I'm trying to come up with a solution for centrally manageing and configuring non jet direct printers. Example would be lexmark or canon. I havn't been able to find a product that will let me consolidate their administration on one box. I'm not so much worried about managing print jobs as their network setup and config. I have to ask what you are basing that statement on. I'm not trying to dispute you, just to gain moe information. When you say failover at 2-5 seconds...are you talking about from one Sup mod to another?..or are you talking about convergence in the network? 2-5 seconds makes me think of the sup mods and 90 seconds makes me think of spanning tree. RE: OT - Ethernet Fire Alarm [7:72749]
First thought. A fire breaks out in the Core network area. Perhaps a 6509 bursts into flames. That brings the network down or at the very least makes the spanning tree crap the bed for a good minute and a half. The alarm doesn't go off (at least not in a timely manner) and people die. Re: Starting off towards a CCNP [7:72734]
I'm gonna deviate from the norm on this. I have taken the BSCI and Switching exams in the last month. I think the study material you have would likely be fine for those except you need to add Is-Is to the routing info. I think that you could hunker down and get ready for the switching exam before they change it September 7. once they change it You will have to either get new study material or supplement it more than for the current set of exams. But like I said, I would knock off the Swiitching one first since (my opinion) it is easier. Get it out of the way before it changes. The Routing exam isn't supposed to change all that much. RE: mac address filtering [7:72684]
WELL You can set port security by blade (module) to make it easier, but if you want to be able to move from one port to another that's gonna be tough. I don't know of any 3rd party software that manages that but I wouldn't be surprised if it was out there. An option you might want to explore is setting up a MAC-access list. The question really is how tight you want security to be and what sort of trade off you are willing to accept for the convenience. You can even set up the MAC-access list and associate traffic for a VLAN and what to do with that traffic. But you are getting back to a granular management that might make it easier to just set the security by port again. check out this page on Cisco's site. http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/c3550/1214ea1/3550cr/cli1.htm#23702 Good luck. Passed BCMSN Thanks to all [7:72598]
Once again, the topics covered here and last minute questions answered by group members have paid off. 2 down, 2 to go. Time to start chewing thru BCRAN. I thought the Switching exam was definately easier than the BSCI test. Only had two things throw me. One was a network diagram that I was supposed to mark as an answer to the question and I could swear that the box in the lower right hand corner said more I hadnd't finished answering the question but wanted to know what more there was so I clicked it..and it moved on to the next question. So, I'm sure I got that wrong. The other issue was questions about 3500XL switches. I don't recall seeing anything in any study material saying that they were included in the test. I've worked with them and done some reading on them so I wasn't totally in the dark, but it freaked me out for a minute. Now it's time for BCRAN.guess I'll start tonight. I'm curious to see the new books that come out for this next series of exams. I checked their website and didn't see the new books listed yet. I think you should be fine with either series of books. BSCI Passed. 3 to go. [7:71852]
Much thanks to all for the interesting problems that are posted here. Reading and thinking thru many of these issues helped a lot in preparing for the test. Took the class from global knowledge used the Sybex BSCI 640-901 book An old Exam Cram 640-503 book old BSCN transcender practice test. bought some crappy practice test online. the grammer was awful explanations weren't very good and some of the answers were wrong. tossed it out after first 25-30 quesitons. Asked for my money back...doubt I'll ever hear from them. BGP BGP BGP. I guess it's adaptive?? BGP was my worst thing to study and it showed...even though I spent more time on that than anything else. I thought the route simulations were very small and hard to see (my vision is better than 20/20).The test was well written, but some of the questions were tricky. more than one correct answer one just slightly better. The dry erase marker died in the middle of the test during a router sim when I was trying to figure the mask for distributing a route. they couldn't find another one for me for more than 5 minutes so I was trying to figure it all in my head. it rattled me a little and I had to start the question over. Got that question answered and two questions later another question that required me to do some writing. Thankfully they showed up with another pen. I guess I lost about 10 minutes Heavy on redistribution questions. Know the isis commands well(like the clns commands v.s. the way it's done for the other protocols. And, finally back to BGP Policy based routing. know the attributes. That was a beast when I was studying and it came back to haunt me. you really need to understand the different types and what it means as far as how the traffic will be handled. As for the simulation difficulty. I didn't think it was too hard. Be able to do a basic router config to properly reflect how you will connect several LAN's and also know how to eliminate/reduce