Well, after making about 8 passes down the drag strip I concluded that
removing the sway bar didn't make enough of a difference in my car, at
the ETs and speeds I run, to make it worthwhile leaving it off.

I didn't pick up anything in my 60' times and I don't like the fact that
the front end feels looser even in a straight line.

If I get the car into the 10s on muscle, then it may be worthwhile.

I put it back on.

Dave,

Thanks for clearing it up. It looks like the only time it affects anything
is when one wheel tries to lift. Otherwise, since the bar should be free
to rotate in the bushings, there would be no effect.

Funny this thread should come up. I've been talking to some friends at
the track who say my 60' times would be better and translate into
quicker ETs if I would remove my front sway bar.

My 60' times have been between 1.64 and 1.66 consistently and my ETs,
depending on the humidity, have been between 11.7s and 11.8s.

I took the front sway bar off tonight. Technically, I should get better
weight transfer because the front end will now rise faster at launch. I
expect the front of the car will roll to the right more also. I'll let
you know my verdict and whether or not I consider it an improvement.

Remember, this is a drag race only modification where the car is
expected to perform in a straight line. Cornering isn't an issue here. I
wouldn't even consider removing the sway bar if the car was driven on
the street regularly.

Bob, in theory, you're basically right. Disconnecting the sway bar, I

helping
weight transfer. But, you need to be launching pretty hard (like, say,

How about educating me? It seems that if the car is set up correctly the
front end will come straight up (assuming no torque roll) in which case
the antisway bar shouldn't affect weight transfer. According to what I
see
in the geometry, the only time the bar has any effect is when one wheel
tries to come up first.

I have the big bar on my '70. I believe it might be 1 1/4" on the
F-body
cars, and 1 1/8" on A-body cars if it came that way from the factory.
Don't
quote me on that. I bought a 2nd-Gen F-body bar off eBay. The
improvement
in handling (and more specifically, less body roll) is drastic. I love
it.

However, I think your car needs to be in the 11s before a sway bar could
really hurt your straight line performance (more specifically, hindering
weight transfer). Unless you trailer your car to the track, I wouldn't
recommend disconnecting the sway bar.

As for the sideways motion, Lahar, I think that's called a powerslide..

BTW: the thick anti-sway bar from a 2nd gen f-body will bolt right
up. Find one from a '78 T/A or so. I can't remember exactly what the
diameter is, but it's like 1 1/8" or so. It'll drastically improve
your front end handling/cornering if that's what you want. However, it
will hurt your straight line performance, if that's what you want.

You are speaking about the front sway bar aren't you? Do you know what

The f 41 suspension was an option. If your car is an SS 19,293 cars were made
and 16,431 came with the f 41 suspension which cost a whole whopping $30.55
extra. The rear anti-sway bar is still available from GM.

In the Upper Midwest we have the "doughnut", "cookie" and "looped it", but
always be aware of the light poles!

breath until I closed the garage door and found no damage)

In some very extreme cases, we call it a 'donut' here.

Your car may not have one.it's an option. If you have one, you can't miss
it. In the front it will be a bar that connects to the botton of one a-arm
and goes to the other a-arm. In the rear it will be connected to each lower
control arm and crosses just under the rear end cover.

Hope this helps

Is there any reason for having the anti sway
bar removed?
I simply cant't find one on my -71 chevelle 2-d

Strange or have I missed sth?
Where is it supposed to be

This is getting ugly?
