Both OE and repros are anodized aluminum. The quality of the repros leaves
something to be desired, however. I certainly prefer to use original GM
whenever possible, even though the cost is substantially higher and they're
more difficult to locate. BTW, the '68 SS396 did not have w/o moldings
installed at the factory.

The OEM wheel well moldings are stainless steel. The repros are plated tin.
They are definitely softer than the OEM moldings. No body seems to be
repro-ing short wheel moldings for the 68 SS.

FWIW, Just to toss some more fuel on the fire, I checked my GM P&A book
and my CD from Detroit Iron and found the following:

>> I
>> believe they (the '68 moldings) are a one year only part.
>> Here are the numbers listed in the assembly manual:
>>
>> 3920149-50 Molding L. & R.H. 13735-45

Model 13735 is a Concours wagon 6-cyl (13835 is a Concours V-8) but I
don't show a model number 13745 anything in either my GM model reference
chart or my Chevelle deciphering program.

>> 3920153-4 Molding L. & R.H. 13500-600 13837-67-80

Model numbers 13500-13600 are "generic" meaning any Chevelle or Malibu
(135xx and 136xx) while the 13837-67-80 are SS specific. This coincides
with the data from my GM P&A book although the part numbers are
different and that could just be numbers that often get superceded.

My book shows for the front in 8.132 group:
68 Concours - 3928435/436 L.H./R.H. MOULDING UNIT, wheelhouse opening
68 Malibu - 3955683/684 L.H./R.H. MOULDING UNIT, wheel opening (38")

And rear 12.116 group:
68 Concours - 7795053/054 L.H./R.H. rear wheel opening
68 Malibu (Spt. Sed.) - 7795076/077 L.H./R.H. rear wheel opening

I'd almost bet that if you found a P&A book from say 75-76 era that went
back to 68 listings, the part numbers would be different still.

My paper copy is from the 71/72 era so it's definitely older.

That's entirely possible I guess that Canadian built Chevelles might
have more models. The more I think about, they probably do. I have
pictures on my site of a Canadian 67 300 Deluxe convertible - no such
animal offered in the U.S.

John,

It appears as though the wheel open moldings are the same front or back.
The only difference being which side of the vehicle, left or right. Sounds
strange, but that is what I gathered from my GM parts manuals (8.132). So,
if the guy has an '68 SS Chevelle then he would need:
 (2) 3920153 L.H.
 (2) 3920154 R.H.

John,

According to my factory assembly manual for 1968 Chevelle and El Camino,
there are wheel well moldings for the 1968 Chevelles. They appear to "end"
right at the point of intersection with the moldings running down the sides.
Making them shorter than the 1969 Chevelle wheel house moldings. I believe
they (the '68 moldings) are a one year only part. Here are the numbers
listed in the assembly manual:

3920149-50 Molding L. & R.H. 13735-45

3920153-4 Molding L. & R.H. 13500-600 13837-67-80

I just had a request from a guy looking for wheel well moldings for a 1968
SS Chevelle. He says that the SS moldings are shorter than the non-SS, and
that they only go as far down as the side body moldings. Well, I'm certainly
not an expert on the 68 SS, but I've never heard of any SS-only wheel well
moldings for that year. If anybody has a part number for such moldings, or
can confirm or deny their existence, I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

I was told recently by a friend of mine that the '68 SS did NOT come with the chrome
wheel moldings. Guys like to put them on for the look... maybe they cut them off from
a '69. In '69 they did come with the moldings. Maybe that's why there is no listing
