Re: [Chevelle-List] The X pipe
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List I know several people that claim both increased power and better/quieter exhaust system noise with an X-pipe installed. However, I believe they're all using the Dr. Gas version, which is definitely more expensive than the Magnaflow. A friend of mine actually did a little bit of research as he was considering making his own; I'll see if I can pick his brain. Brad O. [Chevelle-List] Magnaflow x-pipe
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List I asked a friend of mine about the Magnaflow x-pipe; he was considering it for his '74 Super Duty T/A but wound up using the Dr. Gas version instead. Apparently the Magnaflow pipe is constructed by welding 2 x-shaped halves together and this allows the internal crossover to be easily shaped. His reply is below. Brad PS He lives in Arkansas so Critter is a perfectly acceptable nickname. ;^) Long story short, I couldn't find any users of the Magnaflow and I didn't want to be the one to test it. The design appears to be sound. The stamped halves would be a smoother transition than two 90 degree bends with holes cut in the welded area. I'd have tried it but I just didn't have the money to do it twice if I wasn't happy. Thus the decision to go with a proven performer. Re: [Chevelle-List] The X pipe
Hey Larry; I have built several X pipe exhaust systems for different cars. I have gotten mandrel bends from Hooker headers, andwelded custom mandrel bend exhaust systems. They are the best! I read a article that the"H" pipe was devolopedfor theHemi engines but lose effectiveness over thirteen inchs in length. The X pipe is that much better, it is the best possible H pipe in a manner of speaking. The reason why is:If you think about a Chevy firing order, 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2, on the leftside 5 and 7 fire oneright after another, and on the right bank 8 and 4 fire one right after another. This causes a BIG increase in exhaust pressure onfor a short peroid. The X pipe divides the pressure evenly between the two mufflers. You can here that the exhaust is quieter and smoother. It also makes a noticeable increase in HP, even on a stocker. I am sure as the power goes up the improvement is more dramatic.
