Dan…I sure am tempted to get my car painted metal flake. It’ll
be this fall before I make the commitment, but want to find out if there are
any major problems. I need to find a good paint shop in Houston!!

Alot of lowriders still use flake.

I just painted a motorcycle solid red flake.  Took
about 12 coats of clear to bury it all enough to be wetsanded out.  It
looks absolutely amazing though.

House of Kolor has a very nice selection of flakes, as does
OSF (Old School Flake)

Good luck!

Metal flake takes A LOT more work to hand sand after it has been applied.
I did a 68 Camaro while in high school with a black base and blue/green
metal flake on top.   It looked green/black during the day and
blue/black at
night.   Kind of weird.

Scott,

Cracking is what I heard as well, but that was almost 35 to 40 years ago
for me, so surely something has to be improved, and you see many bass boats
are still metal flake!

The better ones had up to 20 coats of clear and therein is the problem.
Back then clear and sunlight did not like each other. Talk about cracking.

Looked like a 100 year old's face. On a bad day. Bet they have the problem

fixed by now.

RE: [Chevelle-list] Paint Metal Flake

2005-03-30 Thread John Nasta
My car is 1969's Dusk Blue Metallic. It's not "metal flake" per se, but the
guy who painted it complained about there being so much metal in the paint
that it tended to pool up and settle in certain areas. He also complained
about it being difficult to buff out without it looking like it had fine
scratches in it from the metal. Needless to say, the guy who painted my car
was pretty clueless and did a "half fast" job, but apparently metal flake or
metallic paint in general is tougher to get right than regular paint.
