You probably have a 300+HP motor there. The block could be 2 or 4 bolt
mains, as this block came with both and I don't know what criteria Chevy
had for doing the 4 bolts. Sounds like a "winters" casting for the
intake, but I thought they were dual plane manifolds. Do you have a
casting number and date code from the intake? We could look up some
more from that as well.

The 383 should be great in the Chevelle. Just build it for low end
torque and you will love it. 425 HP is fine, but if you can get 400-500
TQ across your useful band, you will never care what the HP is. You can
build some real thumpers that are all done by 5000 RPM that are great
for the street, and you don't have to worry about spending money on
things that only break at high RPM. Take the money you save on those
parts and use them somewhere else!

Try http://www.73-87.com/chevy_ids/scmenu2.htm as the master to find

2004-02-27 Thread 65ss.com
Well, I'm sure it's not a 165hp anymore. It has some 993 heads, a holley
street dominator (eliminator? I think dominator)single plane, the kind with
a 'snowflake' cast on it. From what I was told this is probably from a
vette, but who knows. It has a 650cfm double pumper and the cam seems
pretty lumpy (nice technical term). It has HEI, and someone has put on long
tube headers (which I'm in the process of changing, but found out I will
have to pull the motor).

I'm hoping to put in the chevy 383 crate engine with 425hp later this year,
but we'll see. It depends on how strong this engine is once I get it on the
road.

I sure do appreciate the help. I'm assuming that since it was a truck
engine that it has a 4bolt main?

Again, thanks

http://www.73-87.com/chevy_ids/scode8.htm has more detailed info, and
IDs this as a 165HP motor from 1974 or 1978. You should be able to find
a casting date that might help you figure out the year somewhere else on
the block.

It really does not matter what the engine was, unless you think it is
still original. I would bet that this was a core exchange back when the
owner blew the engine or wanted an upgrade, and then it was rebuilt to
either generic specs and sold cheaply, or built for a customer. What do
you really have? You'd have to check the cam, pistons, crank, etc. to
be sure.

What intake and heads do you have?

2004-02-27 Thread Brad Waller
Double check the C number. The "8" could be an "E", as the over the
counter replacement block from a dealer would have a "CE" prefix. My
327 replacement motor (now dead) in the Corvette was "CE8 63680 HV".
Although since I had the engine suffix as part of the CE number, and
yours is part of the factory/date stamp, your is likely out of a
vehicle.

TKR is a 350 engine from a 1980 C10, K10, C20, or K20 Truck according to

Chevy didn't start using 3-character suffixes until 1970 and 3970010 was a very common
350 casting, so my guess is that it's a 1970 or newer truck 350. I believe C80149401
is a partial VIN for the original vehicle and either the 8 or the 0 indicates model
year (again, I can't remember). Others have provided some website URLs and I can look
this up in my MSA-1 books when I get home today.

To further distill what the others have said, this looks like a 1968 truck
327. According to my MSA-1 books the 3914678 block was used from '68-79
and the YS code indicates a '66-68 truck 327. The RPO was L-77, it was
rated at 240 HP with a Q-Jet, and was attached to a manual transmission
in a 20 (3/4 ton) or 30 (1 ton) series truck. Is the casting date from
late '67 to mid '68? What heads does it have?

Danny, YS doesn't sound like a Camaro suffix to me but I'll have to check. IIRC the

number of years since I sold it but I had a 327 that was based on this casting.
Unfortunately I can't remember if it had 2.30" or 2.45" mains.

Hey man, I had the same problem with my engine. The casting numbers for it was a 283, 302, or 327. I narrowed it down by matching the numbers on the crankshaft which only went to one engine. Unfortunately it was to the 283. Hope that helps( if the motor is apart).

Danny, The engine number you are showing is telling you that
V- was built at the Flint plant,05 is the month of May, 14 should be the
day(could the I be a one?) and the YS is the engine code. None of my books show
a YS code, but that does not mean anything other than the code was not for a
body that I have info for. If someone has that info it will tell you what the
engine was, cubes,HP,comp. ratio, carb and trans.Hope this is of some use to
you.

I seems to recall reading that GM never used the
letter I in any of their castings. Too easily
confused.