routing info from one area to another. It really followed the 640-901 format they laid out. I don't think I've given anything away that they could hold against me so I'd better quit while I'm ahead. Oh... 2 more things. The simulation practice before you take the test. DO IT. The simulation process itself took some getting used to. when I did the practice thing before the test I got stuck in it and would have been freaking out had it been the real test. Lastly. The survey you take before the test. I didn't like that. they are asking you how comfortable you are doing all these tasks that you are about to be tested on. they swear it won't have an effect on the content of your test. Made me nervouse. the things I said I was less confident with.more questions lower score. Maybe it's just because I knew my weaknesses. Best of luck all and again thanks for the help along the way. RE: Cisco Training [7:71811]
I have to disagree with the previous answers. I took the BSCI class November 2002. It was great. Perhaps my experience level was lower but I really learned a lot and the instructor was quite knowledgable and a good teacher to boot. I should have taken the test within a few weeks of coming back from the class but I got side tracked on a project. When I hunkered down last month to prepare the class came back to me. Also this place used the Cisco books but supplemented them with their own labs. I was very pleased. I will agree that the classes are quite expensive, but training is one of the reasons I work where I do. I'm taking another class this month. If it's provided by your employer jump on the chance. RE: Practice tests....Good, Bad, Ethical? [7:71505]
Oh it's certainly not the bulk off my study material. I didn't use any practice tests When I was studying for my CCNA but I needed to test myself a little more for the routing exam. The thing that sticks with me is 2 years ago I had a MCSE who worked for me who got the job based on his certification (I didn't do the hiring). He was the most incompetent person I have ever met. Completely worthless. Because it was a very large project and he was being billed out at a high rate to our clients, my supervisors didn't want to get rid of him. So we hid him away from the clients for the next few months and had him packing boxes and doing other menial work. I remember him once saying that he used the transcender tests to prepare. The brain dump style sites just got me thinking and made me wonder what others thought of it all. Practice tests....Good, Bad, Ethical? [7:71505]
I have been using two practice tests for study. The one that came with the Sybex book, and an older Transcender (bscn) test. The transcender one I think is a good learning tool because the answers go into detail. For the Sybex one, I actually use the flash card test on my palm just for repition of studying. But I am constantly getting emails about other tests that seem less like study tools and more like brain dumps. I thought they were shutting down some of these sites. I know we all want our Certs to cary some weight since we work hard for them so here's my question(s) Do these tests and websites tick you off? Are they valid learning tools? Is there really a big difference between passing this way and the CCNP Bootcamps? Do you not care because the people who pass by memorization will likely make fools of themselves when they actually get a job based on their Certs. Let's face it, the 90's, God blessum, are over and so are the days of $150,000 salaries for CCIE's. I have worked overseas for the past several years on military bases and there is plenty of oppurtunity for experienced people in this little niche if you are willing to do it. The certifications will get you in the door, the USAF requires at least a CCNP for senior infrastructure guys but experience is the biggest factor by far. They will not consider someone with less than a couple of years experience, cert or not. I honestly cannot comment on the job market at home except to say it sounds dismal, if there really are CCIE's out there fighting over $35K jobs than to hell with this whole idea, open a taco stand. Regards, Douglas Mizell CCNP/CCDP You forgot to include something there. To take advantage of that USAF possibility you not only have to be willing to do it, but able to do it. The moment you start talking about a position that requires a Secret clearence I would estimate that you slice 35-40 percent of those who are technically qualified right out of the picture. make it a TS and you probably killed 75+ percent. CCIE's trying to get ccna level jobs? I suppose some are. But I have to say I only have 6 years in the computer arena with just 2 years holding my CCNA. (I'm sitting the BSCI exam next week). I was a contracted employee at my last job and the project ended. The first thing I did was file for unemployment (since I paid for it) and start job hunting. When I was down there filing there was a group of 11 Cisco/nortel people who were there together. They had come from their meeting at ATT where they had just found out that they were losing their jobs. They said there were another 20-30 in their group who were also about to hit the skids. I job hunted for 2 months before being offered an acceptable position. I took a cut but I got a job I love. I was very intimidated when I found out that 30-40 qualified experienced Cisco people were jumping in the job hunt at the same time as I was but I bet I did better than at least half of them and in less time. I just don't believe that you can not find a job if you are experienced and certified. It might not be your dream job. it might not pay as much as you thought you would be making now. And it might require you to relocate. But there are jobs out there. I guess that's why it's a BETA. By the way, How did you do? RE: BSCI 640-901 or 643-801??? [7:70658]
