Help reqd on Inter Vlan IPX/SAP traffic forwarding [7:45581]

2002-06-01 Thread Hitesh Pathak R

Dear Group

I am configuring the IPX/SAP traffic forwarding between Vlan's on a catalyst
6006 with MSFC. The scenario is like this :-

cat6506(CORE)-cat4003(DISTRIBUTION)-cat2924(Access)clients

1) Vlan no. 15 Server Vlan
All my servers are connected to this Vlan. I have a Nolell 5.0 server also
placed in this Vlan.

2)Vlan No 11 Client Vlan
All my users are connected to this Vlan. There are some machines which
requires to remote boot (Novell server). I have 2 combination of NIC's.
Number 1 is 802.3 frame type supported 2nd is RPL bootrom enabled with
802.2 frame type supported.

Now I am able to remote boot with systems that has 3COM lan cards installed
bcoz they support frane type eth_802.3 from any vlan. I.e. From the server
vlan as well as across the Vlan also. I have respective IPX config done on
my all the vlan interfaces with IPX helper addresses that helps in IPX
packet forwarding across Vlan.
However I am not able to boot with my RPL enabled bootrom (frame type
802.2) Across the Vlan. As per Cisco the 802.2 frame type is actually SAP
broadcasts. But I am able to remote boot successfully with the same cards
within the sererver vlan i.e. vlan 15.
I see some problem in forwarding sap broadcasts across the Vlan. I am not
too sure about the type of broadcasts or packet that the RPL enabled cards
require to remote boot.
I tried may settings on Novell server with the help of my Novell expert
finally we came to conclusion that there is some settings/command to be
configured on L3 i.e. My MSFC.
I am attaching my L3 config here for the reference. Pls suggest something.

I'm sure this will get deleted also, but I would at least like to add that
there's no reason to pay for something you can get for free.

go to google and try typing ccie cheat

Bingo, the Global Document Database has a TON of great stuff!

Well, if the moderators let this through, I'll probably get flamed to
death
because I'm always pushing CCxx Productions. Why? Because I wrote most of
the materials. However, I can guarantee that they cover the exact same
topics as Boson at a much better price. The difference is that you get the
materials in Microsoft Word format instead of a test engine. But the
advantage of that is that you can transport the materials anywhere you
want.
With Boson, you can only put the materials on one PC.

I took the CCIE written yesterday afternoon and passed (80%)

I was expecting more, but I flunked the performance/QoS section of
the
exam,
which I neglected somewhat during preparation.

I used both Boson #1 and Boson #3. Those 2 tests are complementary
and
  are
NOT substitute for each other. Boson #3 focuses on SNA issues where
as
Boson
#1 focuses on the other networking topics.
If you can, you should purchase both tests.

For preparation I did a pre-test on Boson #3 and discovered how
little
  SNA
and ATM I knew. For 3 weeks, I studied SNA and ATM using CCO +
  hands-on
until the whole thing felt natural. Then, on the 4th week of
  preparation
  I
repeated the same strategy with Boson #1. I dicovered 3 areas of
networking
where I had some weaknesses. I only had time to work on 2 of them
thoroughly
before the test.

Thank you to Bernard and Dennis for excellent test materials and to
  all
those who gracefully took the time to answer my questions. I
  particularly
want to thank Priscilla and Leigh Anne who both put me back on track
several
times during the last two years and Daniel Cotts for squeezing some
  time
out
of his busy schedule to spend some time discussing Cisco with me.

Re: Help reqd on Inter Vlan IPX/SAP traffic forwarding [7:45586]

2002-06-01 Thread Priscilla Oppenheimer

Are you sure your RPL enabled bootrom PCs really need SAP broadcasts to
boot? SAP has two meanings in the Novell world. Don't confuse them.

Service Advertising Protocol (SAP) sends broadcasts to advertise services.

An Ethernet Frame Type of SAP simply means that the frame contains an 802.3
and 802.2 header. The 802.2 header has a Destination Service Access Point
(SAP) and a Source Service Access Point.

