Re: [Chevelle-List] Four Speed to Automatic (ATTN: Kent)
GOT IT! I had a friend at work go see an engineer he knows that is a pack rat. Saved everything for the past 35 years. He's getting ready to retire and I sure would like to talk him in to giving me his stuff. We'll see. But this is what I've been able to find out. It's not much but at least you'll know something about it. Your trans was installed in a Chevy or GMC pick-me-up. It was backed up by a 350 c.i.d. engine. Probably 255 horse power with a four barrel. Hope this helps you. Very good trans and VERY upgradeable. A simple change of wave plates and a couple of other parts and you got a trans that will handle lots of power. If your interested let me know. I'll tell you what you need. Re: [Chevelle-List] Four Speed to Automatic
You need to measure the tail stock of the new trans then measure the tail stock of the one that came out of it and subtract the difference. If the trans is in the car measure from the output shaft to the yoke of the the differential and add I think 4". The place you will measure the tail stock from is the trans. mount where it bolts to the frame to the tip of the output shaft. RE: [Chevelle-List] Four Speed to Automatic
I do not know if a TH400 and a manual trans are the same length. I started with a 400 and went to a 700. No reputable shop will tell you the size of shaft you need :) Too risky for them. They will tell you to measure from yoke center to yoke center and bring them a number. They can make a shaft the exact length that you specify. IMO it is not easy getting this measurement. I took mine while the rear suspension was hanging. I measured three times but somehow when the shaft was put on it is about 1" too short. Mine will probably work like it is initially, but I intend to have the shop lengthen it or I will get another shaft and have it shortened to the correct length. My suspension is fully extended yet, with new springs, gas charged shocks, and polygraphite bushings. If the back end sags or sits down a bit after some use that will locate the drive shaft farther onto the trans output spline. If you found someone with the transmission setup you want, you could measure the shaft on their car and it would probably be ok. Good luck. Re: [Chevelle-List] Four Speed to Automatic
Lojac,Don't bet on not massaging the drive shaft. The 350 and 400 came with a short and long tail shaft. The 350 WILL handle a big block but it has to be in good condition. But I wouldn't recommend it unless it was rebuilt for your application. And the torque converter must match the torque of the engine. The 350 has 4 multi - disc clutches and 2 roller clutches. The 400 is the best choice. It has 3 multi - disc clutches, 1 one-way clutch and 1 roller clutch, detent solenoid, and vacuum modulator to sense engine torque controlling line pressure. This alone makes it better over the 350. All torque requirements are met and you get the right shift points. Look for these codes on the 400 1968 396 - CA 427 - CB 396 - CC ( Chevelle/Camaro) 396 - CH ( high performance) 396 - CH 1969 396 - CA 427 / 390 HP - CB 396 / 325 HP - CC 396 / 350 HP - CE (Chevelle/Camaro 427 / 335 HP - CF AlsoCG, CH, CL, CQ, and CY and the famous 350 - 300 HP Vette.. CK 1970.. CB,(454) CG (police 454), CR. 1971.. CB, CF, CS and CY. 1972.. CD,(402), CF(454) CR and CS. 1973.. CR and CS. These are all big block 400's. If you have a code you can't figure out I'll be glad to help. I have worked at GM Hydra-matic for the past 28 years. If I don't know the answer I can find out for you. One last comment, and this is my opinion only. The 350 was and still is a great transmission. It just wasn't built to take the torque of the muscle era. If you want a trouble free cruiser it can't be beat. If you pick a fairly common combo your engine shop or other BBC drivers might be able to give you a good guesstimate. Make sure the TH350 or TH400 you get has the Chevy bolt pattern and not the BOP pattern. The Chevy pattern features a peak ("^" shape) at the top of the housing while the BOP pattern is bowed between the 2 top bolt holes. Re: [Chevelle-List] Four Speed to Automatic
I am planning on rebuilding the engine and I am not sure how much torque I am going to end up getting. SO you say I should go with the TH400 eventhough I have to shorten the driveshaft. I was hoping for a little easier installation than that. Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List I haven't followed all the msgs closely , but IF you are going with the 400 - i believe that they have an electric kickdown system - hadn't seen any mention of that.IF you are going with a 700 - they have electric lockup for the torque converter. I've got links that may help with the wiring. 400 & 700 are close to the same length. If you need to shorten drive shaft for one, the other will need it too. A 700 can withstand a mild big block on the street, especially a mostly cruiser only.If you want to use tires that will hook you up, the 700 will not last too long unless its built by a pro. Is this an easy swap or complicated? I have been doing some reading on the web about having to shorten the drive shaft because of the length of the TH400. Is this true? I was also wanting to use a TH700is this any different from doing the swap with the TH400???
