Larry, I live in Balto. MD and we also have some pretty cold winters. My garage
interior is insulated and dry walled. I have a propane heater sorta like the
Mr. heater but I also have an electric heater that runs on 220v. It has a fan
to circulate the air. The heater brand is a Q mark. The combination of the two
when I turn them on together is great. no matter how cold it is outside I can
get my garage to 70deg. F in about an hour. then I turn the propane off and
just let the electric heater maintain, It works really good. I think Grainger
sells the Q Mark heater. Good Luck. Bob.

I too live in Iowa and yes you are right. It is a cold winter this year.
Atleast we had a white christmas this time but now I am ready for spring.
As far a garage heaters go, I install alot of Reznor heaters in shops, garages,
warehouses etc they are fairly inexpensive to install and you can get a
bunch of different btuh sizes. Menards carries there own brand of Reznors.
I have never put one of theirs in but I dont see any reason that they wouldnt
work ok. Menards also carries a smaller ventless style heater that will heat
up to something like 500 sq feet. They do work good but if you let them run
along time, you will start to notice a smell. Both of those models can be ran
on LP. You just have to be sure you get the right one. I personally install
Reznor brand heaters that I get from Plumb Supply (wholesale) but I believe
that Grainger or Dennison also sells them. If you need any help let me know
and stay warm!!!

I live in Southern California, where its almost as cold as Iowa. :o)?? I know
you said you dont have LPbut for years and years we've had a Mr. Heater
that goes on top of a 5 gallon tank. Ours is the two burner model. We turn that
on low, both heaters, and within 20 minutes the garage is fine, warm enough to
work in. I would think if you turned both on to the high position for about 20
minutes it would have the same effect. Just an idea.

For years I used the Mr Heater in my attached 2 car garage and it did the
job, but then again West Texas is not as consistently cold as Iowa. I
haven't tried it yet in the new garage, probably not going to be near as
effective but it should take the chill off.So if you need a heater for a
not so cold area Mr Heater works the unit propane are not that expensive.

The one requirement I had when heating my garage was that it had to be a
Direct Vent appliance. Due to having a parts washer, and working with
solvents, I wanted the heater to draw combustion air from outside.
I looked around and finally found a California Furnace (wall furnace) at
a
local clearance shop, the unit is propane fired, direct vent, fan forced,
self contained, 55,000 BTU's and cost less than $500, there are even
provisions to install ducts to other areas if needed. I have had it for
about 5 years and it works great.

self contained, 55,000 BTU's and cost less than $500, there are even
provisions to install ducts to other areas if needed. I have had it for
about 5 years and it works great.

Here is a PDF of the brochure
http://dev.obatadesign.com/clients/Empire/2004Brochures/EmpireHeatingSystems/CounterflowWallFurnace.pdf

Just another idea.

Langus, Thanks for the reply. I am in the market to buy one. I am in
Western NY, (Rochester). Don't think I'm close enough to take advantage
of

your discount, but thank you. That's what I am looking for.
Trying to find something that I can save a few bucks on. I'll check out
the

Reznor site but I don't think they will sell to the public.
Thanks again.

Sure could use one this week. It's cold.

Yes.. That's the one.. it has a Bull Dog as a symbol.
The shop in the lower leel of a bank barn, it's 32 wide by 48 deep 14
feet high no windows or out side wall insulation.. but most is in the
ground except for the door end.. and thats a 18 ft insulated roll up
door..
We built his 34 street rod last winter and spent many many hours .. in just
jeans and T shirt..
Paint Fumes unless your have it in a tight place and the over spray is
thick like a cloud.. ( old BINKS gun )
I would not be too concerned.. If you have heat up the shop.. turn it off
when your painting..
that's what I did when I piled on the 4 coats of high build primer on all
the pieces of my 64

Do you mean the Modine Hot Dawg unit? I just got though installing the
75000
BTU propane Hot Dawg unit in my 24x36x9' garage. This is their largest
forced air unit, and is supposed to throw heat 36 feet. It does have to be
vented, however. The propane guy came last week, and we got it running,
but
I haven't had a chance to see how well it heats up the garage because I
haven't made a cover to block the stair well to second floor (where all
the
parts for my '66 Elky are stored). I've insulated the garage, so it should
heat up nicely. I'm in upstate NY, so it will get cooold here this winter.