It's unfortunate that Cisco calls this sap. Novell calls it Ethernet_802.2.

The other common Ethernet encapsulation is novell-ether. That has just an
802.3 header. Cisco calls this novell-ether. It's the default. Novell calls
it Ethernet_802.3. (There are two others also, Ethernet II and SNAP but
they aren't relevant.)

On your VLAN 11 where the clients reside, you have clients that use both
Ethernet_802.3 and Ethernet_802.2. On that VLAN you will need two IPX
network numbers, each using a different encapsulation:

ipx network
ipx network encap sap secondary

Oh, I just noticed that you already have that.

I doubt that you need the ipx sap helper address. (I don't think they
really use the Service Advertising Protocol). Also, the ipx helper address
can just be in there once and point to the same one that all the others
point to. I think you can get rid of these lines:

  ipx helper-address D11.0002.5558.519b
  ipx sap-helper D11.0002.5558.519b

I bet Cisco is scratching their heads trying to find out why the sudden
demand on IOS manuals...
After 45 minutes of searching the Site I found where to order. I don't know
that I would ever find it again
So I started ordering things left and right
I bet I have 25+ books coming...
I finally have new books to read!

Thanks

 John,

I believe if you have a smartnet contract, you can get the IOS manuals
free
from Cisco (at least you could a couple years ago).

Re: access-list question? [7:45585]

2002-06-01 Thread Gaz

If you are trying to restrict telnet access to the router to only those
addresses (192.168.1.0 to 192.168.7.0), you need at least two lines in the
access list.
If you can let 192.168.0.0 /24 through as well, then you can get it down to
one line.

Rather than using an extended access list, you can use a standard access
list and then apply it as an access class to the VTY lines.
Something like this:

access-list 31 deny 192.168.0.0 0.0.0.255
access-list 31 permit 192.168.0.0 0.0.0.7.255

line vty 0 4
 access class 31 in

Forget the first line if you can let 192.168.0.0 /24 through.

Anybody's welcome to chip in if I missed something, or even totally screwed
it up. World Cup fever has hit and still recovering. (Any French list
members - ho ho - sorry!)

What do you call a Frenchman in the 2nd round of the world cup?

If you are trying to restrict telnet access to the router to only those
addresses (192.168.1.0 to 192.168.7.0), you need at least two lines in the
 access list.
If you can let 192.168.0.0 /24 through as well, then you can get it down
to
 one line.

Rather than using an extended access list, you can use a standard access
list and then apply it as an access class to the VTY lines.
 Something like this:

 access-list 31 deny 192.168.0.0 0.0.0.255
 access-list 31 permit 192.168.0.0 0.0.0.7.255

 line vty 0 4
  access class 31 in

Forget the first line if you can let 192.168.0.0 /24 through.

Anybody's welcome to chip in if I missed something, or even totally
screwed
it up. World Cup fever has hit and still recovering. (Any French list
members - ho ho - sorry!)

What do you call a Frenchman in the 2nd round of the world cup?

Re: teaching CCNA [7:45489]

2002-06-01 Thread Kevin Cullimore

Back in 1999, most vendor certs were pretty intolerant regarding the use of
abbreviations in answers to fill-in-the-blank syntax questions. I suspect
that had more to do with limitations of the testing software and the
overwhelming desire to not compensate people for the effort required to
rectify the situation rather than an insistence that people type thousands
of more characters than they need to in order to do their job.

I will be teaching a CCNA class next week. I've never taught an intro
class
before. ;-) The textbook will be Wendell Odom's Cisco CCNA Exam #640-607
Certification Guide. I didn't choose it, but I'm fine with it. I have
some
 questions, however:

Wendell covers Catalyst 1900 configuration in quite a bit of detail.
Cisco's list of topics for 640-607 doesn't include this, so I'm not
planning to teach it, and in fact, we won't have a switch in the lab
probably. Will this be OK? Does anyone know if the 640-607 test has
 Catalyst 1900 configuration questions??

