I just recently changed the fuel pump on my 67 327 and tried the bolt trick.
Even using a longer bolt that I could physically feel in the push rod hole, the
bolt never contacted the push rod; the rod ran underneath the bolt.  Wound up
having to remove the plate, grease up the rod with some bearing grease to help
keep it against the camshaft.  I remember it working in the past but didn’t on
this engine.  ???

Yes pull the short bolt and stick longer bolt which will hold the fuel pump

Interesting  but I can remember several low budget 57 with 265s also. I had
tons of Tri 5 cars when I was a kid . Also saw many 57 with 55-56 distributors
which did not have the window to adjust the points. I think they used parts
until they ran out.

Brad may be on to it.  The 55 & 56 Chevy 265 and the 57 283 used the single
letter "F" in the suffix code.  The same Corvette used FG for the
Powerglide.  The oil fill tube you mention was used up through 1968 so
that's not an issue.  The 55 did not have an integral oil filter, i.e., no
canister on the driver side rear of the block.  There was an optional oil
filter system but it was an add-on the sat on top of the engine.

Looking into more resources the early engine codes were as yours appears.

0552582 is the sequence number of the engine (although my source says this
should only be 6 digits
F is for Flint engine plant
56 is the model year
F is the engine code and in 1956 it's a 170hp Powerglide passenger.  Again,
Corvette used a 2-letter code and did not use a 2-bbl intake.

I'd really be interested in seeing a readable photo of it.

IIRC the single-letter suffix was in use up until the early 1960s.  Does
the engine have an oil filter?  According to nastyz28.com "F" could be a
1955 265 or 1957 283 and the early 265s didn't come with one.  I don't
recognize the format of the rest of the number.

Harlan:

I had a 56 Chevy sedan delivery with a factory 265. It too had no filter.
Unfortunately this was when I was 16 years old and didn't know boo about ID
numbers etc.I do know it was the original motor I'm guessing mine must of been
an early 1956 production  and they used the non filtered blocks until they
either got all used up or they used them in the cheaper cars?

Maybe yours is a replacement block? I do not believe that it was possible to
"add" a filter to the area in question.I can tell you when I went to change the
oil I searched all over for an oil filter.Mine didnt have one but the add on
filter was on top of the manifold . it was helf in place under the thermostat
housing and the metal lines screwed into the front of the block near the top.
The motor is probably worth something to someone restoring a certain year car
.Send me a picture of the numbers too and I will do some research.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Disc Brakes

2010-03-29 Thread z16chevelleguy
Nope, nope, nope--you have to do it yourself-here are the instructions--

To unsubscribe from this service you must first purchase a
Craft-O-Matic Adjustable Subscription Cancellation Unit. The unit can be
obtained from most hardware stores and dental clinics.
Be sure to obtain the proper permits to operate the unit from the
Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Food and Drug Administration in
Washington D.C. USA.
Be sure to carefully unpack the kit and place each component in its
accompanying mesh safety bag.
Mount the Pershing DF4 mesinator on top of the perforated Gerring Mach
77 refibulator and attach them using the eight-millimeter torque fork.
Be sure that the refibulator is mounted at a 66 degree angle and
properly dispersed so that it is flush with the curved section of the
Pyrex thistle tube. Place the four sections of the triangular separation
gear into the posture cylinder and lock them into place using the
band aid adhesive strip. Insert the wiggling pin into the wobbling
hole, making
sure that it seated correctly.
Place the D cell battery and the eleven 9 volt batteries in the power
chamber.
The device should be calibrated before operation using the optional
digital corkscrew accessory pack prior to operation. Insert the
digital corkscrew through the electronic
combustion service chamber using caution not to touch the reinforced
tungsten igniter control module and quickly turn the inverter drive to
28.6 degrees. Turn the Craft-O-Matic Adjustable Subscription
Cancellation Unit upside
down and hit the bottom plate with a 48-ounce ball-peen hammer while
shaking the unit vigorously. Force open the door to the incineration valve
compartment and set the pressure gauge to 719 psi.
Close the door and seal it shut with duct tape.
The unit should now be properly calibrated and ready to use.
Before activating the Craft-O-Matic Adjustable Subscription
Cancellation Unit, you must first elevate it to a height of 229 feet
above sea level to insure that the unit receives the proper oxygen level
and barometric pressure. Point the aerial to 17 degrees north by northeast to
within the parameters of the Telstar GS-2 weather satellite and
apply pressure to the wing shaft on the southern most section of the
modular accelerator. Using the special ratchet adapter supplied with the
unit, rotate the heater core to the "on" position. The "on" position
has been obtained when the green light begins to flash, signifying that
the red light is about to go off.
Once the red light is off, flip the toggle switch labeled "ON/OFF" to
the "ON" position and count to 47 before logging on to the system.
Logon using your username and password and wait for the prompt.
Once prompted you must check the box with the appropriate action you
wish to take and then press the pressure release button and turn off the
compressor while turning the hand crank at 231 meters per minute.
Next, press control, alt, delete, caps lock, shift, number lock, escape
and tab simultaneously. Press enter. You will have one second to complete the
procedure. If you fail to respond in the time limit allowed,
simply purchase a new Craft-O-Matic Adjustable Subscription Cancellation
Unit and start from the beginning.
Please remember that this is the only way we will
accept for you to unsubscribe from this service.
We have made every attempt to simplify the procedure
for your convenience. Failure to comply with the unsubscribe
policy will result in immediate termination of your subscription so
please follow the above directions closely.

