RE: [Chevelle-list] Magazines

2004-11-17 Thread PLGChevelle65
One last comment re mag subscriptions. I subscribe directly from the mags and
usually take advantage of their long term deals which are cheaper than one year
at a time. Check out the subscription cards in the mags. You know, the ones
that fall out when your reading. These are direct.

Be careful when these subscription cos call & pretend to be the mag co. They
usually ask if service is OK and are you enjoying the mag & want to offer you a
deal to renew & extend, etc. The mag cos obviously sell their mailing lists &
these other cos have no idea who they're talking to nor the length of your sub.
Just that you're a subscriber and potential meat! They call me all the time
with offers much more expensive than the mag co because they have to get their
profits & commissions also. Even my long term subs get me calls. On a good
day I tell them no thanks. On a bad day I give them a hard time because I know
what's going on. The No Call Law has helped. Know the terms of your
subscriptions. Look at your mailing labels for the dates and know what you
pay. Be aware that these cos are on the prowl & think they can get over on us
because we're "Gearheads". I don't know about you guys but I'd rather put my
$$ into my car than get ripped off by magazine telemarketers!! Enough Said.

Right now, I subscribe to Car Craft and Chevy High Performance. I grew up
on Hot Rod in the mid-late 80s (when Jeff Smith was editor) and after
picking up a recent copy, I could almost subscribe again. I used to like
Popular Hot Rodding when I was in college, but never subscribed for some
reason.

As for the regular car mags, I've had subscriptions to Car & Driver, Motor
Trend and Autoweek. I really like Autoweek, except for the fact that they
pile up so fast. However, the flip side to that is it guarantees fresh
reading material. I read C&D and MT online when the mood strikes anymore.

I dont know why I never joined ACES.. I'd like to check out their
publication sometime.

Other posters are right -- subscriptions are pretty darn cheap. I'll
usually ante up when one of the neighborhood kids is selling magazine
susbscriptions for a school fundraiser.

Sometimes Super Chevy's articles seem like full length ads for the latest

Only good news is someone there likes early Chevelles.

Any other magazines with a Chevelle slant?
Oh yeah.. I could join ACES, I was in NCOA and the local chapter and have

Road&Track, Motor Trend, Autweek seem to be in a subscription war judging
the low priced offers I've been getting.
Got to know how to recognize new cars so I can help my wife get something

My question is, what magazines do you subscribe

Hot Rod that compared all the Edelbrock intake manifolds that was
interesting, but I'm not sure I want a full subscription. What's worthwhile

I get the same ones Herb gets, except for Sport Bike, and a few more club mags
also. Same reason-subscriptions are cheap. Keeps you on top of what's
happening & how to stuff.
And you get to see cars like Herb's on the covers!!
The advertisements are also a good way to obtain catalogs & websites. These
cos want to promote & sell their products.

Most of the mags have diff articles from each other every month unless a really
super car gets newly completed and entered in a major show. Then they all seem
to highlight the same car within a few month period. You could probably get by
with a few select mags that fit your style & goals but you might miss a good
article and some great pics & stories. For about $150 a year you can get them
all. The problem I have is the time to read them all. They tend to stack up &
then I read about 10 at a time. I find I read more during the winter months
when I'm not tinkering, cleaning and showing. They also make you offers you
can't refuse. I've got some subscriptions that are paid ahead for over 5 years
and only cost a few dollars a year when averaged out. Just go with what your
time & wallet allow. If you miss an article, a copy is always available from
somebody and even some public libraries have them. Good Luck with your 66
Elky.

Over the years I've subscribed to most of the popular
magazines. But now I'm down to Hemmings Muscle Cars and
AutoRestorer. I'd subscribe to more, but I'm a packrat, save them
all, and don't have room. I really enjoy the variety of coverage in
Hemmings.AutoRestorer is a bit of an odd ball in that it covers
anything from a Brass Era Classic to late model vehicles. Lots of
How to's.

I've seen two or three recent issues of Hot Rod and have
enjoyed reading them again. The latest issue covered the Bonneville
Salt Flats meet. I can remember reading the same coverage in my mid
60's issues. Brought back memories. Anyway to answer your question
I'd continue to subscribe to a couple that really interest you and buy
others over the counter.

I get Chevelle World (ACES) for the specific content and Popular Hot
Rodding for the more general articles. I also get several other interest /
hobby magazines. I dropped Hot Rod a couple of years ago after subscribing since
the '60's. I got tired of their continual smart aleck responses to subscribers
who wrote in with suggestions. They seemed to have the attitude that they knew
everything there was to know about cars, and if you were from someplace other
than S. California and had another opinion, you were just some hick from
Hooterville. Then I got really ticked when they decided I had a delinquent
account when I didn't renew, and turned it over to a collection agency! A few
copies of letters I had sent Hot Rod got me off the hook, but I will never buy
another copy.

Last week we put a friend's '67 SS & our two '66 SS's under
car covers out in my garage for the winter. There's some ice on our lake every
morning now. I guess the magazines will have to hold me till Spring!