I'll correct myself before anyone else does. In the design portion of the test description, they list IPV6. I also didn't know that RIPv2 was on the test. I took the BSCI v1.2 class last year and have done all my studying based on the topics that were covered in that course. once again, GROUPSTUDY saves my butt. I just printed out the v2.0 test requirements to make sure I brush up on everything. BSCI 640-901 or 643-801??? [7:70658]
I am getting ready to take the BSCI test in the beginning of July. But I don't know what test to take. I have looked at the descriptions and while they are very different, I'm wondering how different the tests actually are. is it a difference of testing method or substance? Any thoughts? suggestions? RE: Virtual MAC and Port Security [7:70030]
I really appreciate your response. I have been trying to make sense of the whole problem and suggested solution. Suppose I have only 2 NICs. one going to each of two switches. They are supposed to be pooling but for some reason I see two MACs that differ only by the last character. But those MACs seems to jump from one port to the other. any ideas as to how I would solve this one? Virtual MAC and Port Security [7:70030]
I have several Servers that are going to be doing NIC pooling. So I'm supposed to see a virtual MAC address instead of the actual physical address of the NIC's. I run the NICs from one server to different switches for fault tolerance. If I have several 6500 series switches how can I set it up for Port Security? I know I can set up the ports to handle several MAC's but if they are running the same virtual MAC what's the answer? RE: Am I over my head guys? [7:69746]
Here's my two cents. I am assuming you interviewed for this position. Probably in person. There are two possibilities. 1) You misrepresented yourself and made them think you have greater skills than you do ( and this would be stupid because if you get a job that you just aren't prepared for you definately will bomb.) 2) You were forthright and they were impressed with the total package of YOU your experience, your communication skills, maturity, ethics, displayed ability to learn and adapt, etc. my guess is it's somewhere in the neighborhood of option #2. If it is, and it really is a good company, they will expect a bit of adjustment.(please them and make it a short adjustment). RE: CCNP Certification [7:65759]
Ms. Oppenheimer, Are the new ccnp exams going to be 642 level exams? I recieved got that email from Cisco but after looking at the list of 642 exams, I just assumed that it was only for tests that I wasn't going to be taking. I thought they had already updated the BSCI test. Am I way off base here? RE: SPAN on a 6006 [7:59373]
sorry to take so long to get back. Took some time off I believe that if you are trying to span more than one port at a time, you have to put those ports in the same VLAN and span the whole VLAN. of course, by this point you probably figured this out already. good luck David Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7i=59720t=59373 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
RE: SPAN on a 6006 [7:59373]
It's just like copying a file copy source destination span source destination the sniffer gets attatched to the second port you specified . Also, your gonna have to make sure you have port security off. if I misunderstood your question, let me know. BSCI class was Awesome [7:57972]
I asked for input on Global Knowledge, a couple weeks ago, and was asked by those who gave it good marks, to share my experience. I got home last night. Took the BSCI class in New York. I am exhausted by the volume of information covered, but I'm really jazzed by the experience. The instructor was fantastic. The class was the best I have ever taken. I have never learned so much in such a short time. Also, I believe the founder/owner of this websight is somehow connected to Global Knowledge, or was at one time. That is based on a conversation at lunch with the BSCI instructor. I wouldn't hesitate to take another class from them, especially if Blair Buchanan is teaching it. Ok, I know I'm really glomming about the whole experience, but I feel very confident about taking the test now. RE: Flash for 6500 SUPII [7:57434]
I'm looking at a box of 20 meg Viking Components linear flash cards. The box they are in has a cisco sticker on it, so I don't know if they are just reselling someone elses product or if our supplier put that sticker on there. These are the ones I use on our 6500 serries switches. I should think you would be ok with after market flash cards. Re: Strange 6509 problems [7:55871]
Ok, this totally doesn't make sense. if you upgrade the os version on one sup mod(obviously it would have to be the one in blade 1, then the one in blade 2 is going to automatically upgrade as well. that's the whole point in having redundent sup mods. Out of curiosity, what sup mod do you have? is it the one with the pfc?, or do you have the msfc cards? have you contacted Cisco about this one? David also, what the heck is tifpc? Putting in 6500 [7:53696]
I am putting in some 6500's this week. Think I have done all the preparation, got all the Vlan's in the config and pruned properly. Just need to trunk it in. What landmines should I be on the lookout for? even obscure issues are a welcome response. The less that can surprise me, the better.
