Re: [Chevelle-list] Tire Balancing
I have never balanced tires, but I did balance machinery, turbines, compressors , pump impellers in a machine shop. The machine balances in right and left planes, it tells where and what side to place or take off weight, double plane balancing. Then there is single plane where you divide the weight and put it in same place on opposite sides. Hope this helps. Darrell
Re: [Chevelle-list] Tire Balancing
Thanks guys. I'll check the other tires to see if there are any inside weights anywhere. The tires were purchased/mounted/balanced at Sam's Club. Maybe that's what it called for on that particular tire. I'll let you know what I find. Many, many things have changed since I worked in a service garage. When we balanced tires we split the weight needed between both sides of the wheel. If it took called for a one ounce weight we put a half ounce on each side of the tire/wheel at the specified spot. I was instructed that weights on only one side would balance the wheel centrifugally, but not dynamically. This past week my wife got new tires on her car and I noticed a large weight on one of the tires. I reached behind to the back side and there was no other weight. Is this a new finding that they only need to put the weights on one side of the wheel?? Thanks

Re: [Chevelle-list] Tire Balancing
I have seen it both ways. Putting them on both sides is better, but doing it the easy way on one side only still works OK for a passenger car. The tire machine at the shop I use tells them which side to put the weight on. For any performance application I would go to a shop that put weights on both sides. Re: [Chevelle-List] Tire Balancing
I just got back from a trip to the local BFGoodrich dealer. He said there was so many weights they were counter-balancing each other. They took all the weights off, respun the tires and added much fewer weights. Riding ok so far, so hope that'll do the trick, but the balancing is tested only up to 55-60MPH. The real test will be when I get it back on the Jersey Turnpike on Monday.
Re: [Chevelle-List] Tire Balancing
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Speaking of mounting & balancing, I have at times taken some used tires and mounted them myself on rims I have lying around. I have a tire mount machine in my garage. I did this when I ran the 70 and my 86 Cutlass at the track. I drove the car there and home, and even to work a few days b/c I didn't have time to change them. I never had a problem with vibration. All i did was remove all the weights that were on the rim, mount the tire, air it up, put it on the car, and race all night. No vibrations upward of 120 mph (trap speed was actually 113 mph) on the chevelle. I've mounted I say about 10 pairs (20 total tires) in my garage without having them balanced. Re: [Chevelle-List] Tire Balancing
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List As a former Good Year tire buster, if a tire balance required that much weight, we would bust the tire down - rotate it a 1/4 turn and try the spin balance again. We also did this for guys buying High Performance tires and wanting to travel at high speeds. Some tires took no weights with this trill and error method. Re: [Chevelle-List] Tire Balancing
Sounds like the tires are beat, I'd go get some new ones. The vibration can be caused by them being abnormally worn, or just worn out in general. I've seen bent rims on occasion too. Just something else to look out for. Tom
RE: [Chevelle-List] Tire Balancing
I don't know how it is with radials, but back in the bias ply tire days when I was doing alignments, once a car was out of alignment and tire wear started, aligning it did not resolve the tire wear. Check for any additional abnormal wear on the tires - it could be making them go out of round. Sounds like a belt has shifted. Get new tires. The life you save may be your own. Re: [Chevelle-List] Tire Balancing
If you spun the tires, the tires might have rotated on the rims and now it is out of balance again.
