Brady" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Chevelle Group" Sent: Friday, November 10, 2006 5:35 PM Subject: [Chevelle-list] 327 question Drove the '66 to work today, and decided to throw this question out to "the Council": My car runs great, and the 327 has an aluminum intake, speed pro 10.5:1 pistons, crane powermax cam (272/284), Comp Cams roller rockers, and freshly built camel hump heads with pinned in studs. Valves have been redone within the past 2-3 years with MAYBE 1000 miles on them, and I have new valve springs and retainers (also Crane, to match the cam). All that being said, it runs great with one small pet peave.. When I drive the car it runs flawlessly UNTIL I get to 2000 RPMs on the tach, at which point I hear a slight "chatter". That's the only way I can describe it. I've heard hung up lifters before, and that's not the noise- that's a chronic "tap-tap-tap-tap" (like 1-2-3-4). This, in my best impression, goes "dadadadadadada" in a much faster interval, thus the chatter description. It sounds like it's on the driver side of the engine, and happens ONLY at 2K RPMs.. I drop back, it goes away- I increase throttle PAST 2K RPMs, it goes away. I thought maybe it might be something bumping the dipstick or something stupid like that, so I moved the dipstick and it still happens. I don't think it's worth pulling the engine back out to check, but it's damned frustrating. Anyone have any guesses? I do not have valve guides and I wondered if it might be that I need them. Another note, I had the same noise when I had my 260/272 cam in it, which I just swapped out to the 272/284 as of this year. I thought maybe the disassembly and reassembly might make it go away (with readjustment of the valves), but it's still there so I'm guessing it's lower end noise. But from where and why ONLY at that revolution? Thanks in advance, Jim '66 Malibu Cheap talk? Check out Yahoo! Messenger's low PC-to-Phone call rates. http://voice.yahoo.com

You know, that sounds logical actually- since I'm only hearing it when the car is moving. And I haven't been back to those bolts since the engine went in the car in '03. Thanks for the input Herb- I'm pretty sure it's engine-related, as I've put the car back together from scratch as you know, and I'd hoped to eliminate any of that hubub to avoid making you guys compensate for it 8^] As for the tranny, plain ole PG 2 speed automatic. Re: [Chevelle-list] 327 question
Hi Jim, Let me start off by saying, you do have valve guides, maybe you meant to say you didn't have them replaced when the work was done on the heads? Either way, you have them. As for the noise, are you sure it's coming from the engine? Do you have a manual or auto trans? It could be something in the clutch and/or linkage that doesn't like that particular rpm and it rattles. Maybe something under the body/frame is very close to the engine/trans and at that rpm things move just enough to make contact. Food for thought. Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Check for vacuum leaks. I've had more than one motor that I was sure I assembled right suck air from somewhere. First I check vacuum lines, then I listen for telltale whistles while the engine is running. If I can't locate something that way I'll use a propane torch. I open the valve slightly and pass the nozzle around the base of the carburetor or around the edges of the intake manifold where it meets the heads. If you get the nozzle close to where a vacuum leak is it sucks in the propane and the engine smooths out. Just remember, you are using a flammable gas. Make sure you don't have a spark plug wire arcing somewhere first and do it in a very well ventilated area..like outside. There's no need to get too close to the distributor. There's nothing there that would be a vacuum leak anyway Spraying carburetor cleaner around the base of the carb and around the intake manifold will achieve the same results but carb cleaner is one of the best paint removers I've ever seen. [Chevelle-List] 327 Question
Hi all, We took your advise on having the 327 heads rebuilt good thing to - the original motor has the power pack heads with small combustion chambers and the 350 heads had 76cc combustion chambers. We would have lost tons of compression. Anyway - another problem. My son installed an Edelbrock high prof. cam, high prof valve springs, Edelbrock timing gears and chain, Crane roller rockers, and crane push rods. He already has an edelbrock manifold and Hei ignition. We rolled back the crank to 5 degrees before TDC and then dropped the distributor (as edelbrock instructed). We have set the valve lash 3 times now and dropped in the distributor twice. the darn thing doesn't seem to time up right. Lots of power but runs like shit, misses and pings. Any Ideas??? We've been told the crane rockers and push rods are compatible with the Edelbrock cam but I'm getting a little concerned about the clearance.
