this correct? Is there any known issues for not putting them in the front also? Thanks for the help and happy holidays to you and yours. Ryan

Re: [Chevelle-list] rear carrier question
Jim... Here is a couple links that I have found useful. I looked real quick but didnt see the part number out listed but you can check them out anyway. This arent Chevelle specific but the stamping on the carrier seems to hold true throught GM rear ends. Hope this helps. http://www.novaresource.org/axle.htm http://www.nastyz28.com/2gcog/rearaxle.html Ryan
Re: [Chevelle-list] Power steering box 68SS
Thanks Tom! That is a relief knowing that I can get it put back together without trial and error. Thanks for the help Ryan
Re: [Chevelle-list] Power steering box 68SS
I will add a question on to steve's email I too went to a fast ratio steering box and I didnt mark the old unit in relation to the pitman arm. Is there any sure fire way to get the teeth meshed together where they should be? AKA getting the pitman arm in the right position on the steering gear shaft? Did I royally screw myself by not marking it? Thanks Ryan
[Chevelle-list] Coupon Code
Anybody have a coupon code for "The Paddock"? Just trying to save some coin! Thanks Ryan
[Chevelle-list] Roof Rail Drip Molding for 1973 camaro
I was wondering if any of you guys that sell parts could get your hands on a set of roof rail drip moldings for a 1973 Camaro. A buddy of mine is almost completely done with his restoration but cannot find both sides of the drip molding. It seems that you can find one side but not the other. If I remember right it is the driver side that he cant find. I have looked around myself but still no luck. If any of you guys have an idea or can get some please let me know. Thanks! PS... Karl Groves is a brave soul for setting up a web cam for all to witness the setting up of his rotisserie. Good luck Karl! I will check in to see how things go for you. One thing is for sure it cant go any worse than it would for me so chin up!! Ryan
Re: [Chevelle-list] Lower Ball Joints
Jim and Leo... Thank you both for taking the time to help me out. Leo...sorry I didnt realize the link you sent me the other day was the reamer I needed. Duh. Jim... It sounds like your ball joints are the same size as mine so maybe the best answer here is what Leo has been telling me all alongget the taper reamer and use the bigger ball joints that I have already pressed into my control arms. HOPEFULLY this will work just fine and get the front end on the ground finally!!! I sure do appreciate all the help. I have been really frustrated with this thinking I was just doing something wrong somewhere. Ryan
Re: [Chevelle-list] Lower Ball Joints
Jim... I do believe they are the same size as your 69 but maybe someone on the list can clarify that would know for sure..thanks Leo That web site that you gave me...would you happen to know off hand what size of reamer I would need? Thanks for all the help guys! Once I finally get these dumb spindles on, I can finish up the front end and get it put on the new rims and tires instead of the jack stand it has been on for what seems like an eternity!! Thanks again Ryan
[Chevelle-list] Lower Ball Joints
I was wondering if any of you would be able/willing to go measure the shaft on your front lower ball joints (mine are 1968) and tell me the diameter at the top and bottom. My new ball joints and old ball joints are not the same diameter. Someone had mentioned earlier about getting the right box but not having the right ball joint inside the box. I am beginning to think they where on to something. My old ones measure .790 at the bottom and .636 at top. The new ball joints measure .783 at the bottom and .690 at the top. The old one has 5651 stamped on the bottom and the new one has 9642 on the bottom (they are both Moog). Anyone willing to help me out again? Thanks! Ryan
Re: [Chevelle-list] Spindle
Leo That was such an obvious idea that it never crossed my mind. I will check the old ball joints in the spindles tonight. Thanks for the wake up call. Sometimes it just takes someone not staring right at the problem to solve it. I'll let you know what I find. Thanks for the help Ryan
Re: [Chevelle-list] Spindle
I stuffed foam into all the ball joint/tierod end openings on the spindle before I had them powdercoated and taped the threads on the spindle. I have tried to put the control arms onto the spindle with out having to fumble with the springs but I just cannot get the spindle down on the lower (the upper fits fine) ball joint. I have checked that I have the right lower ball joint, and even took my die grinder (gently) into the taper in the spindle thinking maybe I just had a burr or something. Still no go. I can get the castle nut down far enough the that top of the cotter hole is just barly visible but not enough to get the cotter pin in. Guess I will just have to keep working at it. The upper ball joints slide right through nicely so I am not sure what happened. Anyway, thanks for all the responsesYou guys are great Ryan
Re: [Chevelle-list] Spindle
I too am doing a frame off resto... I checked with the auto store today and they verified that I had the right lower ball joint (original spindle going onto new MOOG lower and upper ball joints). I know have some good ideas to try tonight. I found myself the other night with a hammer in my hand thinking about convincing my newly powdercoated spindle on to my newly powdercoated control arms that are attached to my newly powdercoated frame. Needless to say I had to walk away. Thats when I sent the email. I will try tonight to get them back on. I have done coil springs before but for some reason these are fighting me. Ryan Havinvg malibu spindles and putting BB coil springs wouldnt have anything to do with it would it? I have always thought they where the same spindles for BB and SB cars. Maybe not Thanks again
Re: [Chevelle-list] Spindle
Jim I couldnt even get the nut on far enough to get the cotter pin in before the nut was bottomed out. I havent had a chance to fight with it yet so I am still working on the solution. Ryan
[Chevelle-list] Spindle
I was just trying to replace my front coil springs but ran into a snag when I couldnt get the new lower ball joint stud to slide all the way through the hole in the spindle. I recall having to use a ball joint seperator to get them apart the first time. Is there a trick to getting it all the way down on the stud so I can get the castle nut seated enough to get the pin back in? Thanks for the help Ryan
