If your rear end is sound and you do not want to rebuild the Powertrax is the way to go. A one day job with no special tools. http://www.richmondgear.com/powertrax/lockright.html If you want to change gears do a complete rebuild Eaton last longer than Auburns in my experience. This will cost you twice as much in parts and labor. Plus you may need to pull the whole rear. I have a 3:55 in my 70 Malibu and it is working great for me. I have a 700R4 with a lockout converter and with the 3:55 at 60 I am running around 2200 rpm and on the Hot Rod Power Tour I got 19mpg on the open road. I haven't dyno'ed the engine yet but am definitely above 400hp. The car really jumps off the line if I want to get on it as well. My suggestion 3:55. Chuck Speake 1970 Chevelle Malibu Glen Ellyn, IL. Re: [Chevelle-list] Posi?
Number 1 if you have a 4.56 rear now, you will also have to change your carrier to a 3 series carries (you now have a 4 series). If your going to stay in town with a turbo 400 a 3.73 would be OK but if your going to cruise on the open road you should consider a 3.30 gear ratio. The 396 has plenty of torque even with the higher ratios - Original Message - From: Smith, James L. To: chevelle-list@chevelles.net Sent: Tuesday, July 29, 2008 1:29 PM Subject: [Chevelle-list] Posi? I have 3.31 gears in my elky wish they were just a little bit lower (?) I think 3.55 would be perfect. My cruise RPM (1800rpm) seems a bit too low in the power band.As for the posi, one brand of the 2 ( and I don't remember which) is rebuildable the other is not.