They did Larry. See 1964 was like "woah, this car really needs improvement!"
then in 1965 it was "this car is pretty good, but its not perfect." Then in
1966 it was "this is pure perfection." After that it just all went downhill.

Why do plastic engine blocks cost so much? I need 1 for a 454 project and
another for a 440 Chrysler engine. At $450.00 each, I can run my electric hoist

company who does not over charge for these items please let me know.

Re: [Chevelle-list] 68 bucket seats

2009-10-31 Thread z16chevelleguy

Bob:

Really depends on how bad someone wants them. I sold a set of 68s to Kent Lewis

(use to come into this forum) that were like what you described. I dont know
what

shape your tracks are in but the ones on the seats I sold were prestine.

The seats were pulled out of a 12000 mile car in 69 or 70 and had sat for

35 years in my Dad's attic. The covers turned brittle but everything else

was like new. I had a new set of PUI covers.

I got 650 plus shipping out of them.

Bob,
That might be a little high but to get top price you may need to wait for a
while until someone really needs them. I typically see buckets selling for $300
and then you could add in the covers at a price slightly lower than cost. Ask
$500 and they should move a little quicker. Would also suggest putting an add
on chevelles.com

I have a set of 1968 chevelle bucket seats that i'am trying to sell for a
friend. They need to be recovered, but he has the new covers to go with them. I
put them on craigs list last week asking 650.00. Do ya'll think i'am
overpriced. I looked on e bay and did'nt see any in as good a shape as these.
The only thing wrong with them is the covers, everything else is in very good
condition. The covers he purchased are from Original parts group. And they
alone sell for 250.00. if any body knows anyone who might be interested I have
some pictures  i'll e-mail to any one who's inertested. Let me know if you
think I'am over priced. Thank you Bob L.

Re: [Chevelle-list] 65 to 66 question

2009-09-11 Thread z16chevelleguy

I found this info:

1964-67 Chevelle rear ends were manufactured by the Chevrolet Gear and Axle
Division.  The housing measures 53.25 inches from backing plate to backing
plate and with the brake drums in place, the total width is 60.00 inches. Axle
tube flange-to-flange is 54.25 inches.

* 1968-72 Chevelle rear end housings measure 58.5 inches from flange to flange,
and with the brake drums in place, the total width is 62.5 inches. (Note: Other
sources put the total width at 61.125" to 61.25".) Axle tube flange-to-flange
is 55.25 inches.

A second measurement to check is centerline distance between spring perch
seats.  1964-1967 are 35 1/16 inches between seats where 1968-1972 are 34 31/32
inches.

If I'm not mistaken 64 thru 67 are the same width, it's the 68-72 that are
wider than the 64 thru 67.

2009-05-08 Thread z16chevelleguy

Trevor has been a regular in here for some years. When he first came in here I
questioned what he was doing and everyone seemed to think it was ok . Once or
twice a year he sends us an email mentioning his sale or the fact he is going
to be @ a certain swap meet (Pomona I believe). Since that time, this is the
first complaint about him doing this that I can recall. We have several members
in here that either sell something or indirectly lead us to someone who is
selling something.I believe there are some in here that have actually bought
from Trevor. This forum is for the preservation and restoration of Chevelles ,
which many in here contribute to that cause.I find it no different than asking
Alex LaRue about insurance or buying one of Dale's CDs , which I have no
problem with them doing.Another member worked ( still works there part time
while going to school) @ True Connections and he every once in a while will
plug True Connections for parts as will I.

