Re: [Chevelle-list] HEI ignition wires for SBC
I bought MSD 8.5 super conductor good wires I am happy with them. Bought the ones you cut to length a little work but worth it. Bought the red ones to use with my Mallory red HEI looks good Doug 1966 Chevelle 400 SB From: John Nasta [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, June 24, 2006 9:29 PM To: The Chevelle Mailing List Subject: [Chevelle-list] HEI ignition wires for SBC What kind of wires are you guys using on SBCs w/ HEI? Re: [Chevelle-list] HEI ignition wires for SBC
Thanks. I'll look at that the next time it's not raining. Since there was no HEI in 1969, the guy looked up wires for a 1976 Corvette w/ a 350 HEI. I wouldn't call that an early Vette but maybe that's why they are so long. My block is from 1958 so it may not have them. Am I supposed to look for holes big enough for a wire to pass through? Are you sure they are holes? Somehow I doubt that. Quoting Devin [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Generic cut wires are cut plenty long enough to fit early Corvettes, which run along a mount on the bellhousing then up underneath the manifolds. All the small blocks I've looked at have these holes in place, one on the bell flange and 2 on each side on the block near the head. The holes are only 1/4 I believe for a bolt that held the original bracket. Re: [Chevelle-list] HEI ignition wires for SBC
Speaking of HEI wires, I tried installing mine upside down because it seems like the little ridges inside the boots on what people usually consider the distributor end of the wires might actually mate up to the ridges on the spark plugs nicely. I guess it doesn't really matter. I'm going to pull these wires off and see if there is a way to cut them back. It was getting dark when I threw these on so I didn't have time to play around.
Re: [Chevelle-list] HEI ignition wires for SBC
Ok, I tried to buy wire looms when I bought the wires, but the store only had the universal plastic motormite clip-to-the-wires type. There were wire looms bolted to the engine from my '70 but they were too narrow and cut into the wires that were on there, so I didn't want to use them. It also freaks me out how close the battery can come to the fender in these cars. At the show yesterday, the guy next to me had the negative battery cable actually touching the fender. Gotta wonder what that does in terms of corrosion. At least it was the negative. I saw some guys also using side-terminal batteries, which makes sense even though it doesn't look original. My battery is too small for the tray and has the positive terminal is on the side that faces the fender, but some of you saw my custom hold-down that keeps it snug to the radiator. It seems like if you have a battery that fits the tray properly (i.e. doesn't move around in the tray) and the terminals are tucked in just a little, you'd be good to go. Maybe I'll buy the right battery some day, but this one's still good and the car is a driver after all. -Original Message- From: Devin [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, June 25, 2006 12:28 PM To: The Chevelle Mailing List Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] HEI ignition wires for SBC The holes are only 1/4 I believe for a bolt that held the original bracket. Re: [Chevelle-list] HEI ignition wires for SBC
I run a group 34/78 which has the battery terminals in the center of the top of the battery. It also has a 900 CCA rating, and fits in the same spot as the usual 24 series battery. Do you have an actual part number? The ones I got are totally crazy. I can't imagine why you would need 4 of the wires to be so long. Are the wires you bought ready-made or universal? Some ready-made applications may route the front wires differently than you. Re: [Chevelle-list] HEI ignition wires for SBC
They are ready-made. I guess they were meant to wrap completely around the distributor once. I literally have a loop of 2 cables on either side of the engine. I guess universal cables can be cut to length? Thanks Quoting Dale [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Are the wires you bought ready-made or universal?
