Hey, I can answer this! I found a great Q-Jet tuning paper at this
great page of reference papers:
http://www.corvettefaq.com/engine.asp

Or, to download it directly, click here:
http://www.corvettefaq.com/c3/QJet_Tuning_Paper.doc

It decodes your carb as:
70 Pre-1976 Q-Jet
42 1972 is the exact year
2 49-State Carburetor
1 Chevrolet
0 Automatic Transmission

This is as far as the paper decodes, but...
QE Sorry, no idea
0872 Don't know, but I would guess August, 1972?

Jeff,

I don't see your particular carb. in the book. The book is more about
rebuilding and modifying q-jets than identifying them. It does have exploded
diagrams of the 4G/4GC (used from 1952-67), the M4ME (1981-86), the E4MED
(1985-86), the E4ME (1981-86), and several 2bbls monojet carbs. It also
goes into great detail about metering, jetting, and other ways to modify a
Q-jet for max performance for your car. For instance, you can figure out the
max air flow requirement of your engine by ((CID x max-RPM) / 3456) x
volumetric efficiency. So, if you 350 w/ a max RPM of 7000 and 100%
volumetric efficiency, the formula is ((350 x 7000) / 3456) x1 = 709 cfm.
This is a great book. Everybody who likes to work on their own Q-jet should
own a copy IMO. Rochester Carburetors ISBN 0-89586-301-4 by Doug Roe /
Berkley Publishing.

I also have an exploded diagram of the 4MV, which is probably what you have
(and is not in this book). I posted it at:

http://johnnasta.com/6898/resources/1968/carb-4mv.jpg

if anybody is interested.

For the IE6 users, there is a new feature that automatically downsizes the
image to fit your screen. If you put your mouse over the image, you will get
an icon that looks like a box with arrows coming out of the corners. If you
click that icon, it will expand the image to full size. It's hard to read if
you don't expand it.

Seems like every time Microsoft makes their software automatically do
something, I have to spend an hour figuring out how to disable the wonderful
new feature. That's a topic for another list though...

Jeff...

Your Carb # is 7042210QE 0872

1972 Quadra-Jet installed in a Chevy Automatic according to this chart
http://www.weber-carburetors.com/quadnumber.htm

For your vacuum lines ...on my Q-jet the front one you have circled goes
to the distributor vacuum advance and the second one on the side of the
choke on mine is blocked off but the Q-jet literature I have says it goes
to the air cleaner assmbley arrestor (mine doesn't have one so it is blocked
off).

Hope this helps.

Ok, got the carb back and does it look nice. As far as the carb number,
that is a little baffling to me as there are numbers all over the damn
thing. Here are a couple possibilities, 42742 and 7042210QE 0872 If
neither of these are the correct number, any hints where the carb number is
located would be helpful. On the front of the carb there is a vacuum port
that was blocked up with rubber hose and a screw in it. The guy at the carb
shop suspected it went to the distributor but that is piped off the side.
Any ideas on what is might be for? Here is a picture of it,
http://people.mn.mediaone.net/addss/plugport.jpg
http://people.mn.mediaone.net/addss/unkport.jpg Also I noticed a small
pigtail clip just hanging in the air that is coming from a small condenser
looking thing mounted to the back of the coil, here is a pic of it, hope
you can see it. http://people.mn.mediaone.net/addss/pigtail.jpg

This pic shows the lower or closest port running off to the distributor and
on the front the plugged up port
http://people.mn.mediaone.net/addss/vacport1.jpg
Where should this go? Amazing the car runs with all this stuff
disconnected or mickey moused!

In the service manual I can only find them torqueing down a different
looking carb where they say to tighten all bolts first to 36 in. lbs. then
finish tightening to 144 in. Lbs. Does this sound correct?

Jeff, 7042210 indicates a '72 application but I don't
know the specifics off the top of my head. It's
possible that 1 vacuum port in question is manifold
vacuum and the other is ported; hook a vacuum gauge to
each with the engine running at idle and the throttle
blades closed. If it's manifold vacuum you'll get a
high reading and ported vacuum will give a very low
reading. You can use either for your advance as they're
nearly identical once the throttle blades open; use
whichever your engine likes best.

The torque specs sound good but I'm not sure about that
pigtail thingy, though. ;^)

7042210 is the correct Q-Jet for a '72 Chevy/GMC half-
ton with a 350 CID V-8 and automatic transmission, and
set up for federal (non-CA) emissions standards.

Correct carb for your '71 454/4spd is 7041201, but if
you're more concerned about functionality the Q-Jet you
have can be made to work. Good luck!

Jeff I just put a new Q-jet and choke assembly on the Malibu and the hole
you have it in is the correct one .the other hole on mine is for
linkage that is used by the vacuum break diaphragm spring , your vacuum
break is set up differently than mine but the choke linkage is the same.

Since the temps here in Minnesota have risen to almost 50° and I can't
snowmobile, thought I would play a little with the Chevelle. Took the
Q-Jet off and took in to have cleaned and rebuilt and noticed that the rod
that goes from the choke coiled spring on the manifold to the carb was off
and laying on top of the engine. Looked in the Service manual and can't see
a clear picture of where exactly this rod attaches to the side of the carb.
There are two possibilities. I have posted pictures of the choke here

http://people.mn.mediaone.net/addss/carb1.jpg

http://people.mn.mediaone.net/addss/carb2.jpg

Also the pictures of this coiled choke spring look different in the book
and I am wondering if I have the stock choke coil and carb? In the
pictures you will see that I hung the top of the rod in the closest hole
but there is another hole just to the right. Which one? Also would
appreciate steps for setting/adjusting the choke so I can get it right when
the carb comes back in a few days.

Thanks much for the help.
