production trim pieces on that one! Cool car... even cooler than other Z-16s

Well that sure sounds like the same car. And yes I do believe the article came from a copy of Chevy High Performance, not sure on the date though (still have not found the article). But you covered it rather well. It's neat to hear that you have actually looked at the car and the build sheet. From the photo in the article it would be difficult to distinguish a real vs. fake buildsheet. And as you say Just because something appears in print, it isn't automatically gospel.

Having said that, I will add that there is more to the story on the fiberglass cowl hood. This same gentleman from Texas was able to locate the manufacturer of the special hood. Apparently the company was/is still in business, and in fact still had a number of these hoods in storage. He purchased the last 3 (?) hoods that they had.

Now, about the LS6 w/aluminum head option. Once again, I am going to use my encyclopedia of car facts/fiction and say that I recall a letter that was written to a magazine wanting to know what the engine code was that was stamped on his block. The response was something to the effect of Your not going to believe this, but we looked up that code and it deciphers out as an LS6 w/aluminum heads ! We were not aware that engine even existed. Anyone care to look up the engine codes ?

You don't happen to recall the engine code for this application, do you, Kent? After researching my sources I'm unable to come up with any codes that indicate an LS6 w/aluminum heads. I did, however, come up with: CKP=396/375, alum heads w/TH400; CKT=396/375, alum heads w/4spd; CKU=396/375, alum heads w/HD clutch

Interestingly, one of my research sources includes all the suffix codes for engines built at the Tonawanda engine assembly plant and included in the list were suffixes for the '71 Chevelle LS-6, which most Chevelle enthusiasts agree was never produced. The codes are: CPZ for 4spd applications, and CPY for TH400 applications. According to this information, there were four CPZ engines built and ten CPY engines built.

Were they ever installed in actual production cars? That's a point of considerable conjecture on both sides of the table. I don't think they were... It's my feeling that if there were potentially fourteen Chevelles built with this engine, certainly one of them would have withstood the ravages of time and surfaced by now. But, with evidence that at least the engines were produced, there may still be a remote chance that one eventually may see the light of day.

Of course, the much-discussed Z-16 convertible may have been built, too. But to this point there's not even one acceptable shred of evidence to substantiate its existence. And the debate continues to this day...

Interesting point you make about the hood. When I discussed it with the owner of the car in Lubbock, he stated that it was the only one he knew of, and hadn't had any success tracking down the manufacturer. Apparently that situation has changed since my conversation with him. Where did your info come from, and who can I contact to find out more about these fiberglass CI hoods? With the quality that went into them, I felt like they may have been an engineering feasibility study, and were constructed by some Detroit-based proto shop for GM/Chevrolet. If I recall, the hood would even accept the stainless moulding that is attached to the edge of the hood nearest the windshield. This is usually something that most aftermarket hood manufacturers don't concern themselves with. They would, however, if it was part of the engineering spec given to them by GM. Again, these are just my personal observations, and not hard facts.

I'd love to have one of those hoods... so I could install it on my '70 L89 convertible when/if I ever come across one!!! Surely there's gotta be one stuck out there in a barn somewhere!

I don't know of any documented alu head 1970 LS6 engines installed at the
factory in any car. In 1971 Chevy built a small number of LS6 Corvettes with
alu heads. The LS7 was going to be sort of a L88 but 454 instead of 427. It
was going to have alu heads. The LS7 program was canceled but a steel head
LS7 was sold over the parts counter. All the hi po parts you wanted were in
the chevy hi po parts catolog in the 70s.

As for LS6 convertibles, all the numbers being touted out there are just

that I received (years ago), that tells the story of a gentleman in Texas (I
believe) that has in his possession a '70 Chevelle convertible LS6 w/aluminum
heads. There was a picture of the car sitting in a large pole

showed LS6 w/aluminum head...AND...the car came from the factory with a

Just because something appears in print, it isn't automatically gospel I know, because I've made many mistakes over the past 25 years while penning various articles for magazines. However, I've always been open anyone that could shed new light on a subject and broaden my scope of knowledge.

Chevy High Performance had a brief article in it a few years back about the L89/LS6 convertible Chevelle from TX. I assume it's the same one being discussed here. It caused quite a controversy among the readers, with arguments going both ways.

A few years prior to it appearing in the magazine, however, I personally inspected the car and the build sheet while on a business trip to Lubbock, TX. To the trained eye, the build sheet is laughable... not even close. All the fonts are wrong, it was obviously a counterfeit, and not a good one at that.

