Get a good self etching primer, like Dupont Vari prime. Spray a very light coat over all metal surfaces. You will still be able to see through the primer for any additional work needed. So the Variprime can stay on and you spray primer over that?
Sand first?

Thanks.

Pete.. Vari Prime goes over Bare
Metal.. You then Prime over it .
Dupont has a Tech sheet on there
Web regarding flash times and over coat.
typically I over shoot
itwithUro Prime in 20 min..At least TWO GOOD COATS.. it needs no
sanding for this top coat application..

I read in Car Craft
a couple of years ago that if the car will sit for awhile with just primer, You
don't want to use a lacquer. Lacquer will absorb moisture over time. Especially
in the winter. Use an epoxy primer. The link belowis about restoring a
Morgan. Pay attention to the last paragraph. Hope that helps you to
decide.

Vari Prime or anybody's self etching primer is designed to
chemically etch bare metal to both seal and aid adhesion. There should be no
rust after the etching primer if you have removed it first. The metal prep I am
familiar with is a rust converter, not a sealer. Once etched, you can continue
working on the body. Just reapply afterwards to areas of bare metal. A
PPGcompany, Specialty Coatings, has the etching primer in anspray
can for about 8 bucks a can. This is real handy for redoing small areas as you
go. Keep in mind that this process does not replace priming for paint. It just
keeps the rust away until you are ready to prime and paint.Hope this
helps.

Thanks thats great,
can any of you body gooruus confirm this info below.

For exterior metal (usually the body) any of the automotive grade enamel or lacquer primers and paints can be used. However, a lacquer primer does not inhibit rust. If the part is to remain unpainted for any length if time, the primer will absorb water and the metal will rust under the paint. DuPont as a relatively new primer called "Vera prime". It is supposedly a polyurethane with an etchant that when dry seals the metal from any water. Thus competes a quick course in fighting rust. 2003-10-08 Thread George Spatta

Hey guys,

I'm really glad this subject was brought up. I am
at the point with my 66 where I'm needing to think about how to prep all of the
metal. It would be great if someone could give an explanation of the different
types of primers, sealers, rust encapsulators, etc.. and their applications for
different types of topcoats. It's my understanding ( please correct me if
I'm mistaken) that an etching primer (a.k.a.. wash primer) is to be used over
bare metal to prime and help prevent rust. Does this basically do the same rust
prevention as Ospho, or Metal Prep? If you plan on using any body filler you
will then have to use an epoxy primer (such as DP90) over the etching primer??
Is an epoxy primer such as DP90 (DP90LF) considered a 2K primer?Where does
POR the like enter the equation? Can you coat body sheet metal with
these rust encapsulators or are they only good for floors and insides of fenders
and such? (places that won't need any filler or finish sanding done to
them).

Sorry if these questions have been asked a bunch
before but I have scoured the archives and am still a little confused about what
to use when.

Thanks!

If you hyave it down to bare metal ya better prime it right away. Any length of time that you have bare metal exposed to the elements, even in a garage, the decay process will begin.

If the car is in a garage (assuming it is) just use some cheapo spray can primer. If you plan on doing the bodywork yourself, go to an automotive paint supply store and get a 2 part epoxy primer, shoot the whole car with it and then do your bodywork. The bondo sticks to it better than bare metal.
I left my 69 in the garage in bare metal form for a few months and it never rusted.