Dan is right, http://.mcmaster.com is one source for finding the rivnuts and
after you pick out the insert you want to use it will list different
installation tooling they offer. These do work very well if installed
correctly and you can even break off the head of a grade 8 bolt before the
insert will start to spin, but you must (and this is critical using this type
of product)have exactly the correct hole size called out for the insert you are
using. There are also different types of inserts with some being stronger than
others. AVK has one that is called the AT which is actually two pieces and the
lower half pulls up into the upper half and expands it behind your panel and
holds it in place, the solid inserts pull material up and bubble behind your
panel to hold the threaded nut in place.
Do a search for AVK Inserts www.avkfasteners.com They have a very nice hand
tool that is sold for engineering testing(if you look up this sight, they have
a really nice engineering kit that has an assortment of inserts and the
T-Handle tool in a plastic case) I have one and use these things in my
Chevelle, lawn mower, and all over the house, It has a T-handle that inserts
into a body with with the adapter for the size you are setting, the body has a
bar coming out that is used to hold the body and insert in position and not
rotate while you are tightening the insert with the T-Handle.
Emhart has also come out recently with a line called the Pop-Nuts which are
identical to the AVK and Rivnut line. There are also a whole bunch of imports
out there now as well.
Do you know anyone who works for a large truck garage? If you have a friend
there, maybe he can help you out and save you some money for the tool and a
couple of inserts. They use them all over the place in truck garages to repair
pulled off mirrors, screws or bolts that have gotten pulled thru the sheet
metal, etc. Maybe he could just bring home the tool they have for a evening
and a few of the sized inserts you need and your done. Just make sure he looks
up or you do the correct size whole for the insert you are using. They usually
will provide a decimal or drill size to use.
I hope this helps and is not just run on mumbling. I have sold these things
since 1979 and helped engineer them into all kinds of products and machinery,
but for very high volume utilizing pneumatic tooling which is great to work
with and very fast, so I know they do work, and work well, just take your time
installing and make sure you have the correct hole size to match the insert.

You could install rivnuts or rivet nuts. Search for part number 93483A810 on
http://www.mcmaster.com/ . There is a diagram as well that will give you an
idea of how they install.

If you have access to a sheet metal shop, they should have installtion tool.
Found a link where a guy made a crude tool to do the install
http://www.fjr1300.info/howto/rivnut-tool.html but nou sure how well that will
work.

There are no nuts where the front sway bar bolts up, just holes drilled in the
frame and threaded. Very weak and a common place to be stripped out because the
metal is so thin.

I'm not sure what you mean. Does the trans shift at the slightest throttle. If
so, it sounds like you may have bad modulator. If the modulator is bad the
trans may think it's at speed and shift. If it shifts late, you may have a
sticking governor. Make sure the vacuum hose is connected to the modulator
and intake.

the truck does also have a plow on it but these rods are further back- both
have a flattened end with a bolt hole (?) in them.

Re: [Chevelle-list] drive shaft lenght

2008-08-26 Thread z16chevelleguy
Yes there was a short and long shaft TH350.This was done for long wheel base
cars and trucks like the C and K trucks, impala cars, etc so the driveshaft
wouldnt have to be quite as long

The short shaft uses a 6" tail shaft lenght and long shaft has a 9" tail shaft.

Also there was no TH350 in 66 chevelles only powerglides,4 speeds and 3 speeds

-- Original message --
From: "Roger Waterhouse" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

As far as I know the TH350 came in long and short tailshaft versions.

Where did you find this car ? Be very careful buying a car sight unseen. Most

changed my mind .There is nothing worse than looking at your new car coming off
of a transporter and saying to yourself "WTF did I do to deserve this?" But for
the price of a round trip ticket it may be worth just flying out and looking @
it before the final sale. Then you can have it transported.
As far as transportation , do not just take the lowest bid. Make sure whoever
hauls your car has a good history.Ask us in here about car haulers. I had a
horrible experence when I had my Chevelle moved several years ago. The car
disappeared for 14 days and when I received it, the insurance company for the

2 door hardtop. I wrote @ one time that the number was 3.17 inches, but I
have seen anywhere from 2 to four inches. I have looked everywhere online and
my
last resort is to go through all my assembly books. I am not sure if I have
the El Camino Length.
What I need to know is:
1) The difference in length between the hardtop and El Camino ?
2) Where on the frame to take the length out of ?
3) If you have an answer where did you get it?
4) Galvanize Vs POR 15 vs Powder coat ?
5) Paint my new FAB 9 housing with Hammertite vs POR 15 vs Powder coat ?
6) Frame and housing colors ?
7) Standard Detroit Locker Vs ARB air locker ?

