Title: Message Almost, Grasshopper. The SS option was also available in 1969 on the 13427 300 Deluxe 2-dr sedan and 13437 300 Deluxe 2-dr hardtop. Haven't seen it happen yet, but it probably will someday - someone might try taking a 13835 trim tag (67 Concours wagon) or 13825/45 (68 Concours wagon) and put them on a Malibu thinking someone may only be looking at the 138 portion of the tag and hoping they don't check the VIN. BTW, 1969 also had 13836/46 Concours Estate wagons and the 13857 Monte Carlo in the 70's. I'm as guilty as the next guy stating that "138" defines a SS car not thinking of the wagon models or MCs. Hey Sarge, Being that SS equipment was an option in 1969, I'm now back to square 1 (Gotta find the damn build sheet!) Title: Message Thanks for verifying that I'm not completely crazy. I'll have to check the copyright date tonight. Probably 1968. I'd venture to guess that Chevy put out the manual the year prior to production. That way it could be in the shops, when the cars rolled in for repairs. Not to mention that cars are usually released up to a year prior to the production year. The El Camino SS was a shock to me as well, but it's listed in the chart. Wierd. Maybe mine is a true SS. RE: [Chevelle-list] 69 SS stuff
Me thinks your book is incorrect there Sarge. There is no 13837 model for 1969; that's why there's no 13867 for a convertible. The only 138xx models in 1969 were the two Concours wagons. The 1966 and 1967 SS396 sport coupe (hardtop) had a unique, two-year only model of 13817, other 138 SS sport coupes were 13837. The 13880 for the SS El Camino is a fairy tale as well, 1968 was the ONLY year to use that model number. Just for grins, there are no 13446 model Greenbrier, 4-door wagon, 3-seat 6-cyls either; 13446 V8 yes, 13446 no. There are also no 13546 (6 cyl) Malibu Concours wagons either. Re: [Chevelle-list] 69 SS stuff
After looking some more I found that same chart in CHEVROLET BY THE NUMBERS by Alan L.Colvin.It shows that number for 1968 Chevelles. In 1969 the number was 13637 for 2 door coupe with SS 396 being an option. 1969 and up could not be identified by the VIN. do you have a print date on that book? I'm wondering if it was printed before they changed the way they identified them? Larry (Z)

Scott, Sorry to say that according to Chevy's manual, you car is the same as mine, a Malibu 2 Door Sport Coupe. Again, don't take this as the FINAL answer. If the guys/gals in here have further info, I'm sure they can add to this. As far as a theory to why it was sold as an SS, I'm stumped. SARGE 69SS/Clone
