No, I won't be putting headers on it. All I really want is to get it on the
road and drive it.

And thanks to everybody who responded. I got a private email from somebody
who is mad at me for not publicly thanking him for responding. He said it
ruined his day. I hope you have a better day today.

[Chevelle-List] Flowmaster install

2002-11-07 Thread John Nasta
Well, good news! Ron is back to work on my 69 El Camino. He says the glass
is back in and he's going to block it one more time and put another coat of
primer on.

My question is, what's the procedure for having a shop install Flowmasters?
Do I need to buy them and bring them to the shop? I was hoping I could just
buy them myself and bring them to the local Meineke or whoever bends their
own pipe. Right now all I have on the car is two open pipes that end
underneath the floorboards. I'm thinking about the three-chamber version
because it's not a race car, but I do want it to have a little bit of a
rumble. I have a friend who has the two-chamber Flowmasters on a 70 SS
clone, and it's too loud for what I want (although he has a 454 and I have a
283, but still).

TIA for any advice,
John Nasta

Flowmaster makes a kit you can bolt directly up. It's called the American
Thinder System. It's a 2.5 H-pipe setup, you can get it with or w/o the
mufflers. i have it on my 70 and it fit very nice. I had the whole thing
installed in about an hour. Any good muffler shop can do the job if you take
them the new mufflers. It may be cheaper if you get the shop to get them, ya
never know, they may get them at wholesale cost. I ordered my setup from
Jeg's and did it on the weekend in my garage.

2002-11-07 Thread HarKemAsso
John,
thats what i have done in the past (brought my own muffs in) i had one shop complain
that he was not going to make any money on the mufflers if i did that, BUT THEN I JUST
WENT SOMEWHERE ELSE. if you are worried about flow i would go to a regular fab shop
who could put madrel(? spelling) bent stuff on for you- i have seen some pretty
restricted stuff come out of muffler shops (like on my v8 s10). there are also
diffrent thickness of pipe and kinds too, aluminized, stainless (this does not rust
but i heard it turns brown from the heat and looks like rust) also some swear by h-
pipes. my engine builder told me that he has found they just cut down the noise a
little, no real power gains. (??) and also they hang down lower and make removing the
trans driveshaft a pain- but they could use fittings here too for that. just some
ideas to get you thinking, i/m not sure if all my info is correct but this is what i
have been told.

Thanks Tom,

Yeah, I see that kit and I can get a deal on it myself directly from
Flowmaster. The nice thing about the El Camino kit (17120) is that it comes
with the stainless exhaust tips and is pre-bent to exit behind the rear
wheel wells. All nicey nicey when done. I guess I'll go that route. It's
probably the most efficient and probably even less expensive than buying the
mufflers and then paying a shop to bend pipes (and I won't have to worry
about trusting some shop mechanic with my newly restored car).

Thanks for the info. I'm glad to hear that it fits well and installs easily.

2002-11-07 Thread Leo
For what it’s worth, I installed the Flowmaster kit for the El Camino on my
70. I installed it in my driveway and it fit like a dream. The ‘H’ pipe
and all pipes are above the frame rails, don’t drag. The two pipes that
connect to the headers are adjustable and need to be cut to fit. I used a
regular pipe cutter for plumbing pipe, three wheels that role around the
pipe to be cut. I used the band type clamps from Dynomax. The system came
with all hardware and hangers to install. I substituted the Dynomax clamps
for the regular muffler clamps. Other than that you got everything needed
to install.

I had an American Thunder exhaust system installed on my 67 and, while
not a bolt-on job that can be done in the driveway easily, any
competent muffler shop should be able to handle it. The kit assumes
headers so you still have to weld up the pipes to the collector reducer.
I have a short .WAV file at

Hmmm, Leo also mentioned headers. I don't have headers. Just stock x-mans.
Is that going to be a problem? I guess I'll have to call Flowmaster again
tomorrow and double-check.

It shouldn't be a problem, just cut the length to fit to your stock
exhaust pipe. My point was that it's not a DIRECT REPLACEMENT all the
way to the exhaust manifold AND you'll have to weld or band clamp the
pipes together which I consider not a typical driveway installation like
factory style exhaust.

Thanks Dale,

That should not be a problem. I have two brand new pipes that come down from
the x-mans and end under the floorboards, so I have plenty of good pipe to
connect to.

I guess in the true spirit of a typical driveway installation I should use
a coffee can and 2 clamps to make a patch :)