   Thanks

I have a 98 GMC 1 ton (3500) and have done the brakes 3 times. First time I
just changed the pads. The second time I had a shop do it ($200.00) and they
turned the rotors on the vehicle. The third time I pulled the rotors just like
Dan mentioned (had to use a puller to break rotor off the spindle) and the
next time a shop is going to do them. With the hub pressed on to the rotor it
was hard for the machine shop to set them up to turn. After I bought pads and
had the rotors turned I was into the job close to $125.00 and close to 5 hours
of my time. I am not a novice at this sort of stuff and had all the right
equipment. Again as Dan mentioned the best thing to do is make sure you use
premium pads.

Place the D cell battery and the eleven 9 volt
batteries in the power
chamber.
The device should be calibrated before operation using
the optional
digital corkscrew accessory pack prior to operation.
Insert the digital corkscrew through the electronic
combustion service
chamber using caution not to touch the reinforced
tungsten igniter
control module and quickly turn the inverter drive to
28.6 degrees.
Turn the Craft-O-Matic Adjustable Subscription
Cancellation Unit upside
down and hit the bottom plate with a 48-ounce
ball-peen hammer while
shaking the unit vigorously.
Force open the door to the incineration valve
compartment and set the
pressure gauge to 719 psi.
Close the door and seal it shut with duct tape.
The unit should now be properly calibrated and ready
to use.
Before activating the Craft-O-Matic Adjustable
Subscription
Cancellation Unit, you must first elevate it to a
height of 229 feet
above sea level to insure that the unit receives the
proper oxygen level
and barometric pressure.
Point the aerial to 17 degrees north by northeast to
within the
parameters of the Telstar GS-2 weather satellite and
apply pressure to
the wing shaft on the southern most section of the
modular accelerator.
Using the special ratchet adapter supplied with the
unit, rotate the
heater core to the "on" position. The "on" position
has been obtained
when the green light begins to flash, signifying that
the red light is
about to go off.
Once the red light is off, flip the toggle switch
labeled "ON/OFF" to
the "ON" position and count to 47 before logging on to
the system.
Logon using your username and password and wait for
the prompt.
Once prompted you must check the box with the
appropriate action you
wish to take and then press the pressure release
button and turn off the
compressor while turning the hand crank at 231 meters
per minute.
Next, press control, alt, delete, caps lock, shift,
number lock, escape
and tab simultaneously.
Press enter. You will have one second to complete the
procedure.
If you fail to respond in the time limit allowed,
simply purchase a new
Craft-O-Matic Adjustable Subscription Cancellation
Unit and start from
the beginning.
Please remember that this is the only way we will
accept for you to
unsubscribe from this service.
We have made every attempt to simplify the procedure
for your

Re: [Chevelle-list] List Etiquette

2007-02-24 Thread Z16CHEVELLEGUY
Hello List:
While we are on the subject of lists, I have a question. The Chevelle club
that I belong to has a list somewhat like this on Yahoo. The problem is nobody
uses it correctly most of the time.If one wants to ask everyone a question I
have no problem. But usually it will go something like this, "How many of the
committee members will be showing up the meeting?" Instead of emailing the
show committee, the President emails the entire mailing list. Then everyone on
the committee will answer using that subject line. Then one of them emails
back with "Hey I can't come because its my 50th birthday". Then instead of
changing the subject line everyone answers saying "Happy Birthday" or
whatever.
So then a simple "Who is coming to the meeting " turns into 25-30 nonsense
emails. Is there a way to let them know this is annoying and he should be
emailing certain people instead of to the group without offending them ?

Don't get me wrong, the Chevelle List is pretty good about not doing this.
Would emailing the list moderator be the best solution and explain to him the
problem? I value everyone's opinion and would appreciate some input. Now the
problem is this, Does everyone on the list want to hear about this or should I
ask you to email me directly ?

Herb:
How are you disconnecting the power?
Does it want to turn over when you hookup the battery cable?
Either a cable touching the solenoid or a bad solenoid will do what you are
describing.
