Re: [Chevelle-list] Distributors 101
-- Original message -- From: Larry Shouse [EMAIL PROTECTED] As a follow-up question, please explain to me the pros and cons of vacuum vs. mechanical advance. All OEM-style distributors have mechanical advance (the weights and springs under the rotor). Vacuum advance provides additional advance when the engine's under light load (high-vacuum situation) for economy purposes. Many race-only distributors don't have a vacuum advance canister because it would serve no benefit. I'll bet that at least one list member with a stock/original car has only mechanical advance because the vacuum canister's failed and he doesn't know it. Changing the cap and rotor is a good time to check it. Brad O.

I've mounted a complete Mallory 85 Series HEI Distributors and I'm very satisfied with that one! Compared with the old original one with points it's a completely new engine. The throttle response is monsterous :-) Feels like I have 50 bhp exra! Maybe something was wrong with the old one, I dont know? It obviously has vacuum advance. The latter is probably better for a street car because vacuum advance will improve fuel economy. I looked at an MSD distributor but the price on one was over $300. My Mallory was $176,shipped to my door. As I mentioned before, I'm looking for something I can drive now and then and take to the track once in a while for fun. I know I won't be putting anything in with points. I'm done with that! Re: [Chevelle-list] Distributors 101
I think mechanicals advance at a predetermined rate and vacuums advance in relation to manifold vacuum which is roughly dependent upon throttle opening. I have heard that it makes no difference in anything but race applications. Ditto for vacuum/mechanical secondaries in carbs. I was talked out of mechanical advances for either/both years ago but I can't remember exactly why... - Original Message - From: Larry Shouse To: The Chevelle Mailing List Sent: Monday, October 03, 2005 3:08 PM Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] Distributors 101 As a follow-up question, please explain to me the pros and cons of vacuum vs. mechanical advance. RE: [Chevelle-list] Distributors 101
Hi Larry, I recommend you give Performance Distributors a call. When you order one of their distributors they build it with a custom advance curve specifically for your engine. I've got one in my El Camino and in my Vette. I've never had any issues with either one! http://www.performancedistributors.com/index.html Herb Lumpphttp://users.adelphia.net/~hlump/index.htm -Original Message-From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]On Behalf Of Larry ShouseSent: Monday, October 03, 2005 3:04 PMTo: Chevelle ListSubject: [Chevelle-list] Distributors 101 OK next question - which distributor or type of distributor would you recommend for the 396 I'm building? I had a Performance Distributor in my 68's 468 bbc and never had any problems with it in over ten years. Very good product but also around $300 now. D.U.I builds the distributor exactly for your specific vehicle, other ones are more generic. Get HEI unit and set of their sparkplug wires and you will be good to go. D.R.