Does anyone know if the test (which now includes router simulation
questions) allows one to use abbreviations for commands? (such as cop run
start instead of copy running-config startup-config)?

Token Ring doesn't support multicast (He says this many times.) I know
IEEE 802.5 does officially support it. I also know that many Token Ring
NICs didn't support it in the early 1990s. Didn't they fix that??? I would
have thought that Token Ring NIC vendors would have added support for
 multicast by now.

 Thanks!

 Priscilla

2002-06-01 Thread Chuck

183 days and counting. like the Flying Dutchman, I'll pass the Lab if...

actually, the gods of the Lab have already started with me.

I haven't had the routers on in quite a few weeks. Been busy at work. Had
some big projects to keep me out of my own lab for a while.

So I have a customer network that I need to clean up a few things on. I set
up a model in my own lab, cable everything up to emulate the customer's
situation, and begin. First step - configure the frame relay switch.

try to get into enable mode. Keep getting asked for a password. Rats! What
is the enable password? I try the usual suspects, and come up empty.

no problem. I'll just do a quick password recovery. I do a search on CCO,
quickly locate the procedure, and begin...

power off. power on. control break. no luck - the router just boots as
normal.

hhm I've done recoveries before. no biggie. why am I having the
problem?

Now I know the smart guys among you will tell me it's because I use hyper
terminal. so I close HT, and load up my copy of Tera Term. repeat the power
off power on sequence, try alt b, and no luck. the router loads as usual.

now I'm panicking. I have been trying this via my term server. I go directly
into the router, replacing the term server cable with a direct connection.

still no luck. alt b with Tera term, control break with hyper term. the
router still loads as normal.

Well, I've figured out the problem. I've gotten into the router. I'm happily
working on my customer simulation. the frame switch is configured as I wish.

the question to all of you - what was the problem? what was the solution?

bad rollover or,

Swapping out each of the above, one at a time, undoubtedly led to your

Perhaps the Allow Break Sequence bit was disabled from a previous
change in the confreg setting!?!?

If this was the case, you had to pop the top of your Frame Switch
router and do temp. jumper change that resets the config register
settings back to factory defaults.

I'll be interested to know what the answer was :)

Have a great weekend to all!

RE: CCIE Written passed - Boson [7:45535]

2002-06-01 Thread Kaminski, Shawn G

Here's why it matters: I had a discussion with Paul Borghese (owner of
Groupstudy) a while back regarding messages on this list that are from
people trying to tout their websites or products. As long as the messages
are helping someone with a problem on this list (which you were, and that's
cool) and the person writing the message makes note of their involvement
with the product or service, then the message is in good taste. Paul doesn't
want this list to become a list of advertisements for anyone who has a Cisco
product to sell, which I can understand. That's why whenever I mention CCxx
Productions, Network Learning, Quizware, or Boson (whom I'm not too fond of
right now) when trying to help someone with a certification question or
trying to help them save money on their certification study materials, I
make note of any involvement that I've had with them in the past, present,
or future.

2002-06-01 Thread Nick Lesewski

I love how all these guys use boson as the point of comparison. That alone
tells me something. When I passed the written I used several of the popular
books, including reading Caslow and Doyle, which are more for the lab, but
are great books. Then I tested myself with the #1 and #3 bosons; and they
were great. One of them, and I don't remember which, had something like 400
questions and was right on the money.

Lastly, the current version of the written is going away soon, and if
anybody is getting ready to test out, they should have multiple sources of
study. Definitely read the popular books, review the public domain
cramsessions that are around, and download a couple of these practice test
things. The test costs $300 (or at least it did when I took it, I think
it's more now), and buying ALL the popular books, the bosons AND shawn's
home grown ms word document thingy is less then the price of failing just
once and having to take it again.

Just my $.02 (was that a gentle enough flame?)

Out of curiosity, what model router is the frame switch?

183 days and counting. like the Flying Dutchman, I'll pass the Lab if...
nope - better not make that threat. you never can tell..

actually, the gods of the Lab have already started with me.

