Re: off topic - linksys dsl router - make long distance calls [7:262]

2001-04-11 Thread Charles Henson

I have the 4 port linksys w/o voice and several of my freinds do also. We
use dialpad and net2phone already (net2phone 3.9 cents per minute) and it
works ok. The model with the built in rj-11 is twice the cost (99.99 vs.
199.99 compusa) and doesn't really get any added benifit that I'm aware of
other than dialing through an actual phone instead of dialing through a pc.
The box is a terrific unit though.

They state you can plug an analog line in the back and use net2phone to

long distance calls at a very cheap rate. Im wondering what the catch is
and
if it is worth my purchasing one to find out.
 any details would be appreciated!

Yes, the written exam is going to be changed to a jury based oral
examination. You will be seated in a wooden chair in the middle of a
large,
cold room. Bright lights will be pointed at your face. Then, a group of 6
to
8 Cisco engineers will begin to ask you questions about the technologies
covered in the CCIE blue print. Each time you miss a question you will be
 lanced with hot pokers.

If you pass the oral exam, they will tie you to the chair, carry you out
the
back door, and throw you in the river to see if you float. If you don't
float, you were a CCIE lab candidate. If you do float, you are a witch and
will be burned at the stake.

This new process should cut down considerably on the lab backlog...

 Z

Seriously, check the cisco web site, under CCIE Program, What's New, for
updates about the exam and its contents. Don't go on hearsay...

ECP1 lab. Is it worth it?

2001-02-05 Thread Charles Henson

I've heard a lot of folks mention different prep courses for the CCIE lab
and ECP1 seems to be pretty well recommended. When I went to the site,
however, the web pages imply that this is a preparation tool for "beginning"
your CCIE lab track and isolating weaknesses to further focus on. I was
going to take this class a week or so prior to my lab (scheduled for august
and I'm not rushed to swap it up) but am not so sure now. Could someone
who's done this please reply to this post or email me directly about their
experiences with it? Thanks.

Gotcha,
IMS used to have a "prep lab" but I can't find any mention of it on
their site anymore. The global knowledge idea is to span out 3 weeks of
classes over about a 2 month window. I can't do that. I just need about a
one week "focus" class prior to the lab. I think ECP1 may be my only option.
I'm glad it's got a good rep.

I have heard it is best to take this class about 4 to 6 weeks before your
test as the class will help you see where you may need improvements to
pass
the lab, and you will probably want the time to practice the areas
 identified.

Got the written out of the way and am now going back to the basics to help

 Hello Everyone,

Failing the CCIE written test by one point yesterday really left a bad
taste in my mouth. I brushed up and took the test again today. The
question
pool must be pretty big as I only got maybe 15 questions that were the
same
from yesterday. Anyway I passed the test with a mark of 75 and am
thrilled.
This whole ordeal has given me a better respect for certification,
especially this test. As much as I learned in the process of getting to
this point, I also realized there is that much more to learn.

I am now planning on a quick pit stop to get Nortell NNCSS certification
in
routing(Any advice out there?). I then plan to obtain CCNP specialties in
ATM and Voice over IP while studying for the lab.

Now I will have to look back in the mail archives for suggestions on
putting together a CCIE lab and taking a 2nd mortgage on the home so I can
 afford the equipment.

I'd like to thank everyone on the group for their advice, this has been
the
best source of information for me. Time to watch some brainless
entertainment tonight(Cough) WWF Wrestling(cough) I find it helps me relax
 after thinking so much :)

 Thanks Everyone,

Good afternoon all, just wanted to tell everyone a quick story that I
hope
all exam takers will take heed of. I had scheduled the 350-001 RS exam
 for
Friday the 22 of December (right before xmas) almost a month in advance
at
 a
local prometric site (RTP, NC area) so that I would have plenty of time
to
prepare and then (pass or fail) could take a breather during xmas and
hopefully start focusing on the lab next year. My exam was at 11:15 and
I
had a 2pm flight immediately afterwards. I'm one of those folks that
likes
to feel not only like he's studied and ready with the material but also
mentally prepared or focused or in the zone or whatever else you want to
call it. I got a good nights sleep the night before, slept in the next
morning and arrived at the prometric site around 9am. I figured I'd
 casually
go over my 800 pages of notes one last time, and slumber into the exam
 room
a little early if they could fit me in. Problem. Locked door. I start
knocking on the window and finally some admin chick comes up and opens
the
door. She asks what I want, I explain "I have an exam at 11" to which
she
replies "not today sir we're closed". CLOSED! To make a long story short
 the
testing center had told Sylvan Prometric they would be closed this
particular pre-xmas Friday but Prometric forgot to put it in the
calendar.
 I
spent the next hour to hour and a half on the phone. First, Prometric
apologized and said they would gladly reschedule me for the following
 week.
I explained that that was not good enough as my brain would be saturated
with laced eggnog and whatever else and that the week between xmas and
newyears was just not suitable. I told them this was their mistake and
 they
needed to reschedule me same day at another location. After getting
 approval
from some manager they finally agreed to reschedule me just to tell me
 that
all the sites it the Raleigh, Durham area were completely booked. If
this
wasn't the Friday before xmas rescheduling for a later week would be
fine,
but I felt that I had spent so much time preparing that if I went on
vacation and then came back it would be the end of January before I
would
 be
ready to take it again. I went to the prometric website and printed all
 the
addresses and phone numbers for all the testing centers in my area and
called one by one. I got about halfway down the list before finding
 someone
who said they could fit me in. The only catch was I needed to get over
 there
as soon as possible. I jumped in the car and raced over to the new site.
When I got there we got back on the phone with prometric and after 40
minutes of arguing with the new customer service rep finally got the
exam
downloaded. I had just enough time to throw out my bubble gum before
 sitting
down infront of the computer. Obviously due to the NDA I can't talk
about
the exam other than to say it was tough, deserves it's reputation, and
really evaluates whether you have a clear understanding of the
 fundamentals
or not. Anyway, I failed. Score: 67. Am I displeased at the score? Not
at
all. It was my first time taking the test and I feel I gave it a fair
 effort
and I got a fair result. I had bridging and dlsw down pat but was week
on
some other key areas. Do I blame the mess before the exam for my
failure?
Not completely. It is obvious to me that I still have some skill
 sharpening
to do before I consider this exam again. I do wonder, however, if I
hadn't
spent the morning running around in circles and on the phone with people
 and
had gotten a good hour or so to go over my notes and focus on those weak
areas if I might have passed it. Once again, I don't blame Sylvan
 prometric

