In the early 70's Bobby Allison drove a Monte Carlo sponsored by Coca Cola. Several teams ran the early Monte Carlo until the 73 up Malibu's came out. They had a better top shape to put air on the spoiler. - Original Message - From: Dale To: 'The Chevelle Mailing List' Sent: Wednesday, May 31, 2006 3:09 PM Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] Nascar Chevelle? But, on the national level, Smokey Yunick had several years of Chevelles, 66-68 before he gave them up due to, what he termed, being over scrutinized by NASCAR tech officials. Re: [Chevelle-list] Nascar Chevelle?
I have been watching a show called Back in the Day hosted by dale jr. and it is a half hour show with highlights of races from the 60's and 70's. I watch it just to see all that old muscle. But I have seen 69 chevelles, the race they were running was a NASCAR road course. Personally I would like to see them come out with a vintage race series with mock ups of the old cars, and even some of the old drivers. Kind of live a seniors tournament like they do for golf. - Original Message - From: John [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: The Chevelle Mailing List Chevelle-list@chevelles.net Sent: Thursday, June 01, 2006 2:49 AM Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] Nascar Chevelle? I LIVE 37.3 miles from the Earnhardt Tower...Daytona Speedway! That said...the "Best Dam Garage" has been raised...I would believe any research would be accomplished best in person. I service the Nascar Corporate Pilot's personal vehicle and have GREAT access to most things Nascar. I would LOVE to assist! That said I will do some checking and let you know if I can be of any help with stories/pictures and if the car is close...I'll take more pictures to upload. Pelle, While researching some stuff for my '69 Charger , I saw what looked like a '68 or '69 Chevelle racing with Chargers and some random Fords. So I know that some were raced, but I haven't seen many pics of them anyplace.Someone will chime in with some good stuff soon!ShawnOn May 31, 2006, at 2:22 PM, Pelle Andersson wrote:Hi! I know he was involved in building the factory 66. The infamous 7/8 car, so-called because it was built to 7/8 scale and drove people nuts because they knew something wasn't quite right but they couldn't figure out what. IIRC this is the same car that after the fuel tank was pulled for inspection, Yunick was able to start up and drive away because of a fuel line designed for extra capacity. Brad
Re: [Chevelle-list] Nascar Chevelle?
I think he ran 150 feet of 1.5 inch fuel line, giving him an extra 2 gallons of fuel. He drove the car home four miles with the fuel cell removed. That's what I read anyways. Re: [Chevelle-list] Nascar Chevelle?
I read it was the 68 he drove home without the fuel cell. According to Hot Rod Magazine, Smokey's ongoing troubles with NASCAR over his getting competitive reached its zenith in 1968. Yunick blamed both Ford and Chrysler for putting so much pressure on France that he had his tech inspectors overscrutinize his super- slippery Chevelles. Legend has it that when Smokey's '68 Chevelle picked up its sixteenth violation, he got in the car and drove it back to his garage in Daytona with the fuel tank still sitting in the inspection area. His parting shot was, make it 17. Two years later, Smokey said adios to NASCAR and was out of stock car racing. Dale Sr's first asphalt win was in a '64 Chevelle--not sure if it was NASCAR or not.
