Re: [Chevelle-list] VIN numbers matching

Shouldn't the entire tag number on the firewall match the tag on the A pillar
inside of the door on a Chevelle?

Thanks for your time

Jerry

Re: [Chevelle-list] VIN numbers matching

2009-03-23 Thread Dale
No, none of should. The tag on the firewall is the Fisher Body number plate
(aka trim tag, cowl tag, etc.) while the VIN plate on the A-pillar is the
Chevrolet identification from GM. Body numbers are generally sequential by
particular STYLE shown on the trim tag while the VIN plate is sequential per
plant in production order regardless of series or body style.

Another misconception is the Style number on the trim tag indicates a V8 or
L6 engine -- it does not. The first 5 numbers of the VIN do indicate if it
was born with a V8 or L6 and the body style (sport coupe, conv., pickup,
wagon, etc.) but the Style number on the trim tag is a different animal.

[Chevelle-list] VIN numbers where are they?

2007-05-20 Thread Chuck Kranz

I had heard that the VIN numbers on the body are stamped on a few
places. If the plate with stuff that's supposed to show build
information VIN etc. is missing from the dash, where else can I look? I
can get access to underneath. This is for a 65.

Thanks,
Chuck

Re: [Chevelle-list] VIN numbers where are they?

2007-05-20 Thread Dale
The hidden CON VINs don't tell much at all. They are in the format of
(depending on year) year, plant, sequence number - they do NOT include the
series or model. For example a 65 CON VIN might read 5A123456.

The 65 VIN plate is on the A-pillar on the driver's side, not on the dash.
The dash mounting didn't start until 1968 so they could be viewed through
the windshield from the outside. Are you sure you're not talking about the
Fisher Body plate (a.k.a. trim tag or cowl tag) that's mounted on the engine
side of the firewall? That'll tell you body date, plant, body number, trim
and paint codes and for some plants, a few options.

Every state is different. Fisher Body plates are not recognized as a legal
means of identifying or registering a vehicle. I don't know of any
locations on a 65 body with a CON VIN but there should be one on the frame
behind the rear axle location on the driver's side top.

If you're putting together one car from two or more, your state will
probably want to issue you a state VIN. Again, check with your DMV for
regulations in your state.

2004-08-27 Thread Dale McIntosh
Actually, this is true only for 69 to 72 (with one exception). On 64-68 Chevelles,
the VIN would indicate a SS or not since the SS was a separate model in those years.

The one exception is the 72 Chevelle/Elky with a 454 engine code (W) in the VIN.
The 454 could ONLY be had with the SS option. Other engines (350-2, 350-4, 402-4)
could be had with the SS option but nothing would indicate it. They could also be
ordered without the SS option.

The VIN plate will tell you 4 things and 4 things only.
1. Model (e.g., Malibu hardtop, 300 sedan, wagon, elky, etc).
2. The model year of the car.
3. The final assembly plant.
4. The sequential production number of Chevelles at that particular plant.
5. In 1972, the VIN would also indicate the engine size installed.

The Body Plate (trim tag or firewall tag) will tell you the approx assembly timeframe,
interior trim level, interior color/fabric, lower and upper paint colors, and for
64-67 (some plants) options, and a couple more minor items.

You might check the machined pad in front of the passenger side head. It should have
the engine suffix code and assembly date, plus it should have a portion of the VIN
such as 0A123456 where 123456 would match the VIN on the car. This match would mean
an original-to-the-car engine and if it's a big block then the car would be a SS for
1970 since the big blocks in 69 and 70 meant the SS option was ordered.

RE: [Chevelle-List] Vin Numbers

2002-11-07 Thread Dale McIntosh
Title: RE: [Chevelle-List] Vin Numbers

The 72 Chevelle was the first to have the engine size in the VIN; the 5th digit of the VIN was the key. I don't know about other makes/models, but for Chevelle's there is no way to tell what size engine came the car with one exception - that being the 66-68 SS models (138x7 VIN) designating a SS396. The horsepower rating was still a guess, but it HAD to have come from the factory with a 396. All other years (and 66-68 NON SS models) could only be decoded as a 6-cyl car or a V-8 car - no more/no less. Example, my 67 Elky came with a V-8 according to the VIN (13680) but which V8 (283 or 327) is impossible to tell from the VIN itself. The Protect-O-Plate tells me it came with a 275hp 327 and the engine numbers on the front pad match a 67 327 engine with a correct build date for the car.

So, go punch him in the nose :*)

FWIW, there are people on the list who swear that a partial VIN was stamped on the front pad as early as 1966 but I think it may have been factory specific. My 67 has a 69 396 engine in it and it does NOT have the VIN stamped on the front pad. My 67 327 Elky (built in Fremont) does not have the VIN stamped on the front pad either.

No,

I have a buddy at work who swears there has to be some way to tell. This has

almost come to fisticuffs at times!! I would hate to think I've been saying

that there's no way to tell, and then have him find that there is a way. I

know in later years the is a call letter in the VIN that designates the CID,

but nothing for the earlier cars. Thanks for the info. Take it easy. Oh ya,

last day for my 65 on Ebay.

[Chevelle-List] Vin Numbers

2002-11-06 Thread Dan McIntosh

Howdy all,
Does anyone on this list know how to tell exactly
what motor came in a GM car? Other than having the build sheet, is there
anything in the vin that would help. All I've ever seen from the Vin tag is the
number of cylinders. I've read discussion threads saying that most all of the
body tags say V8. Mopars and Fords seem to have this info displayed prominently.
Is The General keeping this info secret for some reason. Thank you.
