Re: [Chevelle-list] powertrax

2007-06-17 Thread KW
I had one in a (short wheel base) 4X4. I hated it.
Chatter, drivability issues. One time it unlocked on a long, straight,
steep hill climb(!!) I thought I had broken an axle!! Parking lots were a
nightmare (due to the ratcheting of the unit). Sometimes the locker would just
unlock...for no real reason! Driving at 45 mph on a straight paved road, the
unit "unlocks" and the rear end sway's hard to one side...NOT FUN
As a matter of fact, it was so bad that I stopped driving the truck on the road
for over a year, finally I pulled it and replaced it with an air locker.

My opinion... buy a real locker.

I don't care for them. A buddy had one in his Camaro. Chewed the back tires
up really bad, and didn't reliably engage, and pretty noisy.
He ended up taking it out and replacing it.

When I first put mine in I didn't have the one shim behind the one side and it
was noisy and didn't engage right. I had to get a new shim because it was beat
up really bad from too many one wheel peals in the rear ends life. When I put
it back with a shim on both sides, no noise and works good

Going to try this week with the new 336 gears not the 273 I had in when I tried

2005-12-21 Thread Joe LaRovere

I made the mistake of buying a new style powertrax for my
diff after I blew up the spider gears.  These are only available for open
style diffs and not the posi diffs.  Mine is a posi and their web site and
ordering is not clear on this.  I was quite disappointed and ended up
putting in an Auburn Pro series posi unit.  I  believe I ordered it
from Summit and they took it back no questions asked.  There was a feature
on Hot Rod TV where they swapped in one for a chevy real.  I recorded it on
DVR and used it when I attempted to install mine, they didn't mention the open
diff thing either.  They gave it high marks.

I remember a couple of weeks back, there was a
thread concerning Powertrax. I remember reading negative comments, basically
excessive tire wear and ratcheting (popping) noise while in tight
  turns.

I'm curious if the discussion was about the older
Powertrax Lock Right product, or their new, supposedly more streetable Extreme
  Traction Systems, which they claim:

"Spool performance when coming off the line and full wheel
differentiation in the turns. Whether your vehicle is driven everyday or just
on the weekends, POWERTRAX® EXTREME TRACTION SYSTEM's
combination of maximum traction and smooth quiet operation will make you a
  winner."

I've seen some favorable reviews on this, and
  wanted to get your thoughts...

And they are VERY hard on tires.  My buddy's tires had chunks ripped
out from it locking during turns.
I personally would not use one in my car.

correctly and all tolerances were within specs.
The locker was "twitchy" on the
road, you could be driving along in a straight line and it would unlock
shifting the rear end hard left. The locker would ratchet and pop in
slow tight turns and cause a loud booming sound, It sounded like it was
ripping out the ring gear or breaking an axle and that was with the
factory 6 cylinder. I kept it in less than 5000 miles and the teeth on
the locker were shredded.
I will say this, Powertrax has great
customer service, they replaced the complete locker even though it was
over a year old, no questions asked.