I haven't had the routers on in quite a few weeks. Been busy at work. Had
some big projects to keep me out of my own lab for a while.

So I have a customer network that I need to clean up a few things on. I
 set
up a model in my own lab, cable everything up to emulate the customer's
situation, and begin. First step - configure the frame relay switch.

try to get into enable mode. Keep getting asked for a password. Rats! What
is the enable password? I try the usual suspects, and come up empty.

no problem. I'll just do a quick password recovery. I do a search on CCO,
quickly locate the procedure, and begin...

power off. power on. control break. no luck - the router just boots as
 normal.

hhm I've done recoveries before. no biggie. why am I having
 the
 problem?

Now I know the smart guys among you will tell me it's because I use hyper
terminal. so I close HT, and load up my copy of Tera Term. repeat the
 power
off power on sequence, try alt b, and no luck. the router loads as usual.

now I'm panicking. I have been trying this via my term server. I go
 directly
into the router, replacing the term server cable with a direct connection.

still no luck. alt b with Tera term, control break with hyper term. the
 router still loads as normal.

Well, I've figured out the problem. I've gotten into the router. I'm
 happily
working on my customer simulation. the frame switch is configured as I
 wish.

the question to all of you - what was the problem? what was the solution?

RE: CCIE Written passed - Boson [7:45535]

2002-06-01 Thread Kaminski, Shawn G

That was a fair enough flame. HOWEVER, :-) the reason Boson is used as the
comparison is because people are cultified (is that a word?) with them even
though they could get CCIE Written materials for $50.00 less than Boson that
cover the EXACT SAME TOPICS! WHY IS THAT? ARE PEOPLE AFRAID OF CHANGE, OR
WHAT? Doesn't that tell you something? It would sure tell me something!
Like, what could I do with an extra $50.00 in my pocket!

I love how all these guys use boson as the point of comparison. That
 alone
tells me something. When I passed the written I used several of the
 popular
books, including reading Caslow and Doyle, which are more for the lab, but

are great books. Then I tested myself with the #1 and #3 bosons; and they

were great. One of them, and I don't remember which, had something like
 400
questions and was right on the money.

Well, if the moderators let this through, I'll probably get flamed to
 death
because I'm always pushing CCxx Productions. Why? Because I wrote most of
the materials. However, I can guarantee that they cover the exact same
topics as Boson at a much better price. The difference is that you get
 the
materials in Microsoft Word format instead of a test engine. But the
advantage of that is that you can transport the materials anywhere you
 want.
With Boson, you can only put the materials on one PC.

NAT - something new ( to me ) [7:45602]

2002-06-01 Thread Chuck

OK, this has been a fun day in the lab! Truly!

To emulate a customer network so I can solve a particular customer problem,
I have to emulate a multiport PIX on one of my routers. How to do so?

That is, how to have multiple outside NAT pools, such that a translation out
one interface is different than a translation out another interface?

The problem - to simulate such that there is The Internet out one interface,
and a Business Partner Extranet out another. Obviously, internet bound
traffic has to have public ip addresses, and the extranet traffic has to
appear as a certain private subnet.

the other problem is that the inside network consists of a number of branch
offices, each connected to the central site via frame relay point to point
subinterfaces. ( well, the customer's real network is ATM, but the principal
is the same )

Can it be done?

Start with a search of CCO. Lots of hits using the term nat, but one hit
in particular looks promising:

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/556/index.shtml

scroll down the page and see this link:

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/105/nat_routemap.html

read it a while, think about it, draw up a plan, test it out. had to do a
bit of tweaking, but damn! it works exactly the way I need it to work!

RE: NAT - something new ( to me ) [7:45602]

2002-06-01 Thread Daniel Cotts

Neat! NAT can be an interesting area. MarkO tipped me off to a life saver
here:
pad
pad
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/707/static.html

The scenario uses NAT. One or more of the inside hosts have a static NAT
translation. There is a VPN tunnel terminating on the ip nat outside
interface. How to make the inside host visable to both outside hosts and
hosts on the other end of the tunnel? Traffic bound for the tunnel uses a
route-map to bounce off i.e. use a loopback interface as an ip next-hop.

