Dale, I agree 100%. It is just that because of all this "mystique", my car - a car that SHOULD cost $15k tops - costs $25k. If it wasn't for all this hoopla, I could have a second car! Thanks to mystique, I pay double for little doodads like clocks and armrests. On the other hand, when I sell all my spares, i get double what they're worth. Ah, commerce. Re: [Chevelle-List] Another Ebay LS6
"original" is a tough word - in the true sense it's something that was been untouched since it was made. A more forgiving term "restored to original" leaves the opportunity refurbish to maintain the original look. Taking something and modifying to look like something else is our familiar "clone" term or replica. Some people are fine with this - it's a knock off of the real thing, but passing it off as the real thing is where the problem lies. There is a certain value to knowing "this is what it looked like when it rolled off the line". An entire Model A can be built out of a catalog, but it wouldn't be right to call it a "survivor"?. Back to point - to many people get screwed by misrepresented cars. LOL! Yeah, life is grand. You're right - I'm must be venting a bit! I had a 66 goat when I was in HS. Back then, NOBODY left them original. The whole point in owning one was to goose it somehow. The only guys that left them untouched were the posers. Heck, the idea that GM built it correctly in the first place was like an affront to one's manhood or something! And, yes, I used to cut dashes, too. And put wheel lip flares on 67 vettes. I suppose I'll have to change my phone number now... -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:owner-chevelle-list@;chevelles.net]On Behalf Of Rozanski Joe (AP/EDC) Sent: Tuesday, October 29, 2002 10:06 AM To: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' Subject: RE: [Chevelle-List] Another Ebay LS6 Craig-you seem to be venting this morning...life ok? later, Joseph Rozanski Sr. Designer Design and Development ROBERT BOSCH CORPORATION Phone:(248)553-1495 Fax:(248)848-2991 E-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -Original Message- From: Craig A. What makes it such a bad thing to do so today? Why NOT just take an ordinary Malibu and turn it into an SS. The end result is exactly the same - 100% exactly the same - except in the mind of the owner. Personally, I don't have a problem with this. Moreover, I don't think anyone needs to explain that that is what they did. I am pretty sure my car is an original SS because I have the VIN data from GM in Canada. But let's be real - I'm in Michigan and there are more non-original parts on that car than you can shake a stick at. Fenders, inner fenders, door skins, quarter panels - even the HOOD for pete's sake. Not to mention springs, rotors, axle shafts, rear end gears, exhaust, radiator, alternator, AC pump, seat covers, shocks, bushings, tie rods, tires, wheels, pistons, cam, rockers, carb, valves, clutch, driveshaft. The whole stupid car seems to have been replaced (and I've got the receipts to prove it). But, when I dump the clutch at 4k, I can't tell if those parts are original or not - too much tire smoke to see clearly. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:owner-chevelle-list@;chevelles.net]On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, October 29, 2002 8:31 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [Chevelle-List] Another Ebay LS6 I don't think I would buy a LS6 without the original build sheet. Re: [Chevelle-List] Another Ebay LS6
I've had my 70 LS6 since 1972 I and I'm amased at how few LS6 I come across and the few that are "LS6" are " well it used to be"... or ..."crate engine"... or I think it is because its a big blocketc. In 1973 when I got married, I tried to trade it in for a new "family" type carThank God it was during the "gas crisis" and as soon as the salesman saw it he laughed and said he could only give me a few hundred for it. It was a good enough excuse for me to keep the beast 'cause I kinda felt that it might be worth something some day. Now there must be 10,000 LS6 running aroundthey are all over the place...so buyer be ware does apply. I know with the 64-70 chevelle's it also depended on what quarter of the year the car was manufactored in. For instance, my 69 came with a SS hood from the factory but is not an SS because they had an excess of SS hoods. If they were out of one part and it was too close to EOY, they would just slap on something else. I don't think that 70SS is original though. RE: [Chevelle-List] Another Ebay LS6
At first glance, I would have guessed this one to be a project someone put together to screw somebody out of a bunch of money. JMHO, this one feels wrong all over. For the kind of money the real McCoy commands, a whole lot of enterprizing guys will do a whole lot of work...including forging the build sheet, which is, BTW, a piece of cake. In fact, I'm reasonably confident that there are places on the net where you can BUY a build sheet made to order. I think NONECk is right about this: Without the data from GM directly by VIN, you just have no way of knowing the true skinny anymore. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:owner-chevelle-list@;chevelles.net]On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, October 28, 2002 12:52 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [Chevelle-List] Another Ebay LS6 1.