A couple of years after the magazine article the car was sold at a Barrett-Jackson auction to a gentleman from Mustang, OK. The reason I know this is because after purchasing the Chevelle he asked me to help authenticate the car, which I agreed to. He sent me a copy of the same build sheet that I'd seen years earlier, and I told him based on that questionable piece of documentation I was unable to confirm the authenticity of the Chevelle. He called me a few weeks later to let me know he'd been able to get his money back. At the present time, it is unknown what the status of the car is or where it's located.

Still, it was a neat car and a great what if Chevrolet decided to build one exercise. The coolest thing about the car, at least to me, was the functional, fiberglass cowl induction hood. It had all the right underbracing and sealing areas, and looked to me like a regular steel CI hood, except the thing was all fiberglass. The owner of the Chevelle was unable to confirm whether it may have been a GM prototype that got out of the engineering dept, or if some aftermarket company may have produced it. At any rate, I've never seen another like it.

The other interesting car that he had parked in the same building was a black '66 SS with 427 fender flags and SS427 grill/cove emblems on it... purported to be a factory-produced car. It, too, was somewhat suspect as there was no paperwork confirming that fact. I've searched long and hard in my quest for Chevelle knowledge over the past 30 years, to find confirmation that some factory 427 Chevelles were produced in '66-7, but have yet to see one stitch of evidence to support that proposition. And, I believe that among the Chevelle cognoscente, that seems to be the prevailing line of thought. It, too, was a cool car with a healthy 427 and a rare GM-produced underhood cowl-plenum air cleaner.

So, at least that's my read on a couple of Chevelles that are unique and over time have become somewhat mythical... but ultimately, not verifiable. If anyone knows any more info on either of these cars (anyone, especially in the Lubbock, TX area), I'd like to hear from you and consider any evidence you have to support either of the claims that these cars are real. As I said earlier, I'm always open to anybody that can bring new light to a subject and increase my knowledge. This has been a great thread, thanks for allowing me to comment.

And, I believe

Whoa, Chuck! "Cognoscente"? You been reading
Webster's again? :*) Wow!

Speaking of things in print...the Year One (spring
98)catalog I haveshows SS427 flags for 66/67 Chevelles but state,
"427's weren't originally factory-installed in '66 models but it's a common
swap. For this reason, we're including these emblems
here."

Concerning the Z-16's they state that the prototype was
built in Baltimore on a hardtop chassis and the other 200 (and I quote "all
Z-16s were hardtops") wereassembled in Kansas City using the convertible
boxedframe.

Four years ago at least, the "Tech Car"prototype was
owned by and on display at the, then new, Floyd Garrett.

Ha! Made ya reach for the dictionary on that one, huh, Dale? I figger since you're one of 'em, now you know what you are!

I agree with Year One... the 427 is a fairly common swap into '66-7 Chevelles. But emblems alone do not make the car! As for the Z-16 proto, Floyd sold it a while back, and it's now in the possession of Terry Gunter down in Atlanta. Lotsa experimental and early production trim pieces on that one! Cool car... even cooler than other Z-16s because of its early build status. Unfortunately, it's not in the museum anymore so seeing it in person is not as easy as it was a few years ago.

I'll bet that's one of your favorite parts of the business you're in. Research is one of my favorite things to do when it comes to my work. Amassing knowledge of everything El Camino has been fun too. Recently I saw a 1960 model close up and after commenting on it and posting the picture to the web page, a friend told me that he liked the 1959 better. Since then I have seen one in person and would love someday to find one in a barn. I love the cat's eye tailights and fins. It has become one of my top three I want one cars.

The one I saw at the Granbury, Texas Cruise now has a blower sticking out of the hood on a 350 and the 283 has gone by the wayside. The guy used to have a 1969 Chevelle, but sold it to start his new project.

On a different note, I lived my first six years in Lubbock...pretty fond memories of our house on 20th street...nice town.

Well that sure sounds like the same car. And yes
I do believe the article came from a copy of Chevy High Performance, not sure on
the date though (still have not found the article). But you covered it
rather well. It's neat to hear that you have actually looked at the car
and the build sheet. From the photo in the article it would be difficult
to distinguish a real vs. fake buildsheet. And as you say "Just because something appears in print, it isn't
automatically gospel".

Having said that, I will add that there is more to the
story on the fiberglass cowl hood. This same gentleman from Texas was able
to locate the manufacturer of the special hood. Apparently the company
was/is still in business, and in fact still had a number of these hoods in
storage. He purchased the last 3 (?) hoods that they
had.