Subject: NAT - something new ( to me ) [7:45602]

OK, this has been a fun day in the lab! Truly!

To emulate a customer network so I can solve a particular
 customer problem,
I have to emulate a multiport PIX on one of my routers. How to do so?

That is, how to have multiple outside NAT pools, such that a
 translation out
one interface is different than a translation out another interface?

The problem - to simulate such that there is The Internet out
 one interface,
and a Business Partner Extranet out another. Obviously, internet bound
traffic has to have public ip addresses, and the extranet
 traffic has to
appear as a certain private subnet.

the other problem is that the inside network consists of a
 number of branch
offices, each connected to the central site via frame relay
 point to point
subinterfaces. ( well, the customer's real network is ATM,
 but the principal
 is the same )

 Can it be done?

Start with a search of CCO. Lots of hits using the term
 nat, but one hit
 in particular looks promising:

scroll down the page and see this link:

 had to do a
bit of tweaking, but damn! it works exactly the way I need it to work!

CID)?

I am getting it just to get it. I hope one day to get more money from

Despite my dark predictions about when or if the CCIP will be included in
 the Cisco
Academy curriculum, I'm a huge fan of CCIP and MPLS. According to the
large
 service
providers who made presentations at MPLScon in Washington last month, MPLS
 is already
deployed and its use in core networks will continue to grow and
accelerate.
 I think the
same holds true for GMPLS in the high-speed optical core.

Well, the thing is, service-providers, and especially the larger
service-providers that are using MPLS (MPLS makes little sense for a small
providers) place little stock in the value of certs, any certs. We all know
how difficult it is to find decent work (non-cable monkey work) in an
enterprise if all you hold is a cert. Well, it's really really really hard
to find decent work at a large-provider if all you're bringing to the table
is a cert. Large providers tend to behave as something of an old-boy's
club, where for their good positions, they'll only hire somebody who's well
established.

Now, I'm not saying that you should stop learning. Learning is always good.
And indeed the CCIP technologies are very interesting ones. I'm just saying
that as far as what you might expect that these provider-oriented certs
might do for your career, you need to keep these expectations in check.
Enterprises are not going to care about things like MPLS for awhile, and
large providers don't care much about certs.

Anyway, I think most people will (like I) take the three exams by them self

I totally disagree with this statement. In the foundation exam you get
three scores, one for each of the sections. You have to pass in all
sections to pass the foundation exam. So if you are strong in two areas
 but
not the third you are likely to fail the whole exam because of this one
 area.

If you are weak in any area then Foundation is not the exam to take.

Nic said that he used both Boson 1 and 3. That's about $80.00 for

safely say that all the topics in all three Boson exams (about $120.00) are
covered in other materials for only $29.95. If someone's got all three
Bosons and wants to match topic for topic with CCxx materials, contact me

Can someone recommend a Multi-Port Serial Controller that I can attach on my
computer PCI slot, and connect to multiple router consoles. Any other ideas
/ inexpensive solutions.
Thanks a lot.
Nilesh

RE: access-list question? [7:45585]

2002-06-01 Thread Adams Josh

If you are trying to limit access on connections to the vty lines then you
should use a standard access list.
Your config will look like the following:

access-list 1 permit 192.168.1.0 0.0.6.255
line vty 0 4
transport input telnet
access-class 1 in

If you are trying to limit access for telnet sessions originating from your
router connecting to other devices; then your config will look like this:

access-list 1 permit 192.168.1.0 0.0.6.255
access-list 1 permit 192.168.1.0 0.0.6.255
line vty 0 4
transport input telnet
transport output telnet
access-class 1 out

The reasoning here is that you dont need to go so far as to specify the
transport protocol with an extended ACL when you can simply disable all
other transport types on your VTYs and have fewer ACL headaches.

You can combine these techniques to limit telnet sessions both inbound and
outbound, but be careful not to lock your keys in the car!
