They were basically a sticker and Rally wheels. Not only a 3 speed on the

Along with the domed hood with hood pins like the SS Equipment optioned
Malibus in 71 72. The 3-speed manual was the base transmission on the
Standard (13437/1C37) Chevelle regardless of engine although for some
reason, the Power Teams chart in the 71 restoration kit doesn't show a
3-speed for the350/265 L65 engine where 72 does. For 71 only the 2.54 low
gear 4-speed and Turbo Hydra-Matic are shown with the L65 engine.

The Heavy Chevys were the feature cars at Chevell A Bration 04. The 4 HCs
that were there were on the cover of Chevelle World July/August 04. There
was an orange with black side stripes, light blue with white side stripe,
light green with white side stripes, and a bronze with black side stripes
and black vinyl top. No hood stripes on any of them. They look like your
sisters car and run like your SS. Talk about sneaky.

I sent this to a "heavy chevy" expert of mine here's his

The Heavy Chevy was a marketing ploy on Chevrolet's behalf.
The Federal Government dropped the hammer on horsepower and emissions after 70.
In an effort to sell cars Chevrolet came up the marketing plan to sell cars
based on image and perception. The Heavy Chevy was a niche model positioned
between the Malibu and the SS. In todays verbage we'd call it a hybrid or
orphan. The premise was simple; Based model Chevelle series with stripes,

properly ordered. Most came with only a couple of options. Power brakes and
steering were optional.

A strike in early '71 delayed the introduction of the
Heavy Chevy model. They debuted in early March of 71. Total production was 6727.
They continued into the end of the '72 model year with 9503 being made in '72.
The Heavy model was only availble on a 2dr hardtop. No converitbles, sedans or
El-camino's were given this treatment. They were availble in every color offered
for the rest of the Chevelle line-up. Stripe colors were black and white and
could be installed on any color. With the exception of white on white and black
on black. It seems like most of the ones I see are also Orange. Coinsidently I
own two Heavys and both are Orange..

Hope
this helps.. If you have any more questions let me know.

Offered mid year71 and all of 1972. It started as a poor man's SS so to speak and was a sporty option that supposedly didn't attract higher insurance rates. It was off the base Chevelle platform while the SS was off the Malibu platform. It could be optioned up but I don't think you could get the 454 in it.

Dan Carrs page (http://www.chevelles.com/shop/ss_ident.html#71)
explains a little about the Heavy Chevy option in 71/72. According to the
page, the 454 was not offered on this model. Many Heavy Chevys were
cloned into SS cars since many of the options were already there. A quick
check of the VIN or even the Fisher Body plate will confirm the makeover as,
like stated below, the HC was based of the Chevelle (models 133xx/134xx for 71 or
1C3xx for 72) and not the Malibu.
