Re: [Chevelle-list] Small block lifting points
To take this a little farther...Does anyone know where the mounting points are for those factory lifting eyes that bolt to the manifold???One has one bolt and the other has 2 bolts attaching it... John Palmer 66 Malibu 327 4 speed
Re: [Chevelle-list] Small block lifting points
The 2 hole is drivers side furthest front 2 bolts on the intake and the single is the passenger side farthest rear intake bolt, right by the distributor. - Original Message From: John [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: The Chevelle Mailing List chevelle-list@chevelles.net Sent: Sunday, November 11, 2007 8:30:24 AM Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] Small block lifting points To take this a little farther...Does anyone know where the mounting points are for those factory lifting eyes that bolt to the manifold???One has one bolt and the other has 2 bolts attaching it... Re: [Chevelle-list] Small block lifting points
Where do you attach to a 64 283 to lift engine and tranny as a unit? I've only done a V-8 once! I think I usedtwo intake manifold bolt holes but thought I'd ask. Is it worth buying an engine tilter? Thanks for responses.I checked the 64 shop manual and they had a lifting tool shown in special tools section, though no picture in use. It says remove rocker arm covers for both six and V-8, so lookslike you had to remove headbolts. ( which doesn't seem like a good idea to me)Anyhow, for the 6 cyls I use a manifold mounting bolt in back and the ground cable attaching point in front. I have a chain I use just for lifting engines that has linksmarked for engine alone and engine with tranny attached.I position the floor jack underneath car to act as "landing zone" for tranny, and then it will roll as necessary as eng/tranny assembly is lowered down and to the rear.(the tricky partto the six cyl is that it's long enough to make it an issue getting tranny past firewall and at same time getting harmonic damper past radiator support.)Still thinking about the tilter.Pete

A dumb question maybe:Where do you attach to a 64 283 to lift engine and tranny as a unit?I've only done a V-8 once!I think I usedtwo intake manifold bolt holes but thought I'd ask.Is it worth buying an engine tilter? Thanks.Pete
Re: [Chevelle-list] Small block lifting points
I always use a tranny bolt, towards the top of course, and a head bolt at the opposite corner. The leveler/stabilizer would be nice though I have never used one and do this at least annually. chevelle292wagon dejazzd.com wrote: A dumb question maybe: Where do you attach to a 64 283 to lift engine and tranny as a unit? Re: [Chevelle-list] Small block lifting points
I'm sure everyone has their preference. When I pulled my 396 and 4-speed in one piece I used the two top water pump bolt holes and two upper bell housing bolt holes (longer bolts of course). Since I did it myself and still had the front doghouse on the car I invested in a tilter. Made a big difference when it came time to reinstall the engine/trans as well. Maybe with 2-4 helpers a tilter isn't necessary since there are more hands to help tilt and maneuver the engine/trans but it was a good investment for me. I installed my 454 with the 4spd attached, with the front clip installed, just minus the hood. I did it by myself, with an engine tilter. It makes a big difference. -Original Message- From: Dale [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 'The Chevelle Mailing List' chevelle-list@chevelles.net Sent: Fri, 9 Nov 2007 7:50 am Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] Small block lifting points I’m sure everyone has their preference. Re: [Chevelle-list] Small block lifting points
I have a lifting plate that bolts to the intake manifold in place of the carburetor with the three holes in the vertical plate. I use the rear hole if the transmission is to be removed with the engine. I have removed small block and big block, manual and automatic transmissions in 'A', 'F' and 'B' body's with and without the hoods installed. The engine lift plate has never failed in the 15 years that I have used it. I have removed the distributor before removal and install it after the engine and transmission are in place. Also use a slip yoke in the transmission and not a plastic plug while removing or installing. I have found that the plastic plug can be dislodged if in contact with firewall. Also use a floor jack under the transmission to lift to remove and replace rear cross member for transmission mount. This operation has worked good for quick and safe removal and installation. Re: [Chevelle-list] Small block lifting points
Hi Pete, Longer manifold or head bolts at front and rear will work. New crate engines come with lifting tabs that bolt to holes on the front of the head on driver side and back of the head on passenger side. Pulling engine and trans together is the best way and the tilt mechanism makes it much easier. Re: [Chevelle-list] Small block lifting points
I need to do the same on my 68. I am a one man operation as well. What if one were to leave the front wheels on the ground and jack the back wheels up on jack stands when re-installing the engine/trans combo ? I can see the advantage when installing, but thinking about this when pulling the engine..not too sure...
Re: [Chevelle-list] Small block lifting points
I put the motor and Transmissin in and out several times while working on the tunnel. It's easy but what I do is put the front of the car on 4x4 or 4x6 blocks and the rear on jack stands and the drive train slides in very well. you will be pleasantly supprised. mike - Original Message From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: chevelle-list@chevelles.net Sent: Friday, November 9, 2007 9:58:17 AM Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] Small block lifting points I installed my 454 with the 4spd attached, with the front clip installed, just minus the hood.
