If your rear end is sound and you do not want to rebuild the Powertrax is the way to go. A one day job with no special tools. http://www.richmondgear.com/powertrax/lockright.html If you want to change gears do a complete rebuild Eaton last longer than Auburns in my experience. This will cost you twice as much in parts and labor. Plus you may need to pull the whole rear. [Chevelle-list] Posi?
Thanks everyone for the info. Looks like I'm going with 3:73. Jimmy
Re: [Chevelle-list] Posi?
I have a 3:55 in my 70 Malibu and it is working great for me. I have a 700R4 with a lockout converter and with the 3:55 at 60 I am running around 2200 rpm and on the Hot Rod Power Tour I got 19mpg on the open road. I haven't dyno'ed the engine yet but am definitely above 400hp. The car really jumps off the line if I want to get on it as well. My suggestion 3:55. Chuck Speake 1970 Chevelle Malibu Glen Ellyn, IL. Re: [Chevelle-list] Posi?
Number 1 if you have a 4.56 rear now, you will also have to change your carrier to a 3 series carries (you now have a 4 series). If your going to stay in town with a turbo 400 a 3.73 would be OK but if your going to cruise on the open road you should consider a 3.30 gear ratio. The 396 has plenty of torque even with the higher ratios - Original Message - From: Smith, James L. To: chevelle-list@chevelles.net Sent: Tuesday, July 29, 2008 1:29 PM Subject: [Chevelle-list] Posi? I have 3.31 gears in my elky wish they were just a little bit lower (?) I think 3.55 would be perfect. They told me with the 700R4 they wanted me to be hitting 2000 RPM's at 70 MPH. We ran the math and with the large Michelins I have a 3:73 works perfect! My question is what brand or style of posi? As is, the truck will burn 250 feet of rubber and make a 10 Ft mark in second! It has an LT1 in the 46 pickup and it is light! If I'm going to spring for the bucks, I want to do it right once! I have a 72 Chevelle with a 468 with an 8-71 BDS blower putting out 700+ HP. I have a turbo 400 race prepped and a 12 bolt with the C clips removed and Ford ends welded on, with an Eaton posi with 3:73 gears in it. I haven't run it yet to see if the posi will hold up! GM part # 1052271 80W-90 Rear axle lube. GM part # 1052358 Limited slip differential lube additive. The additive is used with the rear axle lube is severe cases where the stick slip symptom is heard. Quaker state weight of the lube is 75-90 and is green is color. Brown or dark brown color means that the fluid is burnt and needs changing, as it can no longer provide adequate lubrication for the bearings or gears. You need to change the rear fluid, and then find parking lot where you can drive in figure 8 patterns for about 10 to 20 times. This will work the new fluid into the clutch and disk plate in the posi. You may need to change the fluid again and repeat above after 500 miles. Good luck. Checked my posi rear end fluid level - it was fine as some seeped out when the plug was removed. The color was a very dark brown - is this a normal color for posi rear end lube. Everything else appears to work fine. May be I am just used to standard gear lube being light colored. Krister Meister Bloomingdale, IL '66 #'s matching

Yeah, key word additive which I know I mentioned, it still takes 90W.

Gear oil is brown. There is no specific posi gear oil, just an additive. All rears take 90W. Tom

[Chevelle-List] POSI/Headliners
Hey guys, what's the advantage of a posi over a regular one, besides smoking both tires instead of just one? Another question: When headliners are installed do they have any stuffing behind them, or are they just material stretched across the roof? - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

From an old Popular Science article posted at: http://www.ucalgary.ca/~csimpson/Articles/Antispin.html You may have driven cars with limited-slip differentials for many years. Maybe you feel they've gotten you out of spots where a standard axle would have left you stranded. Or maybe you think they don't help you much, if at all. You may even feel that the drawbacks of an antislip unit are greater than the advantages. But what do you know? It's an interesting read if you have the time. The bottom line for dry pavement: We also ran acceleration tests on dry pavement. The car with antislip won. It covered the standing quarter-mile in 14.6 seconds, against 15.2 for the other. Axle tramp and wheelspin lost the race for the car with the standard axle. When headliners are installed do they have any stuffing behind them, or are they just material stretched across the roof? Depends on the car. -- Cliff Simpson http://www.ucalgary.ca/~csimpson/ - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

smoke the tires= no forward accleration posi= better traction= more forward acceleration Rob Means be good,if not,be good at it [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Original Message - From: Paul O'Brien [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; chevelle-list [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED]; classicmercurycars [EMAIL PROTECTED]; marauders2 [EMAIL PROTECTED]; Mercury Club of Norway [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, May 01, 2002 10:01 AM Subject: [Chevelle-List] POSI/Headliners Hey guys, what's the advantage of a posi over a regular one, besides smoking both tires instead of just one? OK I knew about the one tire in the mud scenario and the traction, but are we talking about better mileage, handling, etc., etc., etc. When I was a kid, (and still a little now) I thought it was impressive to see both tires smokin. - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