Not really a Cisco question (directly), but everyone here should have
ample
experience using COM ports to get consoles

Hyperterminal is saying 'Unable to open COM1'. This port on this laptop
has
been working fine for months, and this just started. I've deleted the COM
port in Windows, reloaded BIOS defaults, and let Windows find it again,
but
 it doesn't help.

 Anyone else have/solve this problem?

Re: CCO account

2000-12-20 Thread Charles Henson

After you have authenticated to CCO you get the home page again but your
userid is in the top right corner. While authenticated on CCO you have more
access (based on your "level") to certain things on the site. For example,
if your CCO is registered under your employer who is a var, you have more
access in the pricing pages than someone who is not authenticated. If you
are a Cisco employee (I think they all get level 7 access but I could be
wrong) you have more access to things like cisco white papers and internal
documentation. It's all about what your CCO account is based on.

Can anyone please tell me what is the use of the Cisco CCO account? I
logged in under the CCO account but it looks exactly the same as the
 normal www.cisco.com website.

Re: Current Lab Wait Time

2000-12-20 Thread Charles Henson

They are backed up a little further than that as far as RTP goes. I can't
speak for San Jose. A friend passed his written last week and called
yesterday for his lab and the earliest dates were june1+2. I have another
friend that passed about 2 weeks ago and he's scheduled for may 20ish. I'm
taking mine friday and am planning on scheduling around mid june if I pass.
If you take it in jan you will problably lab around july 1. Once again these
are RTP dates.

I've seen a couple messages from people that have recently passed their
CCIE R/S Written. I'm curious, what is the soonest lab date that you are
able to get? (In San Jose or North Carolina) I'm planning to take the
written the second week of January, do you think I stand a chance of
scheduling a lab date in May or are they backed up farther than that?

Looking for some logic here......

2000-12-20 Thread Charles Henson

Is there any logic or rule of thumb that can be used to remember what is
selected by the lowest value and what is selected by the highes value?
IE.STP root bridge designation is based on the LOWEST mac. OSPF DR is
based on the highest priority. Each one has to do with it's own subject
matter I know but I can't seem to get them all separated and on the written
that could encompass several questions.
(written scheduled for this friday)(confidence is not high)

Re: Passed Cisco MCNS Security Exam !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2000-12-18 Thread Charles Henson

I am a CCNP and a CCDP and I took the security exam about a year ago and
passed it too. I also thought afterwards about pursuing the voice and atm
certs but the bottom line is that once you've gotten your NP and DP, the IE
is the next big step. The "specializations" are nice but once you get your
IE they really don't have alot of weight. I'm coming up on my R S written
this friday. The specializations may help a little but the bottom line is
you have to know everything about every subject. It's enough to drive you
nuts. I'll post my results after the exam.

ps: The only time my "specialization" has been useful is when I started to
consult. The sales reps would throw it around at a client because it gave
them the perception that I was better than the next guy at working on a pix
or something. Humbly, I'm not.

 Hello,

Happy to report I passes MCNS. All in all a fair exam. I used Enhanced IP
Services by Cisco Press, a ton of Info of the Cisco CCO and Boson test #1
which was excellent for preparation for the test. I thought at first I
would move on to CCIE written but am now considering doing ATM and Voice
 over IP specializations first.

Any opinions on which route to go? Advice on good books and other
resources
for any of the above tests?

 Thanks,

 -Eric

I've got the regular IP routing and VOIP CIMs and they were OK. Haven't had

Re: Behavior of Cisco PAT/NAT?

2000-12-11 Thread Charles Henson

There is an argument in the firewall that permits PATting of a NAT pool. The
argument goes at the end of the nat pool statement and is "overload" IE:

ip nat inside source list access-list-number interface interface overload

This allows the firewall to PAT addresses when in runs out of "unique"
addresses in the nat pool.

Charles Henson

""Benjamin Walling"" [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote in message
9131aa$fg1$[EMAIL PROTECTED]">news:9131aa$fg1$[EMAIL PROTECTED]...
If I set up a NAT pool of only 1 address, the router/pix uses PAT. Under
PAT, I can have 65K hosts (or connections from hosts) connecting to the
 internet.

If I set up a NAT pool of more than 1 address, the router/pix uses NAT.
Under NAT, I can have 1 host per address in the NAT pool.

Does this sound right? I have two available address to get my users out
with. If I put them both in a pool, will I only get two out at a time, or
will it allow 65K connections per address in the pool? The documentation
 seems fuzzy on this.
