On a side note, anyone have a pair of small block and big block mounts for 66/67 that can lay them flat on the floor and measure the two heights? I know there was a recall on all Chevrolet mounts in the 60s I believe due to the drivers side engine mount (rubber one that bolts to the block itself) tending to break and possibly causing the throttle to stick open. First solution was a cable unit applied to the drivers side engine mount. Later the engine mounts were designed with a locking tab to stop the engine from coming off the mount if it broke. My Chevrolet parts book (circa 1971) also has the locking mounts as dealer replacements and to use the big block frame mounts when doing so. This could be why a lot of small block Chevelles have big block frame and engine mounts. Dale McIntosh 67 El Camino 1967 Chevelle Reference CD http://www.chevellecd.com ACES #1709/TC Gold #92 No viru

Dale McIntosh 67 El Camino 1967 Chevelle Reference CD http://www.chevellecd.com ACES #1709/TC Gold #92

Re: [Chevelle-list] Engine Mount Question
I kept the 307 mounts in my 68 El Camino when I swapped in the 468 BB. Always thought the 307 mounts allowed the engine to be mounted a smidgen lower because I never had a problem with running a 4" tall air cleaner. Not sure about header clearances but my Hooker Comps worked ok once I installed a pair of Coil Spring Specialties 2" drop coils on the front. Later on,I installed a pair of Sanderson 1 7/8" intermediate headers and those solved all the problems. I bought a big block set, then discovered that the ones I got did not couple correctly with the chassis mounts. The upper mounts were too big. I tool one of the chassis mounts off and took it to a local parts store. We discovered the engine mounts that fit my chassis mount was identified to fit a 327. I guess the previous owner must have installed a small block at one time or another. Remembering a thread on the list where people said both will work, except the engine would sit a bit lower with the small block mounts, I bought a set of small block engine mounts and installed the engine. I have since discovered I need the engine to sit 1/2 to 1 inch higher to address my header clearance issues. I'm assuming if you set the SB and BB chassis mounts down side by side, the "hump" where the engine mount couples with the chassis mount would be larger and taller, raising the engine a bit? I appreciate your comments, Larry Shouse

Thanks Pete. Most of the stuff will come out of my '66 so that's taken care of. We were just discussing the tranny issue and my just swap my tranny too. I can always get a TH40 for my 396 anyhow. What am I gonna > need to look out for changing the straight 6 to a SB in my Girlfriend's '64??? The 230 will bolt to any tranny a SB mounts to. You can use the flexplate. I think the convertors are difeerent. The starters are similar but different in the brace from starter motor housing to block. The PG's themselves are different however. There's a difference in the gear ratio, clutch pack, some sixes have holes in bellhousing for cooling. A six cylinder PG might not hold up well behind a 350. (a turbo 350 is an easy swap though) To go from six to eight or vs versa you need the proper motor mounts, radiator(and filler panel for V8), engine harness, throttle and kickdown linkages, PS hoses, exhaust. Probably missing something. Pete Geurds Douglassville, PA

RE: [Chevelle-list] Engine Mount Question part 2
The holes for the frame mounts should already be in place, just get the frame and matching engine mounts - preferably those with the safety lock. Don't know if the PG will bolt up to the V8 or not, never made that swap - may need starter for the V8 (?). Naturally, you'll need all associated brackets for alt/ps/ac if equipped. Exhaust manifolds or headers. Might have to play a bit with routing of existing wiring such as alt. Factory or aftermarket parts for a V8 shouldn't be a big problem since the 64 was available with the 283. Re: [Chevelle-list] Engine Mount Question
Well, I can answer this one. http://65ss.com/index.php?m=20040605 If you look at my June 5th post, I show the differences in BB and SB mounts. The ONLY difference is a small recess in the mounts. If I would have known this, I would have saved about $100. If you big block clears the mounts, then you're fine. They are the same height. If you click the thumbnails, it will enlarge the pictures for you. [Chevelle-list] Engine Mount Question
My 65 SS originally had a SB (duh), I changed to a BB, and don't recall changing the front mounts Are the front mounts different. Is the height of the engine different? Trying to order headers and this issue came up. Larry Williams
