Re: [Chevelle-List] 327 cam question (nothing complex)

2003-01-15 Thread Capt Crunch
You gonna run headers or have plans for a rpm intake? If you are running headers, and plan a few more mods in the future I would go with a dual grind cam that will aid a bit in clearing the exhaust out, but you need to be carefully with your lobe profiles. I like the Comp Cam lines a bit over the Cranes, but either a CC Dual or XE (more aggressive lift numbers and profiles... sometimes experience a louder valve noise then other cams) grind will work with minimal difference from a Crane Powermax. Something like their 260 grind should work well for all around performance.    Shoot out some more info on the above questions and the ones below and I will try and help you out. -What compression ratio are you running? -What octane level of gas do you want to run? -what gears you running?   Keep in mind you can select a cam and also install it retarded or advanced a bit to move your torque peak. Advancing it will take your torque peak down about 200 rpm from the stock grind. Overlap will be a key issue for idle and power... as will your selections lsa. A wider lsa (112) will provide a larger powerband generally and overlap will determine your idle and DYNAMIC compression ratio (which determines the gas you can run and power... aim for 8to1)  If you want to keep it simple I would go with a 260 type dual pattern cam... You may want to invest in a 2 piece timing cover so you can change the cam position easily if so desired. Desktop dyno is also a good ESTIMATOR of what retarding or advancing a cam will do.   Overall the right cam can be tricky to pick out... may people just pick a grind in a couple minutes... others take hours computing numbers and scenarios... you can probably guess who is the guy that is saying "Joe has the same combo as me, but his car is so much faster and runs out so much better then mine... What gives?"   Mikey      - Original Message - From: Mabs, Kenneth Sent: Wednesday, January 15, 2003 10:56 AM To: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' Subject: RE: [Chevelle-List] 327 cam question (nothing complex)  i believe the duration on that fireball cam was 228.  or was that the compcam with the same lift?h-Original Message-From: Danny Wilsher [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]Sent: Wednesday, January 15, 2003 12:10 PMTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]Subject: Re: [Chevelle-List] 327 cam question (nothing complex)Jim,    I built a really sweet 327 about 15 to 18 years ago and I used a CraneFireball cam. Jim,
I built a really sweet 327 about 15 to 18 years ago and I used a Crane
Fireball cam. It had 455 lift on both intake and exhaust and I can't tell
you what the duration was. But it ran really good with just a slight lope
and it had plenty of low end umph. If you are going to drive this 327 a
bunch, this or maybe the one that was suggested by someone else would put
you in the ball park with something you would be happy with.

Re: [Chevelle-List] 327 cam question (nothing complex)

2003-01-15 Thread bdo_chevelle
The stock cam is .390/410 195/202. One of the popular aftermarket grinds
is .420/443 204/214 and I see no reason why this wouldn't work in your 327.