Now, about the LS6 w/aluminum head option. Once again, I
am going to use my "encyclopedia of car facts/fiction" and say that I recall a
letter that waswritten to a magazine wanting to know what theengine
codewas that was stamped on his block. The response was something to
the effect of "Your not going to believe this, but we looked up that code
and it deciphers out as an LS6 w/aluminum heads ! Wewere not aware
that engine even existed."Anyone care to lookup the
engine codes ?

What is an L-89 or 88 65 Chevelle? Do you mean an L-79 327/350. If you
do then you haven't been paying attention to the list or the books. If
there is, then I haven't been paying attention. Anyone else?

There is a 70 396 car that is rarer than the LS6. I forget the RPO, but if i
can recall, it is an L89 ragtop. There is also a 69 396 post car that there
were like 6 made. One of them was at Super Chevy in Maple Grove. I also know
of a 1930 Cadillac Limo that has a V-16 in it and is valued at least around

I don't have the production numbers (sorry), but I am certain that Chad is

I met a guy at a shop - not related to cars, all model
stuff (planes, cars, trains, etc...) and He had a1968 or 1969 Baldwin
Motion Camaro (not a chevelle, but still cool), and I saw it, it was Dark green
with white stripes, and I never rode in it, whichI regret, but anyways, I
remember meeting him again and he told me that hesold it for $104,000
somewhere, and I couldn't believe my eyes that he sold that goregeous
car... And now that I think about it, isn't 104,000 for a Baldwin M. cheap
(not exactly cheap, but lower in price than most for sale)?

Re: [Chevelle-List] Rarest Cars in the US...

2002-07-29 Thread Chad Playso

L-88:
Introduced in 1967 (so I'm guessing they weren't in 1965).
quoted from Year One - The L-88 engine was basically a race engine built
only in sufficient quantities to satisfy the homologation rules of various
racing sanctioning bodies. These engines featured either cast-iron or
aluminum heads (aluminum heads were optional) and a healthy 12.5:1
compression ratio. Specifications for the mechanical camshaft were .562
intake, .584 exhaust lift; 354° intake and 360° exhaust duration. The
bottom end was of course all forged with 4-bolt main bearing caps. Although
no horsepower figures for the L-88 were released by Chevrolet in 1967, they
arbitrarily tagged the virtually identical 1968 version at 430. True figures
were probably in the 500 range.
L-89: (also not in 1965)
1968-1969 396/375 HP, same as L-78 but with optional closed chamber square
port aluminum heads for Nova and Camaro.
1968 427/425 HP Corvette, same as L-71 but with optional closed chamber
square port aluminum heads.

PS.
I didn't really know about L-88's and L-89's but when aaw1255 said that
there were L-88's and L-89's, I just wanted to tell you that I knew that
there were L-88's and L-89's, but in reality, they were introduced farther
down the road from 1965. I apologize, but still, here you go, I got some
information on the L-88 and L-89's...

What is an L-89 or 88 65 Chevelle? Do you mean an L-79 327/350.
If
  you
do then you haven't been paying attention to the list or the books.
If
there is, then I haven't been paying attention. Anyone else?

How
about the Canadian variants? For example, my '68 Pontiac Beaumont SD396
coupe (702 built, estimated 15 still on the road). It's for sale if anyone
is interested.

I have
heard that the '69 GTO Judge was a limited production car; something like 970
units! That would be a rare bird.

Buick GS Stage 1 and just thinks that there are a lot of them, but in reality,
only - if im not mistaken - 672 were made...my dadis not going to tell him
how rare it is as he is thinking about selling it for 15 grand...Perfect
Condition!

I don't think 69 396 post cars are quite that rare (6 built). I used to
have one (http://www.dalesplace.com/images/gallery/69/69ss.jpg and
http://www.dalesplace.com/images/gallery/69/69ss_2.jpg) I bought from the
original owner in the early 70's. Rumor I heard back then was around 1400
but maybe someone with Dan Carr's poster can give a more accurate
(extrapolated) number? The only options on mine were the SS package, TH400,
AM radio and power steering. Even had the bench seat and rubber floor mats.

There is a 70 396 car that is rarer than the LS6. I forget the
 RPO, but if i
can recall, it is an L89 ragtop. There is also a 69 396 post car
 that there
were like 6 made. One of them was at Super Chevy in Maple Grove.
 I also know
of a 1930 Cadillac Limo that has a V-16 in it and is valued at
 least around
 the $500,000 mark
