Re: [Chevelle-List] Brake Cylinders
Shebang! John Nasta nailed it! It is gear lube. So I topped it off with my favorite Valvoline 90 wt and took it for a ride. Now I notice the outer axle bearings making funny noises too. Gonna do bearings and seals. Great advice from this list! Even on getting brake cylinders. I like this list, Chuck According to John Nasta: Brad is right. You can usually get wheel cylinders at any NAPA store. Also, make sure it's not gear oil leaking out due to a bad wheel bearing/seal. You can pop the seal out and if it looks out of round at all in the inner diameter, you can be sure the bearing is bad too. Buy some brake cleaner to clean the gooped up parts, and if the brake pads are badly soaked, you're best off to replace them too. Wheel cylinders and wheel bearings are both pretty easy to do, but even easier if done at the same time, because both jobs require dismantling all the brake hardware. Neither is a particularly expensive job either. You may just want to go ahead and do the whole shebang while you're in there. John Nasta -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Malibu65 Subject: [Chevelle-List] Brake Cylinders I just noticed brake fluid running down from my right rear back plate. I think just replacing the rear cylinders and flex lines should be good enough for now. The fronts appear to be ok. Does anyone have any recomendations on where to get good Chevelle brake parts? Actually, you might be surprised that you can find good parts at a local auto parts shop. Make a few phone calls and see if they have the parts, and if they carry AC Delco (or a good brand) parts in stock. It has been years since I had to do this, but I found cylinders at the first local parts place I went to. RE: [Chevelle-List] Brake Cylinders
Could be gear oil leaking out rather than brake fluid. See my other post on this. John Nasta -Original Message- I just noticed brake fluid running down from my right rear back plate. Shebang, I was going to use that word one time, but I didn't know how to spell it. That looks about right. RE: [Chevelle-List] Brake Cylinders
Chuck Make sure it is brake fluid first. If you spray water on it and it turns a milky white, it's brake fluid. If it don't and feels oily it a good possibility that it could be differential fluid. Then you know what repairs to make. Calling around to your local parts houses will probably show you the parts you need are available locally. Just try to stay with brand name parts. Good Luck Wayne 66 Malibu I just noticed brake fluid running down from my right rear back plate. (If that's what it's called) :-{ The strange thing is I didn't notice a spongy or low petal at all. RE: [Chevelle-List] Brake Cylinders
Hey Chuck, Try your local parts store for standard brake parts. You'd be surprised at what stuff is still available over the counter. Just in the past year and a half, I bought a bunch of drum brake parts for my '72 El Camino and a master cylinder for my '70 Chevelle at the local places. -Dave -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Malibu65 Sent: Friday, September 27, 2002 2:27 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Chevelle-List] Brake Cylinders I just noticed brake fluid running down from my right rear back plate. I have plans for a split master cylinder and disc brakes for the front in the near future, so I think just replacing the rear cylinders and flex lines should be good enough for now. The fronts appear to be ok. Does anyone have any recomendations on where to get good Chevelle brake parts? Guess I'll be searchin' through the good ol' Chevelle parts pages like OCN and True Connect etc... I used to get new cylinders instead of honing and replacing the rubber cups in the past. These must be 20 years old! I think this list is great!