One concern I have is painting. I certainly don't want vapors around the
open flame of the heater, and I'm not sure about sucking the vapors out in
the winter and loosing all that heat.

bought it at a hardware supplier up here, I'm not sure of the exact model,
but I bought the highest heat output version I could find. Since I leave it
on 24/7, I went with this style heater, for the safety reasons, plus, I
don't pay electricity, and the propane/kerosene style heaters would cost me
more in the long run, just paying for fuel.

Nice size Shop you got there JB... When I built mine 28 X40x 10 high. I was
given a Hot air heater from a Mobil storage/office ( read mobile home ) I
scrounged up a 275 gal tank out of the local paper for free and built a box
and got some 8 duct work.. from a local surplus supply house. So it was done
on the cheap.. but it heats my shop all year for 165 gal last year and I
keep the temp at 55 deg and turn when I first get there and plan to work..
but even at 55 deg is OK. Most of the times unless I am painting .

Theses units turn up regular in the local paper.. or call your local Mobil
home dealer.. they take them out of homes they take in trade and sell them
as salvage when they scrap the trailer...

Propane is another neat unit.. I good friend of mine has a Bull Dog unit..
it is in Hemmings motor news and some other hobby car rags.. He happy it's
in the basement of a old bank barn and keeps his shop toasty warm.. he has
city gas ?..so it was a no brainier..$$ wise..

Yep, the old fashioned looking deal. My garage is pretty small, though.
It's only a one car garage, but it doesn't seal very well around the door,
and winters up here get pretty cold. I'm completely impressed with it. I
bought it at a hardware supplier up here, I'm not sure of the exact model,
but I bought the highest heat output version I could find. Since I leave
it
on 24/7, I went with this style heater, for the safety reasons, plus, I
don't pay electricity, and the propane/kerosene style heaters would cost
me
more in the long run, just paying for fuel.

How well do the heaters work for larger spaces? The house I just bought
 has
 a 45 x 30 x 40 garage and I am a little worried about trying to heat it.
That's a lot of space to try to warm and keep warmed.

I may just end up getting some heat lamps and pointing them at myself as I
 work ;)

RE: [Chevelle-list] Garage heater

2004-11-24 Thread Brian Knight
I have a 30x40x12'high garage and I recently bought a propane heater that is
the radiant/infrared type. It attaches right on to the propane tank (the
grill type). It has been great. They offer a one or two burner version. I
got the single and it is adjustable from 8,000 to 14,000 btu. The double is
18,000 to 32,000 btu . It was 45.00 and I use a 30 lb. tank of propane. On
high it will burn 30 to 40 hours. Natural gas is not available to me, and at
least for now, electrical capacity is at a premium. (no new circuits until
AFTER the baby is born)

Re: [Chevelle-list] Garage heater

2004-11-24 Thread Tom Tomlinson
Do you mean the Modine Hot Dawg unit? I just got though installing the 75000
BTU propane Hot Dawg unit in my 24x36x9' garage. This is their largest
forced air unit, and is supposed to throw heat 36 feet. It does have to be
vented, however. The propane guy came last week, and we got it running, but
I haven't had a chance to see how well it heats up the garage because I
haven't made a cover to block the stair well to second floor (where all the
parts for my '66 Elky are stored). I've insulated the garage, so it should
heat up nicely. I'm in upstate NY, so it will get cooold here this winter.

One concern I have is painting. I certainly don't want vapors around the
open flame of the heater, and I'm not sure about sucking the vapors out in
the winter and loosing all that heat.
