RE: [Chevelle-list] Ring and Pinion Auburn vs. Eaton
I'm pretty happy with my Auburn Pro Series and 4.10 setup. It locks up great and is smooth/quiet. Mine is a 12 bolt with Superior axles and I completely rebuilt it. I broke the stock carrier. The spider gears grenaded while stalling up for a launch. I am beginning to lean toward the Auburn unit. I know the 8.2 10 bolt is not the best, but will a beefed version be at least as good as a stock 12 bolt? I am planning on going with all new innards with 3.08's and aftermarket c-clip axles and a girdle type rear cover. I'm still going to have about $1,200 in it. The 3.08 are temporary as I am saving toward a Gear Vendor unit in about two years from now, then I will go with something in the 3:42 - 3:90ish Range. It also stands to reason that the 8.2 would allow for less parasitic power loss and be quicker and return better gas mileage due to the lighter weight of the internals. But since the ring gear is smaller in diameter, the pinion would have less leverage so theoretically it would probably equal out...or only be marginally better? Is anyone out there running an 8.5 10 bolt? The big advantage to the 9" is that you can change the ring and pinion as a single unit, making gear changes at the track or at home very simple. The 9" takes more power to turn than a 12 bolt (parasitic loss). They are great rears, but I would not put a F*** part under my Chevy!!! RE: [Chevelle-list] Ring and Pinion Auburn vs. Eaton
Clint, Do you have Disc brakes on the rear of your Elky? Did you have to modify your 12 bolt? They tell me I need to install a C clip eliminator kit? There are two different bearing choices. One is tapered and the other is standard heavy duty ball bearings. Global says use the Roller bearings. Moser said most go for the ball bearings 70 Vs 30%. Pyle Bros says the tapered bearing are for those that take corners or cruising, the ball bearings are for drag applications. I'm confused. My friend mechanic says go for the ball bearings. He said you won't drive the car that much any way??? What to do!?
