Another trick is to use a long flat blade screwdriver and turn the oil pump shaft to match the distributor. Just loosen the distributor bolt, pick it up, and turn it clockwise to the next gear tooth, and drop it in. If it doesn't drop all the way in, rotate the engine and it will drop in when the oil pump gear aligns. Fire it up and set the timing. If it way off, go back the other way and use the same method.
