John,
Did you get the battery checked?
Also is the flasher slow with car running or off, or both?
Hopefully they still make the HD flasher which doesn't care how many bulbs are in
circuit. In the old days you could put wrong flasher in and turnsignals would flash
slow or fast; and even right flasher would stop if a bulb went out.
I always check turn signals with parking lights on as this uncovers problems you might
not see doing lights and turn signals seperately; ie: socket problems, bulbs in wrong,
bad filaments; etc.
(1157 bulbs have two filaments and never should they meet!)
Good luck!

Battery is fine.

Blinkers also working fine now w/ a new flasher ($1.85 retail).

Got my exhaust pipe leaks re-welded today and they are fine now. There's
still a small leak at the heat riser. I can't really tell if it's the riser
or just the gasket. I'll try just the gasket first since it is much cheaper.

Still haven't had a chance to trace down the short though. Little by little
I'm getting to all the nuisance problemitos. Hoping to install the seat
belts for real tomorrow. Right now they are just tucked into the seat for
visual purposes to avoid a ticket if stopped.

Hmm that reminds me, I suppose driving back and forth from work with only
one seat, bolted down with two bolts and no seat belts might be in violation

No radio (but maybe the power lead is just laying against something). No
electric choke or tach. Glovebox light bulb is burnt out. All other lights
seem to be ok.

Here are a couple of new observations:

My speedometer has 2 needles on it. A red one that tells me how fast I'm
going, and a white one that seems to be pinned at 120 mph. What is the white
one for?

Also, my blinkers are raaallly slow. So slow in fact that I tend to
flash them by hand so that people will realize that I'm turning and it's not
just an intermittent light bulb. They stay on for a long time and only flash
off every couple of seconds. I bought a new flasher and popped it in for a
few seconds and it didn't seem to make a difference. What else could be
causing this? Turn signal switch?

I'm about to go out and adjust the valves. Hopefully I'll get rid of that
annoying tap and only hear the Flowmaster 50s from now on.

Thanks,

You must have the Speed Minder option--a buzzer will go off when you
exceed the speed that you set with the white needle. This is a relatively
rare option.

Where did you plug in the flasher? If you plugged it into the fuse block,
you did wrong. The T/S flasher is under the dash.

Is there a knob under the speedo cluster? This sounds like a speed
warning feature GM had. I don't know when they stopped or if the
Chevelle line even had them, but I had a '67 Corvette with this option.
There was a small knob that you could adjust to set the needle to, and
when you exceeded this speed a buzzer would go off warning you to slow
down.

Also, my blinkers are raaallly slow.

Check the bulbs. Are they all working? If you swapped the flasher
unit, then it implies that the load is not right. Maybe this is related
to your short? Worst case, you can buy an electronic (not load based)
flasher.

I'm about to go out and adjust the valves. Hopefully I'll get rid of
that annoying tap and only hear the Flowmaster 50s from now on.

It may be too late, but exhaust leaks often sound like tappet noise. If
your lifters are all OK, check the exhaust for leaks. I use a three
foot length of heater hose as my ear to locate engine sounds. It
works great for exhaust leaks as you can point it close to the head,
flange, pipes, and joint to locate any leak. I had a pair of Hedmans
replaced for free due to a leak where the tube met the flange.

The directional problems may be caused by poor grounds. You need
to check all of the light grounds and make certain that they are clean
tight. No corrosion or paint between the wire eyelet the metal.
You can use light sand paper to clean the corrosion/paint.Also be
sure that you have the correct bulbs in the sockets. People have
been known to make a single filament bulb fit in a dual filament
socket - and vice-versa.

RE: [Chevelle-list] Got a short new q's

2004-09-29 Thread John Nasta
Thanks for the info about the speed minder. Didn't even know that existed in
Chevelles or El Caminos. I guess I'll have to try not to go over 120 mph or
I'll hear that annoying buzzer. Also, you were right that I replaced the
wrong flasher. Will try replacing the right one tomorrow. All the bulbs,
bezels and wiring is new. Also, they do flash, just slowly. So, I don't
think it's a ground or power problem. If that were the case they wouldn't
work at all, or at the very least the behavior would be intermittent.

In the meantime, what's the sound of no valves tapping? Well, it's a good
sound. I also adjusted the carb after adjusting the valves and she is
purring like a kitten now. Hopefully we'll also get some better MPGs. She's
quiet enough now (w/o the tapping and w/ a smoother idle) that I was able to
hear an exhaust leak where the shop welded my down pipes to the Flowmaster
pipes. Put my hand in there and sure enough exhaust is escaping. I'm going
to call them first thing tomorrow to see if they can fix it right this time.

I didn't have a chance to check for the short today but for now
disconnecting the battery when I'm shutting down is enough to keep the
battery from draining. Thanks for all the input. I'll post again when I've
had a chance to try to track it down.
