I need to pick up a 4 speed Muncie tranny for my
66 SS396 in the next couple of months. The boss of the guy doing my paint has
a rock crusher M22 available for $1400. Talking to my machine shop guy, he is
expecting my 396 to produce 400 to 425 horsepower when I put it
  together.

Based on my expected output, is an M22 a good
choice, or should I save the money and get myself an M20 or M21?

And Gene, when I order the harness from you, what
will be the expected lead time?

  Thanks,
  Larry

My engine makes about 425 and I use an M21. Unless you
are pulling hole shots, the 21 is more than enough and you can pick them up for
$500. Granted, we'll all pull a hole shot once in a while. But for $500, you can
break three 21's before you get to a 22...

A TKO would be stronger, shift more
smoothly, and be a lot quieter than an M22 Muncie. The OD 5th
would allow you to gear the car for the best performance AND
mileage. My 69 El Camino w/6spd is turning 2,000 rpm at 70mph,with
4.11 cogs. In 4th gear,which has a 1:1 ratio just like the M22,
70mph would equate to 4,000 rpm.

horsepower when I put it together.

Based on my expected output, is an M22 a
good choice, or should I save the money and get myself an M20 or
  M21?

And Gene, when I order the harness from
you, what will be the expected lead time?

  Thanks,

I was just looking at www.classicchevy5speed.com 's elite
kit. I basically need everything flywheel and back, so this kit would seem to do
the trick, but the price of $3800+ is a bit hard to swallow. Can I get a
better deal someplace else?

A TKO would be stronger, shift more
smoothly, and be a lot quieter than an M22 Muncie. The OD 5th would allow
you to gear the car for the best performance AND mileage. My 69 El Camino
  w/6spd is turning 2,000 rpm at 70mph,with 4.11 cogs. In 4th gear,which has a
1:1 ratio just like the M22, 70mph would equate to 4,000 rpm.

Clint,

Give me the pros and cons, besides the obvious
5th gear.

Thanks,
Larry

I would spend another hundred dollars or so
  and buy a Tremec TKO-500 5spd.

I need to pick up a 4 speed Muncie tranny
for my 66 SS396 in the next couple of months. The boss of the guy doing
my paint has a rock crusher M22 available for $1400. Talking to my
machine shop guy, he is expecting my 396 to produce 400 to 425
horsepower when I put it together.

Based on my expected output, is an M22 a
good choice, or should I save the money and get myself an M20 or
M21?

And Gene, when I order the harness from
you, what will be the expected lead time?
